65 seconds. That’s how long it was going to take. He’d worked it all out so that there would be no mistakes. Not like last time… He ran through what he’d have to do so he knew for sure… Casually walk to reception, flash the badge he’d borrowed off the very nice cop that was now plastered over the 6pm news, find Mr Grissom, shot him in the head. Easy.

Then all he’d have to do was get out with no hassle. So here he was, outside the crime lab, in his scorching SUV. All the windows were open, and theVegas heat was unbearable. Shift was only halfway through, so he knew theentomologist would definitely be there. Plus, hisTahoe was parked a few feet away…

65 seconds. Then it would all be over. He just needed the nerve…

Grissom watched through the glass at Sara. She was in the middle of interviewing their main suspect for the current case. The guy was an ex-junkie. That was clear. AndSara was starting to lose her nerve. He was acting like the whole situation was a softly knocked on the window, and smiled at her. Her face flooded with relief and she nodded, as an acknowledgement for him to come in. He complied, and shut the door behind him.

“Mr Johnson. My name's Gil Grissom.”

“My name’s Fangs.”

“Really? And why is that?”Grissom asked, clearly intrigued. He stood behind Sara, hands on his hips.

“Coz of the amount of weed I smoke, fool. Eat through it like a hungry wolf, geddit?”

“Yes Mr Johnson, I understand now. And you have no problem admitting to cops that you smoke marijuana?”

“No sir, I did my time. I didn’t mean now, man”

“Sure you didn’t. Does this mean you wouldn’t mind giving us a blood and urine sample to prove us wrong?”

“Hell no.” ‘Fangs’ stood up, scraping his chair across the floor. He lifted his shirt, and began undoing his belt. “What you want me to do, pee on the table.”

Grissomhad to smile. He had to admit, the guy was quite funny.

“No Mr Johnson, that won’t be necessary.”Sara assured him, placing a plastic container from her kit on the floor, to the middle of the table. “This cop here will escort you to the restroom if you’re shy. But I don’t think we’ll have any problems there.”

Sarasmiled sweetly one last time at Johnson, and followedGrissom out of the room.

“Nice work, Sara.”

“Thanks. But I didn’t really do anything. At least now we’re going to have his DNA.”

“We got him.”Grissom mumbled, placing his sunglasses over his eyes.

Nick whistled as he made his way down the corridor. End of shift soon and he couldn’t wait. As much as he loved his job, it was an amazing day out there. Theair wouldbe perfect for skydiving. Ever since the case involving the skydiving accident, Nick had been was tagging along too, which made it even better. Nick felt like him and Warrick were finally cool now, after everything that had happened.

He was too busy caught up in his own thoughts, that he didn’t notice the cop walking along behind him. He didn’t notice that the uniform was fake, and that the badge was over 10 years old. He didn’t notice that his gun was actually unholstered, which was against regulations. He should have noticed, but he didn’ was one of the best CSI’s in Vegas. And it wasn’t his fault that he didn’t pick up on the signs that he should have, because he had no reason to. No-one had ever really penetrated the lab before, as all reporters or unauthorised personnel were always carried on his way, thinking about the afternoon hehad in front of him when he was most at peace. In the air.

The cop tucked the gun into the waistband of his trousers, attempting to keep as much attention away from himself as possible.25 seconds… 26 seconds… 27 seconds…

Grissom sat staring at the computer in front of him. He never usually lost his cool. No-one ever usually pushed him far enough to a point where he ended up like this. The adrenaline was soaring through him. He sat with his head in his hands, exhaling deeply. She’d been for a half hour break to the beach, and came back with a deep purple black eye. Her sunglasses didn’t cover it, and when he’d taken them off himself he could also see the tell-tale puffiness of someone who’d been crying. All he’d wanted to do was hold her, and tell her everything was going to be ok. To ask her who’d done this to her, so he could sort it out himself. But he couldn’t. And that was what was bugging him the most. The fact that, after all this time, he still couldn’t tell her how he felt, and that made him more unsure of himself than usual. It would ruin everything. They had a great work relationship, and if he ever lost her…No, that wasn’t an option. He was never going to lose her. He would make sure of it.

“MrGil Grissom?” A husky voice from the doorway interrupted his thoughts.

“Yes?”Gil looked up, at the cop staring daggers at him. Didn’t the new uniform have buttons on the other side? Weren’t there two stripes running down the pant leg instead of one? Or had this thing with her made him paranoid? Was that a gun stuffed down his pants?

“I need to talk to you…” he walked in, closing the door behind him.

Grissomglanced around the corridor. It was empty. For the first time, the one time that he was unsure about something, no-one was around.

“Sure. What can I help you with, officer…?” The man moved closer, and Gil placed his arms on either side of the chair. Just in case he needed to stand up or draw his gun… Was that really what he’d seen tucked into his pants, or just a beeper? He couldn’t tell.

“Don’t stand up, don’t reach for your gun, don’t even move. This will all be over in a few seconds and you won’t feel a thing. I promise. You just have to answer me one question.”

It was a gun. The blood seemed to stop flowing around his body. It wasn’t tucked in the guy’s pants anymore though. It was pointed straight at Grissom’s heart.

“Anything.”

“Do…you…really…love…her?”

Sara looked at herself in the restroom mirror. She was a mess. Why had she let him do it to her? Why did she take all the abuse, and crap from him? He was supposed to be her friend, not someone who used her as a punch-bag. She was supposed to trust him. That was what friends were for…

The one person she wanted to really talk to wasn’t interested had been on her mind for too long, and it was becoming more than unbearable. So, she made a decision. He needed to know the truth about everything. Who hit her, why he did it, and the most important one. The way she really felt about him. No matter what happened as a result.

Prison gates won’t open up for me, on these hands and knees I’m crawling, all I reach for you.

I’m terrified of these four walls, these iron bars can’t hold my soul and all I need is you.

Come please, I’m calling. And all I scream for you…Hurry I’m falling.

He was on his knees behind the desk so no-one could see. The gun was jabbing into his head, which was bent low, trying to hide any emotion he words to the Nickelback song he loved ran through his mind. It was the one of the one songs that wasn't jazz that he loved. Everytime he heard it, he thought of her. And now, he couldn’t get the lyrics out of his head. So, he sang them to himself, thinking of her and only her. She would be the one thing to get him through this. She would be the one thing that kept him from any pain and regret.

Show me what its like, to be the last one standing.

Teach me wrong from right, and I’ll show you what I can be.

She thought about the song she’d heard on the radio that morning, and the way the lyrics had reminded her of him, and they way she thought that he’d sing like if given the chance… Laughing at the thought, she carried on down the corridor, seeing no-one on her way. If anyone could have read her mind, they’d be laughing and singing didn’t really end up in the same sentence. Neither didGrissom and Nickelback. It just wasn’t him…

So why couldn’t she get the lyrics out of her head?

And say it for me, say it to me, and I’ll leave this life behind me, say it if its worth savin me..

Heavens gates won’t open up for me, with these broken wings I’m falling...

All I see, is you.

These city walls ain’t got no love for me..

“Are you going to answer me, or are you just gonna sit there and stare at the floor forever?”

“Sorry sir, I was just thinking, that if you’d came here to shoot me, you’d have done it already. Someone may walk in soon. Do you really think this is the best way for them to see you?”

“No, I suppose it isn’t. So just answer my question, and I can get this over with.”

Grissomfelt the gun pressed even further into his head. His life would soon be over. She would never know how he felt. She would never know the amount of regrets that he had. And he would never be able to spend his life with her. Although these thoughts had never really stayed in his mind for very long, they’d always been had never allowed himself to think about her in that way. It would only cause himself trouble and despair. But now, with death imminent, he let himself imagine what his life could have been. Would they have announced themselves as a ‘couple’ to the whole lab? Would they have shared their most intimate secrets over food and wine? Would she have changed him enough to show the emotion that no-one ever usually had the chance to see? And would she had felt the same way that he felt about her, wondering why, after all this time, his arms weren’t around her to hold her during the monstrous thunderstorms that rockedVegas. That was what he wanted. He had wanted her for too long. And a family. Their family. A baby that they could call theirs…

The guy played with the slide of the gun, as if taunting him.

“Mr GrissomI am losing my patience here… Do you love her?”

“Yes.”he whispered, a defeated man. “Yes I do love Sara. With all and more of my heart.”

“Thankyou.” The man smiled, and cocked the trigger.

And all I need is you, And all I scream for you…Hurry, I’m falling

Show me what its like to be the last one standing…

She heard it. She wished she hadn’t, but she had. The sound she heard everyday, and now it stopped her dead in the corridor. Why had she heard the sound of a slide moving like that in the middle of the lab? The only place authorised for gunfire was the Ballistics lab, and she knew that was empty. That meant…No way, there couldn’t be someone who…No…

Sara shook her head to try and get rid of the scenarios running through her mind.

The door to his office was open, and she could hear voices from inside.

“Mr Grissom, I am losing my patience here… Do you love her?”

Who’s voice was that? She’d heard it before, but she couldn’t place it. And who was he talking about?

Yes.” She heardGrissom whisper. In all the time she’d ever known him, he’d never sounded that…deflated. It was as if all his confidence had been forced out of him. “Yes I do love Sara. With all and more of my heart.”

She’d heard wrong. He hadn’t just said had been talking about loved her. With all and more of his heart. That just wasn’t possible. How could he? She hadn't expected a gorgeous guy like him to stay single for the rest of his life, but she just assumed that he was waiting for the right woman. Like the perfect gentleman would. And as much as she’d considered it and even wanted it at some points in her life, she never assumed that it would be a reality.

Lifting her gun from her holster, she hid behind the door, and glanced around to look inside. The stranger was dressed in a cop uniform, which looked legit. But the stripes down the pants had changed last year hadn’t they?

Grissommust have been behind the desk, because she couldn’t see him. She heard his breathing though. Deep and slow. Then, he lifted his head, and she could see the faint outline of hisgreying hair along the line of the desk. And in that instant, she knew that he knew she was there. And that meant more to her than anything at that moment.

This was taking way too long. 65 seconds, that was all he had planned it to take. Now though, he was running on close to nearly 4 minutes. Someone would be along soon. But it was as though he’d lost his nerve. He saw the pain in Grissom’s eyes. He saw the love he felt for Sara, and he couldn’t do that to her. As much as he wantedGrissom dead, he saw that he was the right man for her. He would care for her, and stay with her no matter what. He always had. She just hadn’t known how he really felt. So maybe this would give him the push he needed to admit his feelings.
Grissom lifted his head, sniffing cautiously. Was he imagining it? He could smell her. She’d worn the same perfume for almost two years. It was the one present he’d got her for her birthday and she still bought that same one even now. She was out there. She may have even heard his confession but right now he didn’t care. If she got hurt because of all this, he would never forgive himself. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself. So he decided in that split second that he would force this guy to pull the trigger. It would protect her from any pain. And that was all he wanted.
“I’m sorry.” The guy mumbled, dropping the gun on the looked up to him, the confusion clear on his face. “You do love her. You would die for her right?”Grissom nodded, slowly and carefully standing up, kicking the gun away. “I knew you would. Tell her. She never loved me as much as I loved her. She didn’t even know I existed. But she knows you, and I know she loved you too. So tell her how you feel. Please.”

Grissomnodded again, his breathing returning to normal. But then the completely unexpected happened. The guy moved back towards the handgun.

“Sir…”Grissom warned him, the fear back in his voice. “SIR…” he repeated, even more unsure as the guy picked it up.

“I really am sorry, but this is the way it has to be. For your sake and hers. Tell her I loved her ok.”

And with that, he pulled the trigger. Grissom fell to the screamed and ran in the room, her gun left forgotten in the corridor. She ran over toGrissom and placed one hand on his cheek, the other on his chest.

“Speak to me Gil…Hey…Speak to me…Say something. Please…” her tears fell, landing on his dark blue shirt.

“Hey…” he mumbled, coughing slightly. The fall had obviously knocked the wind out of him.

“You big baby!”Sara laughed, leaning down to wipe his tears away. “Jumping at the sound of gunfire, eh? How are we going to last?”

“He…He really did it. He came in here to shoot me, and shot himself. I don’t think that was how he planned all this.”Grissom glanced over at the body, but then turned back to Sara. “Do you recognise him?”

Sara looked over too, cringing slightly at the brain matter splattered across the wall.

“I think so…He’s my neighbour, Mikey Green…”

“Did you know he liked you?”

“No…” she mumbled, gazing into Grissom’s amazing blue eyes. ”I don’t think he was expecting you to admit you loved me the way you did.”

“You heard?”

“Yes handsome, I heard. And…I love you too.”

“Really?”

“Yep. With all my heart and more.” She smiled at him, and helped him sit up.

“Looks like we better get to work then?”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that.” He winked at her, slowly leaning in to kiss her. “We can wait a little bit longer, right?”

“Well, I’m not so sure about that…”Sara smiled, wrapping her arms inside his blazer. “We’ve waited too long already.”

“Better catch up for the lost time then…”

Say it if it’s worth savin me…
