In Kat and Pat's apartment.

Kat arrives home from a day at college.

Mr Stratford

Kat: I'm home. (pulls the keys out of the apartment door and puts them on the hook in the hall)Where are you?

Pat: On the fire escape.

(Kat walks out onto the fire escape)

Kat: What are you doing out here?

Pat: Thinking.

Kat: Thinking? You haven't been smoking have you?

Pat: No! You know I'm trying to quit.

Kat: You smell like smoke.

Pat: It's the guys at work, they smoke.

Kat: Are you ok with that?

Pat: It was just one little smoke.

Kat: What!

Pat: You know, for image.

Kat: NO! I DON'T WANT YOU TO! YOU ARE A NO SMOKING AREA NOW! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU? SMOKING CAN KILL! I DON'T WANT YOU DEAD! WHO WOULD PAY THE RENT THEN?

Pat: Is that the only thing that is important to you? MONEY?

Kat: No that's your area.

Pat: I'm sorry, I never wanted to bring anything like that up again!

Kat: Well it's hard for you. Just try not to hang with them when they smoke. I'll get you a stronger patch. Or do you want gum?

Pat: Gum.

(Phone rings)

Kat: I'll get it.

Pat: And I'll just wait here.

Kat: That'd work. runs to get the phoneHello?

Bianca: Hi Kat! How are you!

Kat: Hi! We're just great!

Bianca: We?

Kat: Oh! Me, I'm just great and my, er goldfish.

(Pat hears what is going on and walks up to Kat. Kat covers receiver with her hand)

Kat: What should I do?

Pat: Get a goldfish?

Bianca: Pat's there?

Mr Stratford: (Standing behind Bianca)Pat's there? Give me the phone! (Grabs phone off Bianca) What is Pat doing there! I heard he was moving! But this doesn't seem like a visit!

Kat: We got accommodation, together.

Mr Stratford: An apartment!

(Kat goes into the kitchen and finds a bag of candy, she pulls out an empty wrapper)

Mr Stratford: You and Pat! I pray it has two rooms!

Kat: (puts wrapper to receiver and makes static noises with it)Dad! DAD! We are breaking up! I HAVE TO GO NOW! (Hangs up)

Pat: Clever.

Kat: They won't find out how many rooms we have for a long time. I like to keep them in suspense.
