Chapter 1.
Rain pounded against dark castle walls. The storm raged huge waves into the castle sitting on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. The castle was quiet; all lights were out, most beings asleep through the common storm. But in one of the highest towers a young boy, about 15 sat starring at the thunderous waves.
“Malin” came an elderly voice from the hallway with a strong accent, causing the boy to jump. “What in Aldenmore are you doing up?” she said.
Marlin continued to stare out at the night “Horrible storm” he said acknowledging the elderly maid.
“Yes it is, but you really should be asleep or you’ll be sleeping through your lessons all tomorrow.” She pointed out.
He sighed “Yes, yes I know.” He was very tempted to inform her that it wouldn’t make it different than any other lesson really.
As black forbidding waves churned he wondered about his new friends. Were Zach and the mist wolves ok through this storm? Was it even storming there? Was it storming in the faerie realms with Lorren and Tasha to? He bet Adrianne and Kara were tucked away safely in their beds completely unaware of this weather. His heart skipped a beat as he thought of Emily. But before he could think any more, something caught his eye. A glint of silver in the water, he pressed against the glass to get a better look. Something was being tossed by the waves. He feared for it. The poor beast caught in this horror, he doubted if it were him if he could survive. He hoped it was tough. It was a sea dragon, a very shiny one at that. He could just barley make out its outline in the rain. But somehow the beast saw him; he saw it’s piercing brown eyes lock with his before the water churned over its head.
“What are you looking at?” questioned the maid.
“Nothing, nothing.” He sounded distracted as he turned back to his bed.
The old woman shrugged and continued past his room.
Out in the current, the animal resurfaced. Indeed it was tough, tougher then Marlin could have ever imagined. It was no sea dragon as he had thought, but a much rarer beast. It was a sea horse. No such creature existed today though; they had all evolved into sea dragons as their riders evolved from tails to legs. But this sea horse remained; it had a narrower head than its descendants and held even more majestic ways. A beautiful brown mane and forelock cascaded across its silver armor that Marlin had so foolishly mistaken for scales. It had fur, but special fur for water as no other beast had. Under water it had two long legs, ending at rock hard hooves instead of scaly claws. From its waist began a long sleek tail ending in a beautiful fin resembling that of its ancient riders. His tail was huge, about twelve feet in length.
It gazed up at the window but the curtains had already been shut. The tidal waves crashed down upon him, forcing him under now and again, but none of this broke his stare. Had he seen what he had thought he had seen? That boy, he looked so familiar, the horse gasped. It couldn’t be, could it? Had the time come? Had a thousand years really passed? It didn’t seem like that long but he supposed it must be, there was only one way to be sure. He had to find if the Drake had hatched again. Only then would he know it was time.
