When It Counts

The room was quiet, bathed in shadows. There were no infomercials, no distractions. Sam's entire focus was on Dean, who slept, oblivious. It had been close. Too close. The poltergeist had gotten the drop on them, literally in Dean's case, and it had been by the skin of his teeth Sam had saved him.

Now, transfixed, Sam couldn't stop watching Dean's chest as it rose and fell. He'd failed too many times in his life. He'd flunked tests and never lived up to their father's expectations but he'd be damned if he failed when he counted. He wouldn't fail Dean.
