Back Home Again, an ER fanfic

Title: Back Home Again

Summary: Lucy survives the stabbing, and after she recovers and graduates, goes to work out of state. She returns during the events of season 10 episode The Student, sees how Carter treated Neela and confronts him before he leaves for the airport. Will continue through the rest of season 10, 11, 12 and 13 but will not exactly follow canon. The pairings are Ray/Neela, Abby/Luka, Abby/Lucy/Neela friendship and Carter/Lucy friendship.

AN: I got inspired to write this when I wrote the part in Fighting For Love, when Abby was thinking about Lucy right after Ray was hurt.

Right as Dr. Elizabeth Corday has called Lucy's time of death at 2:56 am, and Dr. Robert Romano has thrown the tray against the wall in anger, they both hear an unexpected sound. Lucy's heart started to beat, Elizabeth checks her pulse, and then she smiles at Robert, who is staring at Lucy in stunned shock.

" We got her back, Robert."

" Okay, Lizzie, let's fix those clots before we lose her again."

Dr. Romano walked over to Lucy's side and both doctor's did what needed to be done and closed her back up, both of them praying that she is through the worst of it now.

Carter was coming to in recovery and Dr. Benton was checking his motor functions and asking him questions about his condition. Carter looked at Benton finally and asked the inevitable question that Benton knew he would.

" How's Lucy?"

" It was rough there for awhile, she developed PE and they were doing a greenfield filter to stop the clots when she flatlined and they had actually called the time of death when her heart started beating again."

Carter didn't say a word, just laid his head back and tears of relief trailed down his cheeks, happy that Lucy didn't lose her life because of his mistakes. Benton continued to check him without either men saying another word.

Lucy and Carter both recovered from their injuries and Lucy with a lot of extra hard work, graduated medical school on time. Abby, who would visit Lucy everyday while she was in the hospital, and Lucy became the best of friends, telling each other all of the others secrets. Everybody in the ER attended Lucy's graduation, except for Carter, whose guilt over his part in allowing the stabbing to happen, caused him to avoid Lucy and he became addicted to pain medication. Lucy decided not to take the match is psychiatry at County and instead decided to do her internship in Emergency Medicine at a prominent hospital in San Francisco. She and Abby exchanged email addresses and vowed to write each other everyday. Lucy left the hospital the day before a school shooting the caused tension between Luka and Peter Benton, and when Abby caught Carter injecting himself with pain medication in one of trauma rooms.

Three and a half years went by, a lot of people came and went at County, while Lucy was the Chief Resident of the ER at the hospital she works at. The only time she was tempted to come home to Chicago was when Abby emailed her and told her that Mark Greene had passed away, the first person who was there for her when she came to County as a third year med student. Lucy had some vacation time and decided to go visit her old friends at County, Abby was the only one who knew she was coming. She arrived on a busy day, when she walked in she was stunned by all of the changes and walked over to the triage desk to ask for Abby. A young nurse with blonde curly hair, was there and she went to get Abby. Abby came out and hugged her old friend who had changed a lot in the last three years, she had colored her blonde hair brown and had a lot more confidence in her walk and attitude than when she left.

" Lucy! I'm glad you finally made it here." she said, taking her through the automatic doors into the ER.

Abby stopped at the triage desk and talked to the nurse sitting there, who was looking at Lucy with a curious look on her face.

" Sam, this is Dr. Lucy Knight, Lucy, this is Samantha Taggert."

" Nice to meet you." Lucy said, smiling shaking her hand.

" Nice to meet you too." Sam said, then she realized something. " You are the young woman who nearly died about four year ago, aren't you?"

" Yes, I am very lucky to be here and to be alive. It was through the help of Drs. Romano and Corday and the staff at the time in the ER that I made it."

" Lucy!"

All three women turn around and see Elizabeth Corday and Kerry Weaver standing there with a woman with short blonde hair, who is about seven months pregnant. They all walk over to her and Elizabeth hugs her.

" How are you doing?"

" I'm wonderful. I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Greene, I'm sorry I couldn't make it for the funeral, we were very short in the ER. I am also sorry to hear about Dr. Romano."

" Thank you, Lucy."

All six women continued to talk as they introduced Lucy to Susan Lewis, when Lucy heard the voice of the one person she was torn between wanting to see and dreading the moment they came face to face again. When she left, she tried to say goodbye to him but he was so high from his addiction that he was very rude to her. She saw him talking to a young woman of Indian descent and what she overheard him telling the young woman brought back memories that chilled her to the bone, especially when he told her to be a shark and that she was going to be in charge of a whole lot of patients. Abby saw her looking towards them and could tell by the look on Lucy's face something was wrong with her.

" Lucy, what's wrong?"

" Who is that young woman Carter is talking to?"

" Her name is Neela Rasgotra, she is a fourth year medical student. I think she is working with Carter today."

" Abby, I have a bad feeling about this, what he said to her sounds a lot like some of things he said to me when I was his student and he tied me up in knots. I was hoping that he had changed."

" Lucy, he has been under a lot of stress, his pregnant girlfriend went back to Africa and he is missing her."

" That isn't an excuse. I know he is trying to help Neela but talking to her like that will not give her the encouragement she needs."

" Let's hope everything turns out okay."

" I know, Abby, for her sake as well as any patients she treats."
