Confessions of a Broken Heart
- Lindsay Lohan
I wait for the postman to bring me a letter
I wait for the good Lord to make me feel better
And I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders
A family in crisis that only grows older
Gabriela was at her father's funeral. She was watching them lower the casket into the ground. Tears fled down her eyes. She wished she could have gotten to know him. Now, there was no way she could. She hardly ever spoke to him. Sadly, she had wanted to.
Her father left them when she was just 4, and she hadn't seen him since. He would sometimes send her a birthday card, but that's barely any, since she's only 16, but one is good enough. He was drunk driving and hit a car. The person went into a coma and came out of it last week. Gabriela remembered going to see the man. That was the least she could, especially since it was her father that hurt
him. She had prayed that the man would come out of the coma, and he finally did. That was just two months ago. She had prayed especially hard two weeks ago since they were thinking of taking the man off of life support. Luckily, he woke up soon enough. But her father, he didn't even go into a coma. Police say he died right at then and there.
Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go
Ever since he left, Gabriela had felt lonely. She was constantly depressed when she turned 13. Luckily, she had her mother with her. Gabriela was smart enough, though, not to go into drugs, alcohal, or suicide. She just had this empty, lonely feeling of not having a father with her. No one to give her piggy back rides, no one to dance with at weddings when the Father/Daughter dance came up, no one to try to keep her away from boys, no one to take her to a professional baseball or football game, no one to pick her up and spin her around after she wins a big game for her soccer team, no one to teach how to play sports, no one realize that their little girl is growing up when she gets her period, no one to harrass her boyfriends, no one to set a strict cerfew, no one to tell her that her dress looks beautiful before her date for Winter Formal shows up and after mom sees it because she went to get it with her, and no one to talk to after having a rough day while mom is cleaning up. Some of it may sound weird, but she never got to experience that, and she would give anything in the world to. She wanted to know what it felt like to have a father with you all the time, a father to love her.
Daughter to father, daughter to father
I am broken but I am hoping
Daughter to father, daughter to father
I am crying, a part of me is dying and
These are, these are
The confessions of a broken heart
And I wear all your old clothes, your polo sweater
I dream of another you
The one who would never (never)
Leave me alone to pick up the pieces
A daddy to hold me, that's what I needed
Today was Father's day. Gabriela, as usual, had felt exceptionally sad today, especially since all of her friends had boughten their father's gift and had decided to spend the whole day with them, doing everything that they wanted to do. Gabriela had no one to share this day with. No father for anything. Her own father didn't even show up to her quince, so she danced with her favorite uncle, the one who was like a father to her for all of these years. But it wasn't the same. He had his own children, and she wasn't his daughter. She wanted her father to be there, but he didn't. She didn't know the man her father was. She doesn't know any of his likes, dislikes, favorites, worsts, she didn't know anything about her father. She only knew the father that she had known for 4 years. He was practically gone those years, though. He was either at home drinking, passing out from drinking too much, complaining about everything, arguing with Gabriela's mother, or not at home. He didn't abuse them, but he didn't spend time with them. But he still talked to Gabriela in and sometime talked to her mom in a civilized manner. What Gabriela learned later is that when he was not at home,he was at his mistress's home. After she learned that, about when she was 8 or 9, she couldn't see why they weren't good enough. He practically had a whole new family. With the mistress, he had two children, a boy and a girl, who are twins, and a golden retriever...not their birth born child of course, but an adopted dog. Gabriela met the lady once, and her children, who were born when Gabriela's father had left them. She met the lady the day her father had left her. The lady came to Gabriela's mother drenched in tears, wondering what kind of man he was, and that she was stupid to have married him. She told them that she hadn't had known that he was married, had she, she would have never even spoken to him.
So why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go!
Daughter to father, daughter to father
I don't know you, but I still want to
Daughter to father, daughter to father
Tell me the truth, did you ever love me
Cause these are, these are
The confessions of a broken heart
Flashback:
Gabriela was listening to her father and mother in the family room from the upstairs. She was standing at the top of the stairs. Her knees were up to her chin and she was holding her legs close together. Her chocolate brown hair was falling on her face, sticking to it because of the silent tears rolling down her rosy cheeks. She was staring into space as the noise continued. She had heard large objects fall on the floor and splatter. She heard yelling, mainly her mother. This was their worst fight yet.
"How could you," Gabriela's mother screamed. This caused a curious Gabriela to walk down to the bottom of the winding staircase.
"I just wasn't happy here," her father said back, oddly calm.
"We weren't good enough? Is that what you're trying to say?"
"No, I'm just saying I found something better. Damn, why the hell do you think I get drunk every damn day? So I can have 'fun' " he said with the air quotes.
"I'm not a addict. I just hate it so bad here. There, you happy? You guys just don't fulfill my needs. I need better. Over there, I have a fionce, who, once this divorce is finalized, I am marrying. I am also expecting..." he said, calming down so he can say it as nice as possible. "twins."
"WHAT? How? How could you do this to us? To me? To Gabriela? How?"
"Gabriela? You're going to use that against me. That's it? Gabriela isn't going to change my mind."
"How could you say that about your own daughter?" Gabriela was on the verge of tears, hearing that her father doesn't love her.
"I just don't go with her. She reads to much, and she's going to do fine without me, no matter what happens. She'll go places. But her, she's not good enough to change my mind. Should have picked a better reason."
Gabriela's mom slapped him hard across the face.
"Don't you dare say that about MY daughter. I want you out of here by tomorrow morning."
"I'll get my things now," he said. He walked towards the staircase and Gabriella saw him and ran up the stairs. She ran into her bedroom and started to sob uncontrollably. Her father was leaving her, because she wasn't good enough. She saw him pass her room and ran to him. She grabbed onto his legs, tugging onto his blue jeans. She squeezed his legs and buried her face on his shoes. She was kneeling down, trying her hardest to keep him there so maybe he won't leave. Gabriela, even at the age of 4, knew this was useless, but she kept on trying, not giving up.
"PLEASE! Please don't leave us. I promise I w-won't read anymore. I p-promise, daddy. I'll stop reading and I'll just do other things. I'll be with you all the. Please, just don't leave us. I love you so much. Please daddy, I promise. I won't read anymore.," Gabriela begged, hugging his legs and crying her heart out. Gabriella's father just grabbed her handsand unattached them to his legs. She grabbed around his arms and tried to hug him. He let her go. He pushed her thick, wavy hair behind her ear and kissed her forehead. He wiped away the tears on her cheeks and smiled.
"I want you to keep on reading, no matter what. You got that," he said. Gabriela just nodded back sniffling.
"So does that mean you're not leaving anymore. You're going to stay here with me and mommy," she asked him with her big brown eyes filled with tears.
"I'm not leaving because of you. But I am leaving, I'm sorry. But I love you."
"I love you too daddy."
"May you sleep with the angels, my princess." He used to tell her that every night before she went to bed, when he was drunk or not drunk. She gave him one last hug beforehe just walked into his room, packed his suitcase, and headed out of the door. That was the last she saw of him. And that was the first time he had called her princess.
I love you,
I love you
I love you
I...!
I love you!
Daughter to father, daughter to father
I don't know you, but I still want to
Daughter to father, daughter to father
Tell me the truth...
Did you ever love me?
Did you ever love me?
These are...
The confessions...of a broken heart
Ohhh...yeah
The funeral ended, and everyone gathered into their cars.
"Gabriela, it's time to go," Gabriela's mother said. She had to be with her daughter on thistragic day.
"I know, but could I just have a minute," Gabriela asked politely.
"Of course," her mother said. Before she left, she looked into Gabriela'schocolate eyes, which matched her hair. This time, they looked lifeless, filled with tears.
Gabriela looked at her father's tomb stone. She put down the single red rose she had purchase right in front of his grave. It was a cloudly day, and with everyone wearing black and all, even though they were gone, it stood out. Like Gabriela had.
The tomb stone read: "Loving Father. May he sleep with the angels."She could still hear him whisper it to her.
"I love you. Good-bye Daddy," she said looking up at the sky. A single tear fell down her cheeks as she looked back at
his grave, and a single rain drop fell from the sky. She blew a kiss to his grave and walked towards her mother's car.
I wait for the postman to bring me a letter..
