4 months After Third Impact: Commander Ikari’s Office.

Shinji tried to glare at his Father, he really did, but there was something about his reflective glasses, the way he covered his mouth with his white gloved hands that forced him to wilt beneath his impassive gaze. Behind him, the technicians installing the new windows busied themselves, trying not to pay attention to what was going on.

“Father.” Shinji said, unsure of what else he could say.

“Pilot Ikari.” the old man answered coldly.

A freezing silence followed, both Ikari’s breath appearing to condense in the air, Shinji’s hand clasping and releasing.

“Have you found her?” Shinji asked again, breaking eye contact for a moment.

“No.” The elder Ikari answered. “You must accept your loss Pilot.” he paused for a moment “She cannot return.”.

Shinji didn’t notice the slight strain in the Commanders voice as he tried to maintain his façade. He just looked at his feet, sorrow tears welling in his eyes again, anger gripping his hand into a fist. He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it wordlessly for a moment.

“Like….” he stuttered. “Like you accepted mother’s!” he yelled back, visibly stunning Gendo for a moment.

He growled lowly, glaring at his son over the rims of his glasses.

“You will not speak of this.” he directed.

“Like hell I won’t!” he snapped back like a berserker Unit 01. “No wonder she rejected you. No wonder she turned you away. After all you’ve done, I’m surprised she doesn’t hate you!”

The Commander dropped his hands under the desk, momentarily shaken.

“I hate you Father!” Shinji screamed. “I hate you, you know that?”

“You have that right.” The Commander regained his composure, returning to his trademarked pose for a short moment, before slowly removing his sunglasses to reveal the grey blue eyes he shared with his son.

Shinji stopped dead in his tracks, unable to say anymore.

“But remember.” The elder Ikari continued. “If you hate someone, then you must take the consequences.”

Shinji just nodded.

“Then I trust this will be the last time we meet.” Gendo said coolly.

“That’s my intention anyway.” he confirmed his choice, turning his back on the old man.

“Goodbye, Shinji.”

As the double doors closed behind him, Shinji found himself shaking uncontrollably, whether from fear, sorrow or anger he couldn’t tell. Part of him wanted to cry on the floor, part of him wanted to turn around and scream hatred at the doors. In the end, he just walked home on shaky legs, making a journey he hoped never to repeat again.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Resurrection
A traditional WAFFY P3I fanfiction.

I don’t own Evangelion, someone else does.
A lot of stuff might be mentioned that’s copyrighted.
I don’t own it either.
It’s just a bit of fun anyway.

Suzahara Apartment.

“Toji!” the boys Uncle called him to the kitchen of his apartment, his sister Takako looking up from her manga.

“There a letter here for you.”

“Alright.” the teenager groaned, pushing himself onto his one remaining leg, before resting his crutches under his arms. Annoyingly, his prosthetic leg was still charging in his bedroom.

“It’s from the government.” his Uncle said as he lowered himself onto a chair in the kitchen. “I think anyway.”

Toji sighed slightly and nodded.

“It’s probably my recall notice.” he thought out loud. “All the former Pilot’s have gotten one.”

Wordlessly he tore open the envelope and began to read the letter inside. He looked up at his Uncle, stunned for a moment before handing him the letter.

He hadn’t expected that, to say the least.

Aida residence

Kensuke’s hands tapped across the keyboard of his laptop as he put the finishing touches on the description and technical details of the new Unit 04. Red eyed, he caught himself from falling asleep on the black keyboard before he hit ‘enter’

The page went blank for a second, before refreshing onto the new data.

He smiled as he read his accomplishments, having hacked his father’s database and downloaded the files overnight, even adding a few spy images of the new mecha.

Sitting back on his chair, he gave a slight prideful smile.

And then the page went a blank white again.

Instantly panicking, He jumped forward over his keyboard, frantically searching for the error in his coding that had caused this.

He felt sick as a new image appeared on the screen in front of him.

The red fig leaf crest of NERV with a new motto written beneath it.

“Have nice day.”

The fair haired otaku slumped over his keyboard, defeated. “I thought I had it perfect this time, with no back doors or holes or anything.”

“Kensuke, are you ready for school yet?” his father called up to him.

He shot upright, checking around his darkened room, not realising how late, or early it had gotten. The clock on his computer said 7:35.

“Shit.” he groaned.

The Office of Commander Ikari

“Good morning Doctor.” the Commander greeted the bottle blonde with, what for him anyway, constituted an amicable warmth.

“Good Morning.” she responded.

“Your report Doctor.” Gendo cut straight to chase.

Professionally, she sat down on the opposite side of his desk, placing a series of files on his desk. A moment of disgust as she remembered the last time she’d sat on his side.

“Firstly.” she began. “The Fourth Child has been informed that he has been placed on reserve list.”

“I see. Has a replacement been found?” the Commander asked coolly.

Another one? It’s not as if they’re machines.” She thought, glaring momentarily at the old man, before returning to her report.

“I have prepared a profile of two potential candidates for the Seventh Child from class 2-A.” the doctor handed a grey folder to Gendo. “The boy may be a security risk, but we can control him better if we have him under our direct command and he has, surprisingly, the highest predicted sync ratio of any current candidate. He is proficient with computers, and he will at least be a willing volunteer.

The girl is good with authority and organisation, and she was originally slated to be the Pilot of the first Unit 04, before its destruction, but her predicted ratio is much lower. She does have a connection to the Fourth Child, which should help with her synchronisation, but her willingness to Pilot is unknown.”

“We will use the girl.” Ikari directed after a moments consideration. “She will be informed today, if possible.”

“Understood.” Ritsuko nodded.

“On another matter.” she continued. “There is the question of what we should do with the recovered remains of the MP EVA’s. One of the Evangelions was recovered relatively intact.”

“Go on.” Gendo showed his interest with a raised eyebrow.

“It should be possible to repair it, and convert it to Pilot operation with a new core. “ she handed him the second folder, with a slight, prideful smile.

Opening it, glancing momentarily at the detailed research predictions inside, he had to admit to himself he was impressed by her work. Yui would’ve found it interesting reading.

Any new EVA would be a welcome addition, especially since he still had no idea what the old men were capable of.

“Good work Doctor.” he nodded. “You may use whatever resources you see fit to complete this project.”

A little surprised by Gendo’s sudden compliance, the doctor was only able to nod and offer a quick ‘Thank You’ before leaving to prepare a new file for the Seventh Child.

Katsuragi Apartment

Rei had never cooked anything before, at least not a proper meal anyway. Her only experience was with instant garlic ramen. Yet she felt quite satisfied with herself, having followed the directions on the packaging exactly correctly.

Both temperature and timing.

But still, there was something strange about the sausages she had cooked. At the very least, they weren’t the same golden shade of brown as the ones on the box. In fact, they were almost black on the outside.

Asuka had requested sausages, and the pilot of Unit 04 had decided it would be best if she kept the redhead on what appeared to be friendly terms, so she agreed, despite her misgivings about cooking meat. Asuka frowned as Rei wordlessly slid the plate in front of her, thinking that perhaps asking Rei to cook might’ve been a bad idea. But still she took a bite.

In an instant, she wished she hadn’t.

“Gah!” she spat it back out, Pen-Pen catching it in mid air. “Are you trying to kill me?” she snapped.

“What?” Rei didn’t understand.

“Look.” Asuka held up the cut sausage. “It’s still raw on the inside!” she showed Rei the pink meat, and a small drop of what looked like red blood.

Rei cringed, disgusted by the sight.

“Pork can be deadly if not cooked properly.” Asuka continued.

“I followed the directions correctly.” Rei told her.

“Asuka, it’s her first time cooking.” Shinji made excuses for her.

Asuka opened her mouth for a moment, as if to snap him down, before looking at the brunette standing wearing her school uniform and a green apron.

“Well, The directions are written by idiots.” she huffed. “They have no respect for the sanctity of a proper wurst. They have to be cooked slowly over a lower heat.”

Rei took a few moments to think, which Asuka interpreted as a complete lack of comprehension.

“Look First Child,” she continued. “I don’t want to be poisoned again, and there’s no way I’m filling in for you’re cooking chores, so, I’ll show you the proper way to cook a German sausage.”

Shinji watched, struggling to choose between laughter or concern for his would be sister as Asuka practically dragged Rei to the cooker, opening a fresh box of sausages she’d imported. He hadn’t even gotten the chance to offer to take up Rei’s cooking chores. He was glad he hadn’t gotten the chance to eat her sausages, that it was lucky Asuka had tried them first.

He knew he probably would’ve swallowed to save Rei’s feelings, and let himself get poisoned.

“Now.” Asuka began her explanation, Rei watching with her usual focus. “You need to use a lower heat, so the sausages cook fully through, long before the skin gets close to burning.”

Rei found herself wondering why Asuka was being so nice to her, since she’d returned anyway. Was she making an attempt at friendship, or were supposed friendly gestures like this just ways for Asuka to enforce her sense of self superiority over her? At least it was more pleasant than the alternative.

“See.” Asuka directed her attention to the sizzling pork meat. “It’s just beginning to brown now, but it’s properly cooked inside.”

Rei felt sick as the smell of the cooking meat reached her nose.

“Now try some.” Asuka directed, offering a streaming hot piece of golden brown sausage, “And taste the difference.”

Rei’s mouth opened slightly, before a wave of disgusted nausea overcame her. She was caught between refusing, and possibly offending Asuka, or eating something disgusting that might make her sick.

“I dislike eating meat.” she said simply.

“What?” Asuka towered over her. “How could you refuse a properly cooked work of art such as this.”

“I do not want to eat the ground remains of a pig, wrapped within it’s own chemically washed intestines.”

The redhead glanced at the piece of industrial sausage for a moment. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t known what a sausage was, but to hear it described like that tied her stomach in knots.

“Have it your way!” Asuka huffed angrily. “Only you could make a sausage sound disgusting anyway.” she pushed Rei down as best she could. The brunette just stood there, apparently unaffected, waiting for her to finish.

This time, it was the response she’d expected.

The redhead snorted, before dropping heavily onto her wooden seat, Shinji flinching beside her, expecting something more, but she just quietly returned eating the sausages she had cooked for herself.

Rei regarded her German comrade for a moment.

“Does this mean you no longer wish to offer your friendship?”

Surprised for a moment, Asuka’s response caught in her throat.

“What…What gives you that idea?” she gave a prideful toss of her hair, trying to hide her indecision and confusion.

“You are angry with me.”

“I meant….” the Bavarian looked at Shinji, who was as surprised as she was at the Rei’s question. “Gah, forget it.” she dismissed the conversation with a wave of her hand.

I don’t know if she was weirder before, or after Third Impact. ‘ Asuka mused to herself. ‘And what gave her that idea in the first place.?’

Puzzled, still unsure what Asuka thought of her, of whether she hated her, or considered her a friend now, Rei studied the red haired pilot for a few short seconds, before returning to her own breakfast of buttered toast.

Shinji was simple in that respect. She knew he cared for her. Misato too was relatively uncomplicated, treating her as a colleague and subordinate while on duty, and a friend while off.

Asuka was quite the different challenge. She could never predict what how she would react, or how she would treat her from one moment to the next. Did Asuka want to consider her a friend now, or was she just being nice for some advantageous reason?

“Morning guys.” Misato announced her arrival, before heading straight for her fridge.

“Morning Misato.” Asuka spoke to her sausage.

“Morning Misato!” Shinji said brightly.

“Good Morning.” Rei said politely.

“YEEEEEEEEE-HAAAA!” Misato’s traditional beer yell went unnoticed by the residents of the Katsuragi apartment, who were long used to it.

.”Good stuff.” she burped, opening her second can. “What’s for breakfast…Rei?” she asked, stopping mid sentence to check the chore chart.

“Sausages.” she answered simply.

“No wait, Don’t eat…!” Asuka began a warning as Misato picked up one of Rei’s efforts.

She paled as the half dressed Colonel swallowed the armadillo cooked sausage whole.

“Nice.” Misato smiled. “Maybe I should let you cook more often Rei.”

The brunette nodded.

“Ack.” Asuka sweatdropped noticeably, before cringing as Misato ate another.

“Well.” she snorted, regaining herself. “You consider cold ramen and lumpy instant curry a good mix.”

Misato just smiled, feeding what was left to Pen-Pen.

“Asuka, you’re going to school today, aren’t you?” she asked.

“Yeah.” the redhead nodded.

“Well you better get ready, it’s getting late.” Misato said.

“Don’t worry, I’ve plenty of time to get dressed.”

Schnell, Schnell.” The Colonel remembered her German, beyond ‘Can I have another beer please?’.

“Alright.” the Bavarian rolled her eyes, irritated that her native language had been used against her, before slowly making her way to the bathroom.

N.S. Arktika. 400 miles west of Hawaii.

“Sergei, get those guide rails welded on fast!” the blonde haired boys father yelled up in Russian accented English, into the crawlway above reactor two.

“I’m doing it!” he snapped back, his voice resonating off the confined space.

“Like I was doing it five minutes ago the last time you told me.” he growled under his breath. “And five minutes before that.”

“Well hurry up.” the Russian man shouted back.

“And remember boy, you still have your Japanese lessons later tonight.” he added. “If you want to go to school during refuelling at Tokai you will learn the language.”

“Yeah Pops.” the teenager groaned.

Sweating, wearing a heavy orange boiler suit and welding mask, he shifted position in the dark access passage, trying to find some way to make himself less uncomfortable.

He took a moment to adjust the electric lamp he was working by, before checking his radiation dosimeter. Behind the bulkhead in front of him was a part of the primary cooling circuit for reactor two.

“Why do I always get the shit jobs?” he asked nobody, as he lowered his welding mask with a flick of his head

A crack of electricity and the passage was lit by a burning violet blue light, and a shower of golden flickering sparks.

Tokyo-3 High School.

Kensuke slept lightly on his desk, his laptop open with three lines of HTML code written on it, and a few photographs from his personal files. Toji had his feet up on the desk beside him.

“Y’know, you’ll beat him eventually.” he said to the military Otaku, not knowing he was sleeping.

“Uh.” Kensuke groaned, waking up. “Oh, Melchior?” he guessed what Toji meant. “It’s like he’s not human or something, the speed he works at. Using the name of one of the three wise men as his handle and everything.”

“He’s like a hacking God.” the green eyed boy sighed.

“I don’t know much about computers myself.” Toji admitted. “But if you can get into his database, why can’t you keep him out of yours.”

“I know my father’s passwords, that’s all.” he answered, stifling a yawn. “He never changes them.”

Toji looked at his leg, and the green segmented charge indicator on the plastic calf.

“I got a letter today, from NERV.” he said, his tone changing.

“You’ve been recalled?” Kensuke asked, jumping to conclusions.

“No.” The tracksuited jock shook his head. “They told me they were putting me on reserve.”

Toji watched his friend eyes light up for a moment, before he looked out the window, then at his laptop.

“Does that mean there’ll be a new Pilot?” he asked, unintentionally forceful.

“Yeah, probably.” Toji told him, “But don’t get your hopes up.”

The fair haired Pilot was about to yelp with excitement, but he saw the expression on Toji’s face as he stared at his prosthetic leg.

“I wouldn’t wish that machine on my worst enemy.” he said softly.

Stuck for words, Kensuke returned to his laptop, trying to find a way to recover his lost webpage at least.

Guten Morgen Hikari.” A German accented voice said as it’s owner entered the class.

“It can’t be.” the two stooges said simultaneously, paling as they searched for the source, hoping it wasn’t what they thought it was. Panicked, they watched as the newly returned redhead strode confidently into class, followed by Shinji.

“Welcome back Asuka.” Hikari greeted her friend with a smile.

“It’s the demon!” Kensuke cried as Shinji quietly slipped into his seat, hoping he wouldn’t be noticed.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” his fellow stooges demanded, towering over him. Shinji just shrunk back down into his seat and responded only with a nervous grin.

“Well, if it isn’t the three stooges.” the German grinned at them in a pseudo friendly manner that just made them nervous. “Kensuke Aida.” she glared at the military fanboy. “If you sell pictures of me again I will make sure you live to regret it.” she warned in a deadly serious voice that left Kensuke in no doubt of the consequences.

“Well don’t worry about that.” Toji said, with a mocking reassurance. “Nobody would pay for pictures of a devil like you anyway.”

“What!” the redhead shrieked, threatening to smash Toji over the head with a book in the traditional manner.

Instead, she’d been interrupted by a soft laughter form the brown haired boy beside him.

“And what are you laughing at Third Child?” she put her hands on her hips, taking him to task over it.

“Nothing.” he smiled at her. “It’s just nice to be normal.”

The Bavarian rolled her eyes at what seemed to her like another idiot Shinji excuse.

“Rise Bow Sit.” The Class Representatives daily order preventing any possible comeback on her part as Miss Tanaka arrived in the class.

Rei paid no attention to the mathematics being discussed on the blackboard, instead watching out over the city and the mountains. For some unknown reason she found herself compelled to watch out over the mountains, towards the coast.

What am I watching for?’ she asked herself.

It was a feeling that something, she didn’t know what, was coming over that mountain.

Instantly, a screech of tyres and the roar of an engine drew her attention to the car park below, as an old black Toyota sports car skidded into a parking space beside some even older white Mazda, and strangely, a black NERV Honda Accord.

“I’m so late!” the black haired driver jumped out, grabbing her classroom satchel and running for the door.

“...And so feeling they had no other options, the order was given to prepare the attack.” Miss Tanaka continued, pulling Rei’s attention back to the classroom.

Kensuke was switching between stolen moments asleep and frantic recoding of his website. Shinji was dutifully taking notes while Asuka and Hikari traded messages over the laptop network.

Hikari Horaki of Class 3-A” The school’s P.A. announced. “Hikari Horaki of Class 3-A please come to the principals office.”

“What’s that about?” Asuka whispered to her friend.

“I don’t know.” the Class Rep answered.

Toji immediately jumped upright, a disturbing possibility crossing his mind as he watched Hikari leave the class

It can’t be.’ he told himself. ‘Not that’ he shook it off

The Class Representative tried to work out what, if anything she could’ve done to deserve this. Maybe they’d made a mistake or something, or she might’ve forgotten something on the classroom attendance.

“Hikari Horaki.” she said her name, knocking on the door.

“Come in.” a woman’s voce answered.

Nervously, like any teenager expecting a punishment, she slid the door open. She was surprised almost to find that the principal wasn’t in the office at all, just a blonde woman wearing a white lab coat.

“Hikari Horaki?” she enquired.

The brunette nodded.

“Please sit down.”

Hikari took the seat opposite the woman, whom she guessed was some sort of scientist.

“I am Dr. Ritsuko Akagi.” the woman introduced herself. “I work for NERV. I assume you know what NERV does right”

“It fights the Angels with the EVA robots.” Hikari answered nervously.

“Correct.” the doctor nodded. “And you know that these robots need to be Piloted by children the same age as you.”

Hikari paled, feeling almost sick as she realised exactly where this Doctor was going. She found she could only think of Toji and what had happened to him. And how would he react when she told him?

“I do.” she stuttered.

“We have performed tests that suggest you should be capable of Piloting an EVA.” Ritsuko kept it professional. “That makes you the Seventh Child.”

“I…um….” Hikari looked around, at her feet, unsure what to say, or do. “Has my father been told?”

Ritsuko checked her clipboard.

“He will be,” she responded. “But only if you accept.”

“So I can refuse.”

“Well,” the doctor looked down at her clipboard for a moment. “It is best if you volunteer.” she answered.

Hikari controlled her breathing, trying to calm down, trying to take in what she’d been told.

“Which one…em…Which Evangelion?”

“You’ve been selected to Pilot Unit 03.” Ritsuko told her.

“But, that’s Toji’s, isn’t it?” she stuttered.

That’s the one that went crazy and nearly killed him.’ she added mentally.

“It is, but some of the core systems had to be changed and….”

Dr. Akagi was interrupted by the sudden, wailing cry of the siren outside the school.

“Not now.” Dr. Akagi stood up, the pager in her pocket beeping.

“Is it an Angel?” the by now terrified lass representative asked.

“Probably.” the Doctor answered abruptly. “Stay here and go to the shelter like you normally do.” she directed. “Unit 03 isn’t ready for you yet. We will contact you when it is.”

Relieved, Hikari just nodded, before running to marshal her class to the shelter.

Ritsuko gathered her things, stepping out into the corridor. Of all the times for an alert to be sounded it had to be while she was away from headquarters. Already the corridor was full of chattering classes, making their way to the shelters discussing the possibility of whether this was another drill, or something else.

“Dr. Akagi.” a surprised voice spoke beside her.

“Oh, Hello Shinji, Asuka, Rei.” she acknowledged the three Pilots. “I’ve a car waiting outside to take us to headquarters.” she hoped that would hide her true reason for being at the school.

Shinji just looked relieved, that he wouldn’t have to make a long run down to the Geofront, while Asuka looked suspicious.

I…I

Silently, Hikari stared at her feet as she sat on a mat in the shelter, occasionally glancing at Toji beside her. She wanted to tell him the truth abut what just happened, about why she’d been taken to the principals office, but every time she opened her mouth, the words wouldn’t come out. She wasn’t sure how he’d react, or what he’d do.

The last thing she wanted him to remember was what happened.

Sometimes, she saw him stare off into middle distance, or fidget with his prosthetic leg when he thought there was nobody looking.

And now she was going to be Piloting the same machine.

“Don’t worry about it.” Toji dropped onto the mat beside her, with a cheerful smile. “I’m sure we’ll be out of here quickly enough.”

He’s noticed something’s wrong.’ Hikari realised, ‘He’s trying to comfort me.’ she felt almost warm. ‘But if he finds out before I tell him, or if somebody else tells him?’ she thought, momentarily panicked.

“It’s okay.” she forced a smile. “Just some unexpected things, that’s all.”

“Ah.” Toji sighed, resting back against the pale green concrete wall. “They’re always the worst.”

I…I

From CC-M: “The target is advancing over the western mountains.” the Colonel told the three Pilot’s. “We expect Contact in approximately ten minutes.”

From CC-A: “AT field pattern Blue confirmed.” Aoba reported.

From CC-I: “Very well. Designate the target as the Nineteenth Angel.” Commander Ikari ordered from the command deck.

So this is what the old men have been planning.’ he thought, almost nervously.

“That doesn’t look like an Angel.” Captain Connolly commented on the Operations deck below. “It looks more like an…”

“We know.” Misato cut him off tersely. “But, the Angels have shown numerous different designs and capabilities. This is just another version. ” She sounded like she didn’t truly believe that.

If she was honest with herself she couldn’t explain why it looked like it did either. For an Angel to look like that by accident was almost unthinkable. But there it was, giving off a perfect pattern blue.

Every signal NERV was receiving said it was an Angel.

Misato stared at the biped as it strolled forward, cresting the mountains that ringed Tokyo-3.

In her cockpit, Asuka watched on her displays as it rose over the mountains.

From Unit 02: “Mein Got in Himmel” she whispered. “That can’t be.”

Aboard Unit 04, Rei scowled as her targeting systems immediately locked onto it.

Sitting in Unit 01, still in it’s cage, the image of the 19th Angel in front of him silhouetted by the sun behind it brought forward uncomfortable memories of the Thirteenth.

Humanoid, with two legs, and two arms and a head. At first glance, it looked almost like an EVA with its shining white armour. But on closer inspection he could see that the proportions were way off. It was much broader across the shoulder, with it’s head sunken deep into it’s neck, almost as if it had none and it lacked the towering pylons common to all Evangelion. It also walked very different, swaying like a pendulum at shoulders with each step.

From Unit 01: “Is that an Angel?” he asked.

From CC-M: “Yes. All indicators say that it is an Angel.” the image of Misato beside him nodded. “We don’t yet know it’s capabilities, or why it looks like this so you’ll all need to be careful.”

On the Command deck, Ritsuko was analysing the AT field patterns.

There was something strangely familiar about them, but for the life of her, she couldn’t place it.

Okay folks, that’s Chapter six, any comments, suggestions or ideas are welcome, as always at the usual address.

The short segments, before the title are there to show what happened before the beginning of this fic, in the year between Third Impact and Rei’s return in Unit 01. They wont necessarily be in sequence, or even be related to the current fic chapter. I did it because it hasn’t really been done before (Probably for a good reason methinks :) ) Think of it more as two fics for the price of one. Coming attractions include Asuka leaving, and Shinji receiving his recall letter.

The kid doing the welding, Sergei, is my Sixth Child character who’ll be introduced fully in a few chapter’s time.

Finally, My stat counter for chapter four told me only twenty people had read it, so I thought maybe most people had abandoned it and I wasn't going to continue a fic nobody was reading. It’s now pretty obvious that there was something wrong with the counter instead

I am going to continue this, for the foreseeable future anyway, so don’t worry. Once NPEva is done, which'll be soon enough, this'll probably become my main fic after it. So don't worry about me killing it.
