THE HAUNTING

By Princess Destiny

Chapter Five

She was drowning, but in such a pleasant way. Sarah could feel every inch of the Goblin King's length pressing her into the bed. His lips burnt over hers, moving with a deep, almost desperate fierceness. Yet, she welcomed it. She could feel nothing else, smell nothing else, but him.

'You can play, Darling. But by my rules and only with me.'

'You belong to me.'

'Does he know who shares your bed, darling?'

You don't own me Jareth...

I will teach you differently...

Tonight...

Sarah's eyes slowly opened, looking at the Goblin King's face so close to her own. A tear ran from her eye as sadness filled her. She loved him so much! But he truly thought her only a possession. And as he had said, he was teaching who she belonged to-and she wouldn't take it.

Sarah thrust her hands against Jareth's shoulders, trying to push him away. Surprisingly he fell back easily, perhaps sensing her resistance.

"No-no more." Sarah tried to twist out of his embrace, eager to be free. When he was so close, she couldn't think, only wanting to be kissed again.

"No more?" Jareth questioned, incredulously. His eyes narrowed dangerously. "Don't defy me, Sarah."

"I-" Sarah struggled valiantly, hands firmly against his shoulders. "Defy you, damn it!"

He looked at her intently, a half-smiled crossing his lips. "Can you, darling? Or are you trying too hard, hmm?"

"I want you-away from me!" Sarah gasped, avoiding his eyes. Her heart sped up as he lowered his head and kissed her neck lightly, darting kisses all over his delicate skin. She froze, lost in sensation for a half-moment, then thrust him away in anger and heart-ache. "Don't do that. Leave me!"

"Never." His tone chilled her, so intense and knowing. He was completely serious.

It's only forever, not long at all…

Did he intend to keep her as his-slave for all eternity. Sarah knew she would not last that long, trying to resist. She thrust at him again, desperately, eyes filling. "Please! Leave me, Jareth."

It was his name, she knew, that gave her his full attention. But, once his eyes had cooled and anger filled the blue depths, she wished she had not said anything. "I am dangerous, Sarah. More than you'll ever know. You would do well never to defy me."

"Because I belong to you?" Sarah cried out, the tears beginning to spill from her dark eyes. "I don't! I can't-" Her voice trailed off.

"You always will though, my sweet." He told her, eyes kindling with a deep inner fire and hunger.

Sarah saw that he would posses her at all costs.

"Do you want to see me broken that much?" She whispered, raising a hand to wipe away her tears. They had dried, leaving her numb.

Jareth made no answer, his face expressionless, yet he seemed to be considering her words. Then, he spoke. "I don't know…" He said honestly, slowly and with thought.

The answer scared her. It told her that the Goblin King perhaps was completely out of control. Who knew what he would do next?

"Why are you haunting me?" She whispered, pale as a sheet. She was physically and mentally exhausted. If he had said that she exhausted him during her hours in the Labyrinth, then she surely knew what it had been like. And now, she finally knew the truth of his actions. Revenge.

Jareth smiled down at her, stroking her cheek lightly with his gloved hand. She would have accepted the action, but for the hunger still burning clearly in his eyes. The, to her shock, Jareth began to sing softly.

My haunting you,
From a certain point of view,
Is obsession or desire,
My touch, goes deeper still.

So pray I keep the thrill,
Fascination with the sight of you,
For a thousand years or more,
The Labyrinth is the door.

Come burn in the fire...

Sarah stared up at him with wide eyes, trying to figure out the meaning behind his words. He lay there, looking deeply into her eyes with a mocking smile. An elegant brow rose in an almost inquiring look at her silence, as if-waiting. But what could Sarah say, really?

"Oh, Sarah," Jareth shook his head, getting off of her slowly, fairly sliding down her body. Then the warmth of him was gone, as he gained his feet and stood, looking at her so-strangely. As if he could see right through her. He smiled, half-mocking and half-sad.

The Goblin King raised a gloved hand to his face slowly and kissed the fingers, then blew it towards her gently, expression wistful. "My only delight." He whispered, then disappeared.

Sarah lay stunned. "What-just happened?" She asked the silent room. One moment, Jareth had been all set to ravish her, then, seemingly at the sight of her tears and her imploration, he had wavered in his determination. And then, there was the words of his short song. Her mind reeled.

The words, obsession, desire, fire and door leapt out at her. She'd sensed so many feelings behind the words he had spoken to her, but moments before. should she try to decipher them?

Sarah slid carefully under the covers, then switched off the light. She knew with a mysterious certainty, that the Goblin King would not return that night. So she could finally sleep, safe for then.

But her eyes were wide and staring into the darkness of the room an hour later. Sleep eluded her for the most baffling of reasons-his last words. "My only delight." She whispered.

With the morning light, came a decision that would change her life. And bereft of sleep, mind in chaos, Sarah had her choice. To leave. There was nothing more that she could do. He was-literally-driving her insane with his passion and obsession. "He's been-haunting me" She said aloud, voice sounding ill-used. No other word seemed to fit. And Sarah had had all the night to think about it. He both baffled and delighted her, excited and scared her, thrilled her and deceived her, obsessed over her and-

"No." She whispered fiercely. "I will no longer crave his touch, to see that glint in his eyes, feel his lips upon mine. I cannot bear it." The last words were said on a sob. He confused her so much!

Sarah got out of bed, dressing swiftly in a deep blue sweater and jeans, too tired to shower or even brush her hair. She had never realised how much one needed sleep to feel vitalised-until then. She walked downstairs, yawning. Karen walked out of the lounge and into the kitchen.

Sarah watched her go, thinking through a dulled mind. Her Father couldn't be the one to help her, he wouldn't have understood-but Karen would.

Sarah reached the base of the stairs and started into the kitchen after her step-Mother. Karen had understood being in love, though never to this extent. The Goblin King was obsessed, and though it was flattering, exciting to a part of Sarah-it was also frightening in it's intensity.

"Good morning, Sarah," Karen said, smiling slightly at her Step-Daughter. "Would you like some breakfast, you are up earlier than usual though." The woman peered at Sarah thoughtfully, taking in the loose tangled hair and the bags under her eyes.

"No," Sarah said quietly, revulsion in her eyes. She wouldn't have kept it down! "No breakfast thank you. I-wanted to talk to you."

"About what?" Karen asked, pouring herself a cup of tea.

Sarah waiting until she had seen Karen add milk and then sugar, mind casting back to the night before. A night's thinking had brought a great deal into the light. She saw it all now. The Goblin King's fascination has turned to desire and possessiveness. Whereas, Sarah had gone from a crush and fascination to...

Love.

But Jareth had not changed. He still saw her, despite all they had gone through, as something to be conquered. And that was why had to leave. She wasn't sure whether to be insulted or glad that Karen had volunteered to help her so readily. Sarah would never know if it was to get rid of her, or compassion on Karen's part because she had once been in love.

"Karen," Sarah began in a hushed voice, conscious of the fact that her Father was just in the next room. She hoped fervently that Jareth wasn't listening either. "I need your help."

"Oh?" Karen murmured, curious. She looked up from her cup of tea, into Sarah's desperate eyes. It was then that she realised just how unbalanced her step-daughter was. The brown of her eyes was desperate, wild and filled with some indefinable emotion, almost resined.

"I need-to leave here. And I wouldn't usually ask you-"

"Because we never get along. I know." Karen murmured, understanding Sarah's hesitation. "What is it, Sarah? Why do you feel you need to leave. It's not me is it?"

"No," Sarah swallowed. She raised a hand to her head, raking a frustrated hand through her long dark hair. "It's-" She moved closer, till their heads were close together. "Him"

Karen looked at her for a long moment. Then she placed her cup carefully back onto the saucer. "Sarah," She began carefully, "You don't have to run away from this-"

"I do." Sarah hissed, helplessness in her tone. "You don't know what he's like. He haunts me at every turn. I can't stop thinking about him and he won't let me have peace!"

"That isn't what love is supposed to be about." Karen said with a frown. "It sounds more like he's harassing you, Sarah. Are you sure he loves y-"

"No!" Sarah shouted. "He loves no one. I am the one who loves in this-relationship." The last word was spat out.

Karen was silent. Clearly, Sarah both loved and hated this man. A man, who evidently, did not love her back. "Oh dear," She sighed.

Sarah watched her face intently, waiting. It was obvious that Karen was torn. Would she help out of-perhaps-some feelings of warmth for Sarah? Or not...Sarah had one more ace, though one she was reluctant to use. She sighed deeply, biting her lip. "There's-something else, Karen. I didn't want to show you."

"What?"

Sarah lifted the hair from her shoulder and out of the way of her neck, turning her head to the side. She heard Karen's breath suck in and knew what she had seen. Twin bite-masks, surrounded by purple bruising. "And this-" Sarah let her hair fall, reaching for the arm of her sweater. She pushed it up, revealing a large bruise just above the elbow.

"My god, Sarah!" Karen said, horrified. "We have to call the police and have this man arrested-"

"No." Sarah said emphatically. She pulled the sleave down, hiding the marks. In truth, as horrific as they seemed-and as colourful-the bruises and bite actually didn't pain her. All her pain was inside. "I don't want the police involved. And I don't want you to tell dad either. I can handle this-"

"Like he handled you, Sarah?" Karen ran a hand through her hair, looking as if she'd like to either strange Jareth-or Sarah! "Why-don't you want to report this guy. You can't possibly love someone who does this to you."

Sarah turned her eyes away. Karen was right, in some respects. She would never let Jareth touch her this way again-and the fact that he had left her when she asked him to...

Begged more-like. Perhaps he hadn't been able to stand the tears in her eyes? Did he love her-somewhere deep inside. Beyond the cold heart that sought revenge? At least now, she knew the truth. And because he felt that way, she couldn't stay where he could reach her and hurt her the more.

No. She'd leave and hope he didn't find her. Though everything in her craved for his touch, the look in his eyes that burned only for her, his presence, his kisses...

"Sarah? Are you listening?" Karen demanded. "What kind of a man does this-"

"He's different. His-methods had reason to them." Sarah's eyes glazed over at the memory of both his passion and cruelty.

'You are cruel, Sarah. We are well matched, you and I.'

It sickened her somewhere inside, that she-enjoyed his treatment. His darkness. Yes. It was his soul she wanted, as well as his heart. They-understood each other very well, Jareth and she.

"Reason?" Karen exploded. "Are you crazy, Sarah?" Karen's eyes went wide and she stared at Sarah uncertainly. "You-don't like that behaviour?"

"What?" Sarah said, startled. Karen had almost seemed to read her mind. She frowned in anger at her step-mother. "Of course not, Karen! I love him." But inside, only she knew she was lying. What was there to do really? If the man she loved was cruel and dark, yet passionate and protective? The good with the bad.

Sarah knew what he was like. She'd known in the Labyrinth, when he'd tried to seduce her. Even then, he was playing a game. His real nature only having touched the surface. She'd seen but a small part of his true self. His darkness.

And it had excited her!

"All right, Sarah. I will help you." Karen held up her hand when Sarah's face broke into a relieved smile. Yet inside, she was crying. "It won't be permanent though Sarah. Your father would never understand why you have to go awa,y" She sighed wearily. "We'll have to think of something. Some reason for you to leave home."

"An-acting School maybe?" Sarah suggested tentatively, aware of how Karen felt about acting.

But Karen seemed approving. She nodded. "Yes, that would be perfect," She reached out, putting her hand over the dark-haired girl's warmly. "You are-despite the fact that I am your second Mother-my daughter, Sarah."

Sarah's eyes filled. "Thank you." She whispered, holding Karen's hand tightly. Then she released it and ran upstairs, leaving the talking to her step-mother. A woman she was just beginning to realise-wasn't as much an evil step-mother as she had thought.

She was almost packed. The car and her dad were waiting outside, engine ready. Everything was in the boot and backseat. All that was left-was to say goodbye to her childhood. She looked around the room slowly, taking in it all, yet feeling numb.

As her eyes swept over her bed, remembering how Jareth had kiss and taunted her, something caught her eye. Something that should not have been there.

She walked over to the bed, eyes widening as she saw a long black velvet case. The sort a jeweller might own. Sarah sat down on the bed beside it, just staring for a long moment. The she reached out with trembling fingers and picked it up. She set it on her lap and opened the lid slowly. Her breath caught as she saw what lay within. A beautiful owl pendant on a long chair, all in silver.

The owl was made in exquisite detail, every feather, the claws, the eyes-and in it's clawed feet was a crystal. The thing was breath-taking.

She looked at it, tears flooding her eyes. She knew who it was from, but why? Sarah blinked away the tears. The pendant was large enough to fit in her palm and she knew it would rest just between her breasts. Even in a gift, he had to constantly remind her that she was his possession.

Sarah lifted the necklace was it's bed of satin slowly, feelings mixed. Just when she thought she had him figured out, he went and did this. Of course, he did not know she was leaving-or did he? "I just don't understand you." She whispered, staring at the intricate details of the owl. One minute, Jareth was possessive-and violently jealous, the next, almost loving. But not.

She sighed deeply, then slipped the chain over her hair. She would accept the gift, no matter what meaning had been behind the gesture-because she loved him.

Sarah took a last look around her room, then left. For now. Who knew when she would return.

He watched her narrowly, remembering the feel of her skin, the warm, the scent of flowers and the night. She was all he wanted. All he could think about. And he wasn't going to let her go. He would have her-one day. One way or another.

"No matter how far you run, my sweet. No matter who you date, who you kiss-you will never forget my touch. Soon, I will come for you." His eyes glinted, in hunger, possessiveness and determination. "I will make you love me. You'll always be mine."

Then he turned and left her to her new life. Sarah, little knowing that it was not over...

Not at all. It was only the beginning. "A new game!" Jareth laughed, voice echoing around the streets outside the School. He summoned a crystal into his palm, looking deep into the clear depths.

With a flash, he was gone, leaving no trace behind for Sarah to find. No sense giving the game away before it has even started...
