Disclaimer: I do not own Fruits Basket
Thanks to all who have reviewed so far, sorry for the wait for the next chapter- I was getting over a bit of writers block.
Notes: Final chapter. I’m just finding it too hard to come up with fresh ideas for this fic, so this is the final chapter.
Enjoy!
Shigure was pleased that Akito had recovered so well from inhaling the smoke from the fire. Akito also loved the garden that had been planted for her. She spent hours just sitting in the soft grass there, quietly enjoying the sunlight and the smell of her favorite flowers. Things were slowly starting to recover from the fire. Already, green shoots were starting to sprout in the surrounding area, where fire had wiped out the trees. Birds visited Akitos’ garden, sometimes perching on her fingers when she put out her hand. Since she was blind, she loved hearing birdsongs even more than when she had sight. She loved feeling the birds land on her fingers. The tiny creatures didn’t fear her.
Shigure loved watching Akito when she was sitting in her garden. She looked beautiful, with the sunlight shining on her and the birds gathered around her. He would often stand in the doorway, just watching.
Tohru was delighted that Akito seemed to be doing so much better. Yuki and Kyo were finally starting to get used to having Akito there. Their Goddess was indeed changing. They were slowly starting to not fear her. Thus, their bonds with Akito began to strengthen again. This made the Goddess happier. She felt better, knowing that they were still strongly bonded to her. Still, Shigures’ was still the strongest. He was her lover, after all. It made sense. The bond between Akito and Shigure shone brightest.
Akito smiled as she felt Shigures’ arms come around her. She was sitting on the back porch, getting some fresh air. She leaned back against Shigure. Akito hadn’t felt sick in a while. She wondered if perhaps it was because of being in love with someone, being loved by someone was making her stronger. She hadn’t felt angry or bitter in a long time. Shigure was no longer afraid to hug her too tightly. His Goddess seemed more radiant and stronger than ever. She had even gained back a little weight, so that she was no longer sickly thin. Shigure found that Akito had become more beautiful. She was like a flower that had finally bloomed.
“What are you thinking about?” Akito asked softly. She could tell that he was deep in thought.
“You, of course,” Shigure replied. At this, Akito laughed softly and entwined the fingers of one hand with Shigures’.
"You are silly, Shigure."
That night Shigure watched her sleep.
Shigure loved night especially. He loved watching Akito sleep. She just had this innocent look about her-she wasn’t really innocent-that moonlight seemed to enhance when she was asleep. She almost seemed to glow in the pale moonlight.
Shigure would spend hours just watching her sleep. He never could get enough. Akito was so precious to him, she had complete possession of his heart. His Goddess had him wrapped around her little finger. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her.
Shigure watched as Akito slumbered. She had a tiny smile on her face. He wondered what she was thinking about. Laying down beside her, Shigure watched her for several more minutes before falling asleep.
The Goddess of the Zodiac would go on to marry the Dog and bear a daughter, a perfectly normal little girl. The Goddess surrendered to death five years after her daughters birth. It was a calm and peaceful departure during sleep. The Dog would grieve for many months after, but it would be his daughter, the bright, shining new life who would bring him out of mourning with her childish, simple words.
“Mommy’s always watching, Daddy. She sprouted wings and became the little white bird that sits outside my window every morning.”
