Mischief Equals Mayhem
Summary: When Narumi was tasked to look after a senior student, he never realized how tough it would be. Well, until she kissed him.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Gakuen Alice.
Claimer: This fan fiction, Luna Ishihara, and all other OCs, are mine.
EDIT (05.18.09) Luna Ishihara is an original character I made up. She’s different from and has no connection whatsoever to the Luna in the Gakuen Alice manga.
Chapter One
Tasks and Explosives
Narumi opened the door to the faculty room and stepped inside. “Good morning,” he chirped cheerfully.
Misaki looked up from his desk, eyeing his friend disinterestedly. He was the only teacher around. “You have a message from the admin,” he simply said, not bothering to greet Narumi back.
A puzzled look crossed Narumi face. “I do?” He walked to his desk and took a seat, glancing back at Misaki curiously. “What is it?”
“You’re tasked to look after a certain Luna Ishihara.”
“Luna Ishihara?” he repeated. “I don’t think I’ve heard of her before.”
“She arrived here only a couple of weeks ago,” Misaki said. “She’s quite the troublemaker, so the admin keeps an eye on her.” He pulled out a brown envelope from his drawer and handed it to Narumi.
Inside was a candid picture of a young woman who grinned like she had just committed the deadliest sin of mankind. Her gray eyes flashed with mischief, conveying the impression that she knew something most people didn’t, and Narumi couldn’t help but wonder what exactly that something was.
He read her file. “She’s twenty…two?” He raised an eyebrow. He didn’t like to be rude, but wasn’t Luna a bit too old to be studying in the Academy?
Misaki nodded. “Her alice was discovered just a few months ago.” He paused. “You’ll have to be very patient with her, Narumi. She can be difficult. A lot of teachers have given up on her.”
“Give up, huh,” he muttered thoughtfully. “I’m not a high school teacher,” he said. “Why me?”
Misaki shrugged. “They say maybe your alice can tame her.” He glanced at the wall clock. “She’s most probably in the lunchroom now. Why don’t you check on her?”
Narumi placed the envelope on top of his desk. “I’ll go see her then.” He stood up and headed for the door.
۞۞۞
“ – Mikan?”
Mikan turned to Yuu, distracted. “Huh?” She hadn’t been listening to her friend explain about the Alice Festival, which was just several weeks away. “S-sorry.”
She, Yuu, and Hotaru were in the lunchroom, having their early lunch. It was free period – again. Their teacher just had to leave when the class started throwing tomatoes – which came out of nowhere – at him. Most of them didn’t want to have classes, and although Mikan pitied their poor teacher, she could do nothing to help him out. My classmates are monsters, she had thought with a sigh.
“It’s rude not to listen,” Hotaru said, speaking to her for the first time that day.
Mikan was sheepish. “S-Sorry. I was just looking at the student I bumped to a while ago,” she said, glancing apologetically at Yuu. “Something seems wrong, although I don’t know what exactly.”
Hotaru smirked. “Look at you wasting your time on someone you don’t even – ” She paused when she saw the person Mikan was looking at. “Oh.”
The young woman was eating her lunch, looking like she had the time in the world. She had her long, raven hair arranged in a high ponytail, complimenting her light complexion. Her long bangs fell carelessly around her face, highlighting her gray eyes. She was a high school student, as indicated by her brown uniform.
“Do you know her?” Mikan asked, noticing her friend’s pause.
“Luna Ishihara,” Hotaru deadpanned.
“She’s one of those alices discovered by the Academy a bit too late. She’s already finished school, but they insisted that she study here to master her alice.” He glanced at Mikan. “She pulls off pranks most of the time, so they’ve been assigning teachers to watch over her. A lot of them have given up, though.”
“She doesn’t sound very nice.” Mikan frowned. “So what’s her alice?”
Yuu shook his head. “Only the admin knows as of yet. She’s actually still being sorted out.”
۞۞۞
Luna Ishihara tossed back her hair and forked her meat, beginning her countdown. Four hundred fifty…
She almost sighed, curiously eyeing the students who played with their alices even as they ate. She found them interesting to look at; even their most casual shift seemed to underscore the fact that she was in an entirely new environment.
Alice Academy.
She looked outside through the window, thoughtful. The Academy was a great place, with its vast territory and interesting faculty members. Supported but not ran by the government, it could be perfectly described as self-sufficient. It was all very fascinating, and although she had heard of the Academy long before, she never would have imagined it to be what it really was.
The idea of an alice – of being an alice – was almost too incredible, and to discover that she herself was an alice both surprising and exciting. She had been too thrilled to even have time to be sad about going to school again. She just knew that she would be damned if she passed up the chance to master a gift like an alice.
Three hundred eighty-six… she counted, smiling to herself. Let's see how the teachers will handle this one.
۞۞۞
“Mr. Narumi!” Mikan yelled from where she sat, waving at her teacher in delight. He smiled upon seeing her, easily making his way to where she was.
“Hello, Mikan,” he said. “You’ve had your lunch already?” he asked, eyeing their empty plates.
“We didn’t have our class,” Mikan said. “Our classmates began throwing tomatoes at the teacher, so he had no other option but to go out. We decided to just have our early lunch.”
He shook his head, chuckling. “I see.”
“Are you looking for someone?” she asked, noticing how her teacher was looking around.
“Uh-huh,” he replied. “I’m looking for a student I’ve been tasked to keep an eye on. I was told she’s here.”
“Oh. Why do you have to?” she continued, appearing very puzzled.
“I think she needs someone who won’t give up on her,” Narumi said instead, his smile widening when Mikan just eyed him with incomprehension. “Would you like to meet her?” he asked, looking to his right.
Mikan blinked before following his gaze. “Hey, that’s Luna!”
۞۞۞
Luna stood up from her seat, continuing her countdown. One hundred twenty-two…one hundred twenty-one…
“Excuse me,” she heard a voice call out. She looked up, most surprised, only to find out a blond, violet-eyed teacher smiling down at her.
She smiled back before she could realize what she was doing. It was hard not to; something about his smile was both very genuine and charming. Interesting. “Can I help you with anything?”
“I just wanted to meet you,” he said, still smiling, and she couldn’t help but be amazed by his apparent sincerity. “I’m Narumi, homeroom teacher of class B junior branch. I’ve been tasked to keep you out of trouble.”
She arched an eyebrow, amused by the manner he said the words. “I’m Luna Ishihara. I hope you don’t give up that fast.” She noted how the brunette and the blond young man exchanged glances at this. The violet-eyed girl, whom she knew as Hotaru Imai, stared up at her blandly.
“Don’t worry, I don’t,” he said simply.
She leaned down to the students with him. “You’re Mr. Narumi’s students?”
“I’m Mikan Sakura,” the girl said before Narumi even had the chance to utter a word. “They’re my friends, Yuu Tobita and Hotaru Imai,” she added, nodding towards her friends.
She glanced at Narumi before throwing her most innocent look at the girl. “Tell me, Mikan, what do you think of Mr. Narumi?” she asked.
Mikan was evidently confused by the question, but she answered nonetheless. “I think Mr. Narumi is the greatest!” she exclaimed. “He’s very patient and really cares about us. I think we’re lucky to have him as our teacher.”
Narumi put a hand on Mikan’s shoulder. “Come on, now, Mikan,” he said, sounding mildly embarrassed.
“She obviously likes you,” Luna said, chuckling softly. “I’d love to see just how patient you are, Mr. Narumi – ” She paused, remembering something. “Oh, no.”
Four pairs of eyes immediately focused on her. “Something the matter?” Narumi asked.
“I-I…lost track…” she stuttered, turning rather pale now.
“Lost track?” Mikan and Yuu choired. “Of what?”
“I was making a countdown…” Luna swallowed, looking at Narumi uneasily. “Mr. Narumi… I…I set up explosives around the place. I was counting so I’d know when they would explode. I-I lost track of counting…”
“You what?” Mikan yelled. “What about a stopwatch or something? Don’t you have anything to stop them from going off? It could destroy this whole place! All of us – we… we’ll die!”
Luna shook her head, the fright evident in her voice. “I wasn’t going to risk being caught by anyone, so I didn’t think it was necessary. And… and I never thought I’d lose track of counting.”
“Why did you even plant bombs in the first place?” Mikan demanded, sounding panicked now. “They’re dangerous! Are you a pro at it? You should have made sure you could do something during times of emergency!”
“I-I… I guess we’ll just have to wait…until the bombs explode,” Luna said, gazing at Narumi helplessly.
...to be continued...
