The Valentines Day's Fiasco

By Cherie Blosoms

Valentine's Day was fast approaching and Hogwarts was in a frenzy, getting decked up in lovey-dovey decorations with mistletoe all over the place.

Harry and Ron surveyed the busy activity taking place in the corridors with disbelief.

"They do this every single year...and people still don't get tired of this?" Ron asked.

"Who does all the work?" Harry asked, looking up to carefully avoid any mistletoe.

"The house-elves I think..."Ron answered, still in awe of his surroundings.

"What!" Hermione flared up at once. "Those poor elves are over worked for this!"

"Um...it’s not like that, Hermione..."

"Elves are people too, Ron! With feelings!"

"Um...actually, elves are elves."

"For crying out loud...!" Hermione yelled, exasperated. She stomped off angrily.

"What did I do?" Ron demanded.

Harry grinned. "The usual."

February came all too soon for Harry. He got up and hurriedly pulled on his robes and walked down to the Common Room finding Ron and Hermione waiting for him.
Ron looked slightly put off but Hermione kept reading her book nonchalantly. Sensing something was wrong, Harry cornered Ron outside the Portrait Hole.

"What's the matter?" he demanded.

"Me and Hermione...”

"...still haven't made up?"

"Um...yeah..."

"Well, give her some time to cool off, mate, she'll come around. She always does," he grinned.

Ron managed a watery smile.

Suddenly, he felt a pair of lips press against his cheek.
He turned around expecting Ginny, but to his surprise and shock, he recognized the owner of a pair of famous radish earrings.

"Luna!"

"You were standing under mistletoe," she replied in her usual dreamy voice.

"Huh!" he jumped aside.

"Good move. You know they're infested with nargles..." she floated away in her dreamy state.

Harry watched her go with her dirty blond hair swishing behind her...and that's where it all began.

--

From that moment on, Harry couldn't concentrate on anything. Whenever Ginny pecked him on the cheek, he swirled around expecting Luna.

Ginny noticed the change in him, but didn't say anything. But the light in her eyes were put out.

Harry began to become a little impatient and short tempered and looked forward to all the classes with the Ravenclaws in hopes of seeing her again. He missed her nonsense facts, the way she laughed and the dreamy air around her. Whenever she turned and smiled at him, his heartbeat grew faster and he became extremely nervous.

Hermione raised her eyebrows inquisitively whenever she caught Harry looking at Luna with the strange look in his eyes.

--

Ginny couldn't stand it any longer. She ran to Hermione and cornered her in the girl's bathroom.

"Ginny! What's wrong?" Hermione had a clue, but she wasn't going to let Ginny know.

"It’s...its Harry! He's...he's..."

"Forgotten to get you a Valentine's Day gift?"

"NO!" she looked up and glared. "He's fallen in love with Luna!" she sobbed.

"What!"

"It’s true; haven't you seen how he looks at her? He doesn't love me anymore. That sneaky little witch..." she growled.

"I'm sure there's a better explanation for all of this," Hermione soothed her. "Now, wash up and go to class. I'll handle this," she smiled.

--

February the 14th has arrived.

The hall was filled with people of various houses blushing as they handed over their gifts and roses.

Harry walked in nervously.
Was she already here? Oh god...he knew he should've set an alarm for 5:00 AM so that he would have had enough time to get ready.

Ron took one look at him and burst out laughing, spewing the people near him with soup.

"What happened to you?" he roared with laughter. "Don't tell me you did all this for Ginny!"

Harry turned crimson with embarrassment. He had been up all morning trying to get his hair to look good and stop it from being messy.
In the end, he had succeeded, but only after borrowing a vat of gel from Hagrid.
He looked stiffly towards the Ravenclaw table. Luna was already there. She was a wearing a pair of heart-shaped fluorescent pink earrings and had a huge multicolored clip pinning up her hair.

"Um...Luna..." Harry walked up to her.

"Yes, Harry?" Luna replied in her usual dreamy voice.

"I...er...need to..."

"I have to go now," Luna cut in. "I have Herbology. But what about after lunch in the Library?" she smiled.

He felt his heart skip a beat.

"Sure."

"Thanks. See you then," she stood up and walked off.

--

Lunch wouldn't come fast enough for Harry.
He forced some food in and ran back to his dorm to make sure that he didn't look like an idiot. He ran to the Library and looked around.

And then, he heard her laugh.

He felt a little bit of heat on his cheeks as he followed the sound of her voice. He found her talking to somebody who was standing a little bit away.

Suddenly, she noticed his presence.

"Harry, nice timing," she smiled.

"Um...I just wanted to say that..."

"YOU!"

Harry looked up, startled and shocked to find the last person he would've expected.

"Malfoy!" he spat. "What are you doing here?" he demanded.

"I could ask you the same thing," he shot back, angrily.

"Oh, Draco!" Luna exclaimed suddenly. "This is soo pretty! Thank you," she smiled serenely, holding up a necklace made of butterbeer-corks carved into the shape of hearts.

"No! Here's mine!" Harry thrust his parcel into her hands before glaring at Malfoy.

Luna opened it carefully and found a slender gold chain with a small heart-shaped pendant.

"It’s so beautiful! Thank you, Harry!" she smiled.

"Of all the...!"

Hermione walked out from behind the shelves, her eyes wide open in shock.

"Harry! What're you doing!"

Harry ignored her.

"Luna, will you be my date for the Valentines Ball this Saturday?" Harry and Draco spoke up.

They stopped to shoot each other a look of pure loathing.

Luna looked at the two tentatively.

"Um...there's only one to settle this..!"

--

"Alright...and what are we supposed to do again?" Harry asked, looking at the jelly beans in his hand hesitantly.

"The point of this contest is to make as much pretty jewellry as possible within the hour. The one who makes the most will be my date." said Luna, dreamily.

"JEWELLERY?" Draco demanded. "I do not make jewelry!"

"Ready...set...go!"

Harry looked at the needle and the thread in his hand and smirked. Sewing all that stuff for Aunt Petunia was worth it after all! He quickly started threading the beans together.

Luna watched on quietly.

Draco simply stared at the beans and finally decided that he would be safest copying Harry.

They went on and on and landed up throwing Jelly beans at each other.

One landed on Luna who looked up from her copy of the Quibbler.

"Times up," she chirped and started inspection.

"Well...um...I like yours, Draco...and...um...Harry's is nice too..." she stared at their work.

Harry was nervous...what if she wouldn't like it?

"Luna, I love you!" he blurted. He couldn't control himself.

Ginny, who had walked in, looked shocked.

"HARRY POTTER!" she screamed and pulled out her wand.

A few minutes later, she left in a huff after performing her famous bat-bogey hex.

Harry couldn't move a muscle. And he felt horrible...

--

Wait...was that Ron's voice?

"Harry! Mate, wake up!"

"Heh?" Harry replied sleepily.

Ron grinned.

"Time to rise and shine!"

"Heh?" Harry replied. He couldn't understand what was going on. He managed to pull his robes on and walked out hurriedly with Ron.

Harry and Ron surveyed the busy activity taking place in the corridors with disbelief.

"Um...actually, elves are elves."

"For crying out loud...!" Hermione yelled, exasperated. She stomped off angrily.

"What did I do?" Ron demanded.

"Waitaminute..." Harry said, suspiciously. This sounded oddly familiar.

And suddenly, he felt a pair of lips press against his cheek. He turned around quickly and found Luna.

"Luna!"

"You were standing under mistletoe," she replied in her usual dreamy voice.

"What the...!"

Suddenly, it all came back to him.

He took one look at her dirty blond hair and took to his heels.

"NNOOOOOOOOOOOOO...!"
