Author’s Note: I originally started writing this for a House fanfiction challenge on Livejournal. I wanted to try to expand it…and I figured, I already spent time writing it, so why not post it? I don’t usually ship Wilson/Cameron , but that was my assignment on this one, so I hope I do them justice. The first chapter’s kinda short (and a little rough), but they’ll get longer…Feedback—questions/comments/suggestions of any sort are always appreciated and encouraged. Thanks!
Summary: When Cameron and Wilson’s patient (Cindy Kramer from the episode, “Acceptance”) dies, she has an unusual last request that sends the two young doctors far outside the familiar confines of PPTH…and possibly straight into each other’s arms…
Spoilers: “Acceptance” is most likely to be spoiled. I don’t think you really have to worry about other episodes so much, but if anything else should pop up, I’ll give a heads up…
Disclaimers: I can’t imagine anyone, anywhere thinking that I own House in any way whatsoever, but just in case you had doubts—I really, really don’t.
Still there? Yea! On with the story…
“I need to see you in my office right away.”
Not words that Cameron liked to hear from the Dean of Medicine first thing in the morning, but here Cameron sat, on the couch in Cuddy’s office, drumming her fingers on her thigh as she nervously waited for the other woman to arrive.
‘I haven’t screwed anything up…I know I haven’t…’ Cameron thought. ‘That angiogram I did yesterday was textbook…What if…No…Maybe House did something…Maybe she’s digging for information…’ Cameron snorted to herself. ‘Then she’d be asking Chase…He’s the one with the big mouth…’ She let out a sigh. ‘Please, oh please...don’t let me be in trouble…’
The inner office door opened and Cameron turned. Dr. Wilson peeked in. His eyes scanned the room and stopped on Cameron.
“Oh! Cameron! I’m sorry…I didn’t know there was a line…I’ll just come back…” He turned to leave as Cuddy and another rather tall, balding older man in a suit appeared behind him, blocking his path.
“Actually, Dr. Wilson, I asked to see both of you. Please, take a seat,” Cuddy gestured insideand Wilson eyed her and the man warily as he went in and took a seat in one of the large chairs.
“I’m afraid I have some bad news, and I thought it would be best to tell you both together…” Cuddy paused and sucked in a breath. “Cindy Kramer…died…last night.”
Dr. Wilson looked over at Cameron and saw her eyes welling with tears. Cindy had been a clinic patient Cameron had seen five months ago who had presented with a cough...A cough, tragically, that was caused by metastatic squamous cell lung cancer. Cameron had formed an instant bond with Cindy and they had become friends. Wilson had overseen Cindy’s treatments…But…there was never really anything to be done...
Cuddy’s eyes darted from Wilson to Cameron. “That’s not exactly all of it…” Cuddy said slowly. She nodded to the man next to her and he stepped forward.
“I’m Steven Brown, Ms. Kramer’s attorney…” he said slowly. He opened his briefcase and took out a stack of documents. "Before she passed, Ms. Kramer asked for my services in helping her to get her affairs in order...And there are a few things here that I could really use your help with..."
Wilson's brow furrowed. "I'm not sure I follow..."
Mr. Brown handed each of the doctors their own thick packet. "Well, you see, Ms. Kramer has requested that her body be cremated upon her death, and she has requested that her ashes be scattered from a beach in Bermuda at sunset..."
“She told me that was where her parents’ ashes were scattered…” Cameron said softly.
Wilson was flipping through the papers in his hand, "Um...okay...but, I still don't see what that has to do with--"
"As you know, Ms. Kramer was divorced, with no next of kin…” Mr. Brown glanced up at both Wilson and Cameron quickly and continued.“…So…since you were—and I quote—‘such a comfort to her in her final months’—unquote—she has asked that you two be the ones to take her to her final resting place…”
Wilson's eyes went wide with surprise and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes darting between the others in the room.“I…uh…”
“You are, of course, under no legal obligation to fulfill the request…" Mr. Brown assured him.
“And if they don’t?” Cuddy asked, still flipping through her packet.
“If they don’t… then the state of New Jersey gets ownership and will make alternate arrangements…”
Cuddy leaned her back against her desk and crossed her arms. “It’s entirely up to you two…”
“Well, I mean…I don’t…” Wilson stammered and stood up, rubbing the back of his neck. "...We barely knew her..."
"But we did know her...Maybe this is why...We couldn't save her life, but maybe we can help her in death...We can do this one last thing for her..."
"This is just so..." Wilson stopped as his eyes locked with Cameron's sad, yet hopeful, blue ones.
“Please, Dr. Wilson…” Cameron pleaded. “She was all alone…It’s just…the right thing to do…Please.”
Wilson raked his hand through his hair, shaking his head and sighed. He turned to Mr. Brown and Cuddy.
“When do we leave?”
I hope that was okay...Please let me know what you think and whether or not I should continue! Thanks!
