KHII SPOILERS! MASSIVE KHII SPOILERS! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T COMPLETED THE GAME!
My author’s notes will be at the end and are VERY spoilery.
My first KHII-based story. I hope it’s all right!
Their first night back where it all began.
Together
They sat together on the beach, twilight giving way to night. They just needed to sit and listen to the waves, reminiscing among their own thoughts. It had been over a year since they’d been able to do this. Something that had been taken for granted back then was suddenly so special. They were back there on the beach, their beach, together again. And together they were happy. Things were how they should be.
Sora sat in the middle, Kairi on his left and Riku on his right. His bright blue eyes gazed up at the sky, flicking between the stars and trying to work out which one was Donald, Goofy and the King’s world. He smiled calmly, knowing that the Door to Light meant he’d be able to see them again any time he wanted or needed to. The Disney Castle trio had left before the sunset, promising to be in touch soon.
His hand slid over the sand, stretching out, finding Kairi’s and taking hold of it. She looked at him and smiled, squeezing his in return. The warmth flowed into him. He really had missed her so much. She slid closer, her head resting on his shoulder as her eyes watched the waves.
And Sora didn’t leave the sap-deprived Riku out. Sora threw his other arm around best friend’s (almost too) tall shoulders and gave him a grin. Riku couldn’t help but smile back. Sora’s enthusiasm for life was as infectious as ever.
“Figured it out then?” Sora asked. Trust him to break the silence.
“Huh?”
“You know – how you’re gonna face everyone.”
“Oh. That. Yeah I got it sorted.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“So…”
Riku smirked. “I figured if anyone tried anything, I’d just start crying.”
“You whaaaa-?”
Kairi began giggling.
“Yeah Sora, I’m gonna cry if anyone blames me. I’ll fall to my knees, cling to their hand…”
“H-hey!”
Riku laughed, yanked Sora closer and held him in place with an arm around his neck. He ruffled Sora’s hair with his knuckles, getting numerous “Ow’s!” out of Sora. “Yeah you haven’t changed much at all. Naïve and gullible as ever.”
Sora pushed Riku away. “I can’t help getting a little bit emotional…”
“It’s okay Sora,” Kairi said. “No one will be able to prove you cried but if Riku uses that tactic…”
“Ha ha! Everyone will call you a cry baby!” Sora declared triumphantly. “Come on, let’s go see everyone and make Riku cry!” He got to his feet… “Uh…” Two seconds later he was on his backside again. “Never mind. Let’s leave that for later.”
“Just sit still for a while,” Riku replied, stretching his legs out. “Give it a go for once.”
“You okay?” Kairi asked.
“I think I sat down too long. My legs are dead.”
“Yeah well, maybe that’s a good thing,” Riku replied. “It’ll be weird going home.”
“I guess I hadn’t thought about it,” Sora said. “Getting here was enough.”
“Let’s spend the night here,” Riku went on. “I just want to listen to the sea and enjoy being back here before I have to deal with everything else.”
Kairi poked Riku. “It is a little bit strange though, isn’t it, coming all the way back here after seeing so much.”
Sora leaned back. “All those other places and people out there made me miss everything I had here more than I thought possible. Travelling was fun but… home is home.” He sighed happily. “It made me value the things I had here more than I did before.” He held on to Kairi and Riku’s hands. “I’m so glad we all came home.”
“Yeah, me too.” Riku settled himself down on the sand and closed his eyes. “Hm, who would’ve thought it?”
Sora laid back as well. “We sure have got a lot to tell each other.”
“I bet I’ve got the most,” Riku teased even though he had his eyes shut.
Kairi agreed. “I’ve just been at school for a year. Nothing new there.”
“I didn’t mean it like that Kairi,” Riku replied. “I meant I’m not the one who slept for a year, am I Sora?”
There was no response.
“He’s asleep,” Kairi confirmed after several pokes went unanswered. “You’ll tell me everything tomorrow, right Riku?”
No response again. He was asleep too.
Kairi shook her head, turned and smiled up at the stars. “Thank you,” she whispered to the worlds. Her eyes suddenly filled with tears. Her lips quivered and sobs began to shake her. Yet still she smiled. She was so happy! She looked at Sora and Riku, their images blurring through her tears. She laughed but lost control and made the tears come faster. They were here, they were really here! She wiped the tears off her cheeks even as more fell. Was it too much to believe that everything was finally going to be fine?
His hand tugged on hers again. “It’s okay. Go to sleep. We’ll all be here in the morning.”
She rested her head on his legs, his hand leaving hers so it could rest in her hair. Soothed, she soon fell asleep and he didn’t take long to follow.
To be continued…At least one more part to go!
Spoilery Author’s Note:
Okay, so in my mind this is set just after the first part of the ending FMV – the one where Donald, Goofy and Mickey are there. I figure the later one – the one with the letter – is meant to be a little while later.
Thanks for reading!
