Black Coffee

She stared into the cup as she swirled the thin black liquid around and around. So dark it was, just like everything else that now existed. The sound of the metal spoon grinding against the metal cup sounded so very like the screams of the tortured souls of both the living and the dead.

She continued stirring, not bothering to add any sugar or milk; she liked the coffee bitter; it fit better then. Bitter black coffee, bitter black life. The Guardian sighed: how strange it was that even the simplest of things could trigger off that kind of thought in her mind.

Still she sat there thinking and stirring the coffee, though she really had no need to do either, and then she blinked as she realised what she had been doing. She raised the cup to her lips and drank, nearly spitting it out as she did; she had been thinking for too long, the coffee had gone cold.
