Caitlin stood in the center of the roof, watching Miles with concern. He was gazing at what was left of their hometown with unsettling concentration. "Are you okay?"
An almost imperceptible nod was her only answer.
"Is something coming?"
He cocked his head ever so slightly before turning abruptly to face her, flushed with excitement.
"They?" her heart rate sped up. A mistake, it had to be…but Miles' instincts never lied. "Are you sure?"
He nodded furiously. "I knew they wouldn't leave us here! They couldn't; we're-!"
"Kids?" a man stepped around the side of the building followed by a tired looking woman. Rich and Laura. The two groups had met during the tsunami and bonded simply because there wasn't anything else to do on a rooftop in the middle of a newly formed ocean. "What's up?"
"Yer not serious. Are you sure? That freaky liddle monster thing didn't lie did 'e?"
The 'monster's' tamer scowled. "Nim is NOT a monster and no, he can't lie."
"Boys, this isn't the time to bicker." Laura stifled a low yawn with her hand before turning to Caitlin. "Are alright? That concussion was nasty."
"I'm fine. Did you hear what he said? They're coming! There's hope now! We might not be left like this!"
As one, the four of them turned to look out at the horizon of a wet, frozen wasteland, praying it would begin to move again.
For the petitions were coming, rolling into the producers and channel headquarters by the floods, begging and demanding, cajoling and pleading, for the continued existence of the adventure.
The fans had come.
They would not let Surface die and they most certainly would not abandon their favorite characters to wallow in loneliness on a rooftop in the middle of a submerged island.
Each and every one made a difference.
The universe contained in the program just prayed it was not too late.
