Naruto sat in the grass, his head titled back. The sun was golden warmth upon his face, and the wind was a hand through his blonde hair. He sighed and breathed in deeply, inhaling the scent of cherry blossoms. As he rested his hands in his lap, he felt a comfortable weight settle against his back.
Naruto didn’t need to open his eyes to see who it was. He just knew. “Why are you here?” A simple question, but Naruto asked it.
He felt the other lean against his back harder, their head falling back upon Naruto’s shoulder. The reply was, “Actually, I have no idea.”
Naruto smiled slightly, his eyes still shut tight. “For forgiveness maybe? To repent? Who am I fooling? Uchiha’s don’t repent, it goes against their never ending supply of pride.” Naruto said mockingly.
There was a silence that settled between them for the moment, and they continued to rest against each other, back to back, neither one looking at the other. “To remember.” Came the husky reply to Naruto’s first questions.
“What is there to remember?” Naruto asked curiously.
“Everything. Nothing. You.”
Naruto smirked; a short and direct answer, he thought, so typically like him to do so. Then, once again, they both settled into a somewhat tense, but peaceful silence. Naruto naturally was the one to break it. “Sasuke?” He asked guardedly.
“Yes?”
“What if none of this ever happened? Where would we be then?”
Sasuke laughed bitterly, “Don’t think that way dobe-”
“Don’t call me THAT dammit!” Naruto snarled.
“-but I would have gotten pissed off at you somehow and we would have fought. You and I both know that Konoha was never big enough for the two of us; we both always wanted to be the best.”
Suddenly Naruto felt the cold sting of Sasuke's katana digging into his neck. "Or just maybe I could end it all now..." Sasuke whispered against Naruto's neck.
Naruto closed his eyes even tighter and smiled mockingly. "Do it. Can you?"
The blade left Naruto's neck abruptly.
Naruto felt Sasuke stand up; mostly because the warmth Sasuke provided was chilled by the wind immediately. “I came to give you this.” Sasuke muttered quietly.
Naruto jumped slightly as he felt something drop into his lap. As soon as his sky blue eyes opened for the first time throughout the entire conversation, he turned to look for Sasuke, but he already disappeared from sight. Naruto sighed and looked down at the object in his lap.
As he looked at it, he smiled gently in memory; it was a wrinkled picture of him and Sasuke sitting together on a roof overlooking Konoha on a warm summer night. He remembered taking the picture himself, much to Sasuke’s dismay; the Uchiha hadn’t wanted the picture, but Naruto forced him to keep it.
On the wind Naruto heard a soft, “This is my final goodbye, Naruto.”
Naruto glanced at the trees and smiled regretfully, then looked at the fine scrawl on the back of the picture. I don’t need it, and I never needed it baka!
Naruto ran his hand over his eyes and sighed, “I always loved you for who you were, even though I hated it.”
With that he began to walk back towards the village. Not too far away from the place they had been sitting, a lone tree stood. Behind it, a raven haired missing nin smirked and said to himself, “I know.”
