Two tents stood side by side. In one, the army's wounded waited to hear their fate. In the other, Katara labored to give birth to her first child.

Aang, alone in a corner of the first tent, writhed and screamed. The healers agreed: his time was short. When he still recognized his surrogate family, he had begged for everyone in the camp to stay away, because no one knew how dangerous he could be.

So because Aang died alone, no one witnessed a blue streak flowing from his chest and into the other tent just as life ended and began.
