Nyoko: Hello, everyone! This is my fanfic set in an AU (Alternative Universe). This universe is not the same as your usual Sonic world; it takes place in the Victorian Times. I like those times because they're perfect for a romance story. Remember, this is a ShadAmy. And don't worry, Shadow is NOT going to be OC (Out of Character), I'll explain the behavior later in the story. Now that that's over with!

Disclaimer: I don't own the Sonic characters, only a cookie! Amy, Shadow, and the other characters are owned by Sega/Sonic Team.

She saw him walk away into the night, a tear rolled down her face. All that was left of him was the echo of his last words...

"A heart lost in the darkness, will always find the light. You're the one that lit my path..."

THE END

Amy closed the book she was reading; she always enjoyed a good book. She opened her purse and pulled out a tissue with her gloved hand. The pink hedgehog brought it up to her emerald eyes and cleared the salty rivers that flowed, 'That was a great book! I wish life was that exiting and full of love, even though-'

"Miss Rose," the carriage driver spoke to Amy, interrupting her thoughts.

"What is it?" she replied mildly annoyed.

"We've arrived, ma'am."

Amy put her book and tissue inside her purse. The door of the carriage opened and she walked out. The petite female was dressed in a purple corset with a matching skirt of a darker shade. She wore a pearl choker that decorated her neck nicely; she had a head band with two feathers sticking by the side, and long gloves.

As soon as her feet touched the ground, she heard the squeals and giggles of a certain rabbit. Amy's face lit up at the sound of her sweet voice.

"Amy! Amy!" Cream exclaimed. The little yellow rabbit dressed in white ran and hugged her.

"It's nice to see you too, Cream!" The rose hedgehog held her in a tight embrace.

"It's been some time, Amy," a mysterious voice said besides her. Amy released the small rabbit from her hug and turned around to find the owner of the voice. Her emerald eyes found a white bat standing strong and tall. "Happy to see me?" said Rouge as she winked at her small friend.

"Yes!" Amy responded as she threw her arms around the older female and gave her a big hug. "How have you been?"

"I've getting by, but I'll be alright..." the bat grinned, "The important thing is you now. Tell us how things are doing back home."

"I'll tell you if you invite me an ice cream!" Amy beamed.

"Well, you haven't changed in four years!" Rouged said slightly amused by her pink friend's sudden request.

"Jack, can you please put my things inside my hotel room?" the rose hedgehog asked her carriage driver nicely.

"Yes, ma'am," he responded and then ordered the horses to go ahead. The carriage left, and the three girls stood in the side walk.

"Well then, let's go get some ice cream!" the female hedgehog said as she wrapped her arms around her two friends.

The three girls walked to a bar not far from their current location. As they walked around the town Amy admired everything around her. She used to live in that town since she was born, but she had to move four years ago because of her family. Her dad's boss offered him a job in another town, and they moved when she was fourteen.

The town was big and beautiful; it had stone walls protecting it from the outside, a fountain in the middle of the town, a rose garden where a lot of couples went to, and a lot more. As the pink hedgehog looked around she spotted a huge mansion in the east side of the town; not only was it immense, but it was elegant as well. The walls were made of black bricks, and black and red roses climbed them. Wine-colored curtains covered the windows. The front yard had golden dragon and lion decorations, and it had a fountain shaped like an angel. The rose hedgehog stared in awe at the mansion for a long time, there was something that she was attracted to, but she didn't know what.

"We're here!" Cream exclaimed as she walked inside the bar.

As they walked inside the saloon they saw two people arguing. One of them was a blue hedgehog in a black suit; the other was a black hedgehog with red stripes dressed in a wine-colored trench coat, with black pants, a tie, and boots. Amy recognized the blue hedgehog, she had a huge crush on him when she lived in that town; however, he always ignored her and ran away from her. The day she left, he never came to see her or even say good-bye. Her heart was broken by him, Sonic the Hedgehog.

"Look buddy, ever since you put a foot on this town you've been causing me problems!" Sonic glared at the dark hedgehog, "I'm not to brag or anything, but I AM the best fighter in this town, and you don't stand a chance against me!"

"You're all talk," the black hedgehog let a sigh escape his lips, "and besides, you're the one that's been causing me problems..."

"What'd you say?!" Sonic stood up from his seat so fast that the stool dropped to the floor.

"Sonic, chill!" A red echidna dressed in gray said to him.

"Yeah, Sonic! It's not worth it!" A yellow two-tailed fox dressed in blue pleaded.

"Yeah, the fox is right, it's not worth my time," the black hedgehog said before standing up and walking away.

But Sonic was too irritated to let him go, "You're not leaving! At least, not without a fight!"

The black hedgehog had an irritated look on his face. The quarrel transformed into a fist fight, and Sonic started throwing wild punches towards the black hedgehog, but he dodged them easily. As the blue hedgehog saw that didn't work, he tried kicks, but those failed as well. His temper was running short, and the dark hedgehog just grinned at him, making a mockery out of the fight.

"Hmph." The black hedgehog seemed bored and decided to end the fight by kicking Sonic and sending him flying against a wall, "Next time... don't make a fool of yourself."

"Agh..." the blue hedgehog winced.

"If you want to fight me," the ebony hedgehog averred, "don't let your anger drive you."

Cream ran to see Sonic and Rouge followed her, but Amy watched from the door in awe; it was amazing how easily the dark hedgehog got rid of Sonic. The blue hedgehog was an extremely good fighter, and he lost to this guy with just one move?

'Impossible! Who is this guy?!' the pink hedgehog inquired in her head.

The ebony hedgehog walked towards the door and Amy just stared at him. When he passed by her they exchanged glances. For a moment she felt time stop; that moment seemed like minutes, no, hours! Her heart stopped and so did her breath; her eyes locked on with his, no words were exchanged with their lips, but with their eyes.

"Who are you...?"

"No one..."

As she continued to study his features, something struck her, "Don't I know you..?"

"Perhaps..."

That moment would've lasted forever if it weren't because he turned his head and walked away. The rose female wanted to stop him, but she just stayed still, frozen on her spot. Reality was back, her heart started beating, and she could finally breathe. After a few minutes of staring outside the bar, she ran to see Sonic.

"That stupid..." Sonic tried to stand up, Tails offered help, but he didn't want any. He couldn't believe that he lost to that guy!

"Sonic!" Amy cried out and ran to see him; the blue hedgehog seemed surprised when he saw her. "Are you okay...?" she said with a worried tone.

"Ah, yes," Sonic grinned and stood up easily, forgetting the pain he felt, "it was just a scratch!"

"Seems the only thing that was broken was his ego," Knuckles laughed.

"Well, now that we're here," Rogue took the petite hedgehog's hand and embraced her, "look whose back!"

"Amy! What brought you back to these parts?" the red echidna inquired.

"Just visiting my friends and spending some time here again!"

"That's great news Amy!" Tails exclaimed with a big smile on his face.

"Well, I came here to get some ice cream, and I don't see anything on my hands!" the small hedgehog jested.

"Hold your horses, Amy!" Knuckles looked around, "Let's go find a table."

They all sat down in round a table, and ordered some food. The group of friends started talking to Amy about the all the things that happened in four years; things such as politics, construction done to the town, finances, and so on. She listened with attention, but her mind was lost in a dream. That black hedgehog was in her head, and she couldn't let him out. Her thoughts wondered off without her even noticing. Those deep ruby eyes of his really got her attention, and she had a deep feeling that she may have met him before. For now the dark hedgehog was a complete mystery to her, and her head craved to find out who he was.

Music started playing, and Knuckles asked Rogue to dance, as so did Tails to Cream. At the end, there was only Sonic and her left. The rose hedgehog ate her ice cream without saying a word, while Sonic just stared at his drink for a long time.

"Amy." "Sonic." They both said at the same time. It stayed quiet for a second until Amy started laughing; the blue hedgehog couldn't help but smile at the sound of her laughter.

"You go first, Sonic," the pink hedgehog said with a big smile on her face.

The male hedgehog opened his mouth but nothing came out. He stayed quiet for a few seconds and then tried again, "I wanted to apologize."

"For what?" Amy knew why he said that, but she just played dumb. All those four years she tried to forget the reason. It took her a while to forget, but eventually, she forgave him without him knowing it.

"You know, for what happened," Sonic looked down at his drink.

"I don't understand."

"Four years ago, when you left," the blue hedgehog almost mumbled those last words.

The pink hedgehog felt her heart sting and almost flinched, but she held her head high and tried to hold it in, "Yeah, you never came to see me go..." Amy pocked her ice cream with the spoon, "Or even say a word to me."

Sonic rose his gaze, "I'm sorry."

"There's nothing to worry about, that's in the past..." Amy continued pocking the ice cream, 'And my heart is already broken.'

"I just wanted you to know that I was sorry," the male hedgehog's eyes locked on her, waiting for her to look at him, but she never did.

"Enough of that, like I said, that's in the past." The pink hedgehog released the spoon in her hands, "Now it's my turn. Sonic, who was that guy?"

Sonic rose an eyebrow, "You mean that bastard?"

"If you meant the person that you were fighting," Amy said solemnly, "then yes, him."

"He's just someone that loves to cause me problems," the blue hedgehog snorted. "I don't even ask for his opinion, and he's always there to give it to me. It seems that the guy has had something against me, ever since he started living in this town!" he held an irritated look on his face.

"When did he start living here?" The petite hedgehog inquired.

"The day you left, was the day he showed up." Sonic gazed at Amy and saw that she seemed interested, so he continued, "He lives in the big mansion on the east part of town. He seems to live alone too, cept for another guy named Espio."

"I see..."

"Why talk about him, anyway? Let's not waste our time." The blue hedgehog took Amy's hands on his, she felt her heart jump the moment he touched them, "Amy, now that you're back, I want to make it up to you."

"Umm-" the pink hedgehog didn't know what to say; even though he broke her heart, she still had strong feelings for him. What about if she fell in love with him again?

Sonic saw that this made her somewhat uncomfortable, so he let go of her hands and changed the topic, "Do you want to go outside and look around town?"

His sudden request pleased her, for she wanted to find out what changes occurred since she was gone. She nodded but then asked, "What about the others?"

"I'm sure they won't mind paying the bills," Amy smiled, and then walked outside with him.

"The town changed a lot since I last saw it," once again, Amy was sight seeing.

"Yes, it grew out to be pretty successful."

"It does have a lot of hard working people here!" the pink hedgehog said as she beamed and explored the town with her emerald eyes.

"And it's still growing."

"It's so beautiful!" the female walked quickly and examined the streets.

"Yes," Sonic gazed at Amy, "it's beautiful."

"So, where are we going?"

"As impatient as ever, now are we?" the blue hedgehog said mildly teasing his pink friend.

"Hehe, I guess I haven't changed," and with those words Amy was off to a fruit stand near them.

"I'm glad you didn't..." Sonic mumbled under his breath.

"What was that...?" the petite female said as she chose an apple from the stand.

The male hedgehog just smiled at the innocent sight of Amy biting off an apple, "Nothing."

oOo

"We're here!" Both hedgehogs stopped in front of a field of roses, the rose garden of town to be exact. Amy's eyes traveled every inch of the garden. Her heart began racing and a sour smile, only visible by herself, was planted on her face. That place brought a memory back to her head...

---FLASHBACK---

Amy ran through the streets of the town, trying to find a certain blue hedgehog. She ran, and ran, until she found him sitting by a field. He turned around and saw her waving at him, he waved back, and she ran towards him.

"Sonnikku!" the small girl exclaimed with a big smile on her face.

"What is it, Ames?"

"Here, I brought this for you, please read it, okay?" The pink hedgehog didn't even give him time to answer before she spoke again, "I have to go now, bye!" Amy handed a note to the blue hedgehog with a bag of cookies she made, and then she ran off to her house.

Her eyes began to water as she ran through the fields, 'I hope he reads it, this may be our last time together.' She remembered every word she wrote in the letter:

Sonic,

Tomorrow I'm leaving this town, and it may be the last time I see you. If you read this note, please meet me tomorrow morning at the rose garden they're making. Please come to see me, I have something very important to tell you. I'll be waiting for you.

With love,

Amy Rose

The pink hedgehog smiled at herself, looking forward to the next day.

oOo

The next morning Amy woke up early and put her best dress on; it was red and it had a drawing of a black rose on the skirt. She made sure she looked good, and then she ran off to the rose garden. The teenage girl imagined seeing Sonic there, smiling at her, waiting for her with open arms.

When she got to the rose garden, she didn't see anyone. 'That's alright... he's probably late, he's never on time.'

Amy sat on a rock bench in the garden. She waited for an hour, and he didn't show up; then two hours and nothing. She started making up excuses on her head for his absence as time went by. She knew he would come; she wished he would come. Hours and hours passed, and Sonic never showed up. By sundown the rose hedgehog was still waiting, until she realized he would never come. Her eyes got watery and she started crying. If only he would've come, she would've asked him to come along with her.

A shadow saw her crying her heart out and watched in silence. Long sobs were heard all over the garden as the small female cried non-stop. The shadow picked up a rose and walked towards her. Her emerald orbs spotted him from the corner of her eyes and she turned to see him. The shadow turned out to be a young hedgehog of an ebony color with red stripes.

"Wh- who ar- are you?" Amy said between sobs.

"No one," he simply responded and handed the rose to her.

She gladly took it and stared at it deeply; it was white, representing peace and purity, "Thank you."

The young male looked up at the sky, "Don't waste your tears on a fool who doesn't know what he has."

The young girl's eyes widen, "How did you-?!" She looked at him in surprise, 'How did he know why I was crying?'

"Common sense." The ebony hedgehog locked his ruby orbs with her emerald ones, "Why would a girl be crying in a rose garden? Chances are: she lost someone, she was waiting for someone, or her heart was broken."

Amy stared deeply into his orbs and then turned away. She stayed there with her dark companion in silence. After a few moments her face had no more tears, all she had left was a broken heart.

---END OF FLASHBACK---

The rose hedgehog's eyes widened when she realized,

"It was him!"

A/N: How was the chapter? I hope you liked it. Like I said before, Shadow is NOT going to be OC; I have my reasons of making him act that way. Oh, and by the way, I have nothing against Sonic; he will NOT be a bad guy or an antagonist. Take care and thanks for reading!
