The Ghost Woman And The Hunter
I call you in my arms…embrace is unreal…
chapter two
Danny couldn’t help but cry out in pain as he was thrown hard into the ground, although before he’d been so determined not to show any sign of weakness. Fear ran through his whole being and even as real as it was, he couldn’t help but think…This couldn’t be happening…
A shadow crossed his blurred vision and he swallowed, climbing to his feet as a cold laugh echoed in his ears. He tried taking a step back, but found himself blocked, up against a brick wall. He pleaded for his limbs to cooperate and turn intangible and felt the familiar sensation as he became nothing.
He phased through the wall quick and came out on the other side, collapsing onto the hard ground. Even then the idea that he could hide seemed stupid, but what other choice did he have?
“You can’t expect to run from me,” said the same voice that had carried the laughter before. He was lifted off the ground and then forced up against the same wall he’d just passed through. The brutal strength used to smash him into the bricks nearly knocked the wind from him. “I used to think like you. I’ll know everywhere you’ll go.”
He stared into the all too familiar red eyes of what he could have become. The hand that held him, connected with the silver and black suited, caped figure with flaming silver-white hair, held tight and he couldn’t break free. Not that he dared to.
“Miss me?” he hissed. “Of course, I shouldn’t stray far from your nightmares. Cause I’m your worst one.”
“What do you want?” Danny managed to choke out.
Dan Phantom laughed, a malicious sound that he could have never imagined ever coming from his own mouth. His dark eyes narrowed as they fixed upon him. “Read my mind and tell me. It’s not as hard as you think. So just tell me what you’re thinking.”
He dropped him to the ground and then suddenly flung out his hand, sending a green rope of ectoplasmic energy swarming around him. He couldn’t move, bent on his knees and staring weakly at the ground.
“Two years have I been within that prison that was…what was it called? Oh, that’s right…The Fenton Thermos…Powerful little containment contraption. Powerful enough to hold me for that long…but obviously not strong enough…Otherwise you wouldn’t be here, would you?”
“What do you want, an apology?” Danny snapped, not bothering to hide the sarcasm in his voice.
“An apology…no, of course not,” he said, something glinting in his eyes. “And revenge? That’s far out of my league you see; how many times have your previous enemies said they had wanted revenge.” He laughed. “I took care of them, didn’t I? Made them less than a simple threat back in another future.” Dan leaned down and grabbed him by the shoulders. “A future that you destroyed.”
“Ticked off that I won, are you?” he said angrily.
“You have no idea what I’m feeling right now,” he said. “You’re determined not to think like me, isn’t that right? I suppose it’s the little things that…would easily create your worst fear. If you were incapable of doing anything wrong…then you wouldn’t have to worry about me…How naïve.”
He whirled around. “Two years within that thermos gave me a few good ideas. And I haven’t even started. I’ve got much work to do you see.”
“What are you going to do?” He tried to hide the fear in his voice, but it cracked anyway.
“Tell me why I should reveal it to you. So you can become the hero? Rescue your family and friends before it’s too late? No…I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. Because there’s nothing you can do to stop me.”
Dan leaned down and yanked on the rope, leapt up into the air, dragging Danny helplessly behind. The ground was fairly far away before he stopped and swung him around, digging his fingernails painfully into his shoulders.
“See all this? Your home, your world? Imagine a new world…It’ll be so soon before this whole planet is mine. No one lives…yet no one dies. So, imagine what that means…” He didn’t him the chance to answer. “I’ve got everything I need for a war. No doubt that’s what I’ll get. Innocent humans trying to stop me. And you’re the one to kill them all…What’s worse…is you’ll have no one around to help you.”
“They didn’t do anything to you!” he shouted, trying to break free.
“Look at what they’re doing to you then,” he said. “The part of the city that’s strongest is against you. The part that’s with you is against your human half; and what are you going to do? Expose yourself to win alliances? Then your whole world will be turned upside down and you know it. Your own parents…constantly after you with their weapons? They could easily catch you and take away your whole life. And what would they say then after they learn…it’s just their own son…? Their half-ghost, lying son that supposedly cared so much for them but never told them his darkest secret? How many times have you said you’re sorry Danny? This time…sorry doesn’t cut it.”
He suddenly let go and Danny felt himself fall, faster and faster back down to the ground. But he couldn’t break free and the next thing he felt was the ground breaking painfully on his body. There was a flash of light around him, but he stifled it, refusing to give in.
“You don’t have as many friends as you think Danny. And I’m going to prove that.”
He knew his older self was standing a few feet away, but he couldn’t see him, his vision blurring. Blinking several times, he gasped as a hand grabbed his wrist and pulled him sharply to his feet.
“Because you’re not going to have any after I’m done,” Dan growled. “And what will happen after that? Take a wild guess.”
“I’ll never turn into you,” he said.
“Do you even have a choice? You won’t.”
He swung his hand out and hit him in the chest, sending him flying backwards into the side of a car. He stood up shakily as Dan walked in front of him.
“There’s a lot of things that I can do,” he said. “To make you…like me.”
“So what do you really want then?” he asked, holding his side.
“I’m not here for you, but trust me, if you get in my way, it won’t be like that for long,” he said. “So I’d just suggest you stay back.”
“I’m not going to let you hurt anyone,” Danny said furiously, zooming in front of him fast.
“Here’s a question for you…How are you supposed to stop yourself from hurting the ones you love?” Dan suddenly smiled and shoved him out of his way. “Oh, and look, we have the perfect candidates.”
Danny followed his gaze and saw Damon Gray’s car pull onto the road, a hundred feet away. Valerie was in the passenger seat beside him. “No!”
“Oh, yes, yes!” he said with a maniacal laugh. “You see, I’ve got a special plan for your little ghost hunter. I’ve got plans for everyone you love. And your world…is about to shatter.”
He held out his hand and a green wave shaped like a disk zoomed out from his palm and catapulted in the air, flying faster and faster towards the car before suddenly disappearing.
“Three, two, one…” Dan counted.
“No!” Danny shouted again. Adrenaline rushing through his veins, he suddenly broke free from the rope that bound him and flew as fast as he could, following the invisible wave of destruction. But he was too late.
There was a noise like an explosion had suddenly set off and the car front flipped and then rolled over with a heart stopping crunch back onto its side. He heard a scream and his whole body tensed as the sound of windows breaking and tires whining echoed vividly in his ears.
“No!” he shouted. “Valerie!”
He sped over towards the car, but felt a hand close around his wrist in a tight grip before he was thrown onto the ground hard.
“There’s nothing…you can do this time,” his other half whispered darkly into his ear. He threw his arm around his neck, behind him, but Danny felt almost paralyzed, breathing heavily.
“No…” he muttered hopelessly.
The passenger side door opened before suddenly yanking from its construction and falling to the ground with a loud clang. Danny watched as a hand dangled from the car before Valerie collapsed onto the road.
She had never looked worse. There was a deep cut on the side of her head that was bleeding and she looked pale and fragile, her eyes hardly open.
Dan laughed. “Come to see the show Valerie?”
“Let go of me! Valerie, run!” the shout flew from his mouth as she gasped, quite clearly in pain.
“She can’t. There’s nothing you can do to help her.” He turned back, a gleam in his eyes that sent shivers up Danny’s spine. “Nothing…”
Danny cried out as something sliced into his back and gasping, felt Dan’s deadly sharp fingernails dig into his skin and then wrenched out roughly. The hands that held onto him released him, but Danny knew why as he fell back, exhaustion and pain flooding through him.
“You can’t kill me,” he said, taking in a sharp breath. “You’ll die too.”
“See…that’s where you’re mistaken,” Dan argued. “You sent me out of time. Meaning…to you, I’m invincible. Even if I kill you now, I’ll still live. Because…I still exist.” He just had time to see a flash of green light before electricity swarmed into him, but suddenly he felt no pain.
“Take a good look around Danny. It might be the last time you see this…” He laughed. “Welcome to your new nightmare.”
As hard as he tried to stay awake, darkness swam over his vision. The last thing he heard was his older self’s vicious laughter before silence hit him.
Okidokie, so…that’s only the beginning. Please R&R! Here’s your sneak peek!
Chapter Three:
“Where’s my dad?” she insisted, color flashing in her eyes at the statement. She swayed in the bed, placing a hand over her eyes.
“Miss Gray, please calm down,” he instructed. “He’s in surgery right now.”
“Surgery?” she exclaimed. “Is he okay?”
“He’ll live,” the doctor assured her. “Don’t worry about that. And so will your friend.”
“My, my what? What friend?”
