Shannon sat on a log at the fire in front of her and Sayid’s tent alone. She had been hanging out with Claire and Charlie by their tent but they were cooing over Aaron and generally acting like a happy family. She couldn’t take it anymore. Rose and Bernard and Sun and Jin were being all couple-y too as they were so grateful to be reunited. However, Sayid had been at the hatch all day. And the day before. And the day before that.
He had been really attentive for the first 2 days she had been back at the beach but then Jack had pulled him away to take another look at the maps with Ana’s and Eko’s experience with island in mind. He had been reluctant to leave her, but she had insisted that she’d be fine as she had been recovering surprisingly quickly. She was regretting that decision as he had been completely wrapped up with all that ever since.
Staring into the flames, she almost didn’t hear Sayid come up behind her until he said her name. Answering his inquiry about her day, she watched with curiosity as he dug a metal pole into the ground.
“What are you doing?”
“I know that we have not been spending very much time together lately. I have been distracted by the radio, the maps, and the hatch. But luckily, today we had a breakthrough with the radio.” Fiddling with the knobs, Sayid found a signal on the device and Shannon’s eyes widened when she heard the music come out.
“Oh my God! It’s so clear! Someone must be close by!” Sayid shook his head.
“Unfortunately, that is not the case. With short wave radios the signals bounce off the atmosphere and can travel long distances.” Shannon’s face fell as the hope of rescue slipped away once again. “However, it does provide us with a unique opportunity.”
“What do you mean?” she asked. Sayid’s dark eyes sparkled in the fire light as he held his hand out to her.
“Dance with me?” A smile slowly spread across Shannon’s face as she took his hand and he helped her to her feet. His other hand found its way to the small of her back, guiding her body against his and they began to sway to the music. His fingers were warm against the bare skin in the gap between her tank top and her shorts and her body tingled with the closeness of his. As she rested her head on Sayid’s strong shoulder, Shannon recognized the song on the radio, an old Elvis song she could remember her mother listening to.
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
“I do not have much romantic experience,” Sayid murmured in her ear, his breath hot on her neck. “I am only basing this on the few American movies I have seen. I hope it is all right.” Shannon would have laughed if she hadn’t known that Sayid was completely serious.
“Dancing on the beach in the moonlight?” she replied. “I think you are doing a pretty good job.” As the song ended, she kissed him softly and, then taking his hand, led him into the privacy of their tent.
For I can’t help falling in love with you
