Chapter 1: Loner

The annoying buzz of the alarm clock woke Piper up early that morning. She sighed as she realized it was Monday again. She loved learning new things, but she hated the constant torment she received from her peers. To them, she was the school freak, but the only reason why they viewed her that way was because of the fact that she didn’t participate in any clubs, she wasn’t “pretty enough”, and she had glasses, braces, a face full of zits and her clothes seemed like they came from twenty years ago. The only way they even knew she existed was because of Prue. Prue was the head cheerleader and the most popular girl in school. She even was going out with the captain of the football team.

“Piper, come on, we’re gonna be late,” her youngest sister, Paige, said when she opened the door.

“Alright, alright already,” Piper replied annoyed as she got up and went to her closet. A few moments later, Piper managed to come down in a white t-shirt, a pair of ripped jeans and her hair pulled back.

“Do you have to wear that to school?” Prue asked in disgust.

“Well, I didn’t have time, so what do you want from me?” Prue sighed instead of answering and grabbed her keys. One by one the Halliwell sisters left the house.

After dropping off Phoebe and Paige, Piper and Prue walked into the building that was known as San Francisco High. Prue walked down the hall with confidence as Piper sighed before walking to her locker. When she reached it, there was a surprise waiting for her. And this wasn’t the type of surprise you write home for. It was a giant sign that read:

THE FREAK WAS HERE!

Piper ripped it off and dumped it into the dumpster. She was happy about it somewhat, it wasn’t as bad as the time they tried to give her a swirly. Her day began to get worse when the warning bell rang. She usually was early for class, and helped the teacher out, but today she wouldn’t have time if she didn’t get there. She raced down the hall, almost knocking down every person that was in her way. But she was stopped when she crashed straight into a teacher. Laughter filled the hallway as she looked up to see the angry expression on his face.

“And where were you trying to get to in such a hurry?” She sighed as she picked up her books, “Class Sir.”

“Are you aware of the school’s rule on running in the hallway?”

“Yes.”

“So you did it because you didn’t care?”

“No Sir, I was trying to get to class.”

“Well, right now, you’re coming with me to the principal’s office.” She sighed once more as she followed him. When they reached the office, he pointed his finger at an old wooden chair, “You sit here.” She did as she was told and waited to meet with the principal. Ten minutes passed before a woman in a navy-blue dress suit came out. Her eyes grew wide when she gazed upon Piper’s presence.

“Miss Halliwell, what are you doing here?”

“I was caught running in the hallway,” Piper replied softly. She sat next to Piper, “Well why were you running?”

“Because I didn’t want to be late to class.”

“Well, that’s still no reason to run in the hall.”

“I know Ma’am.” The principal thought about it, “Since you don’t usually get into trouble, I’ll let you slide. But let this be a warning to you.”

“Yes Ma’am, I understand.” She nodded and Piper got up from the chair and went to the secretary’s desk.

“May I please have a pass to class?”

“What’s your name?”

“Piper Halliwell.”

“Did the Miss Wilson excuse you for being here?”

“Yes Ma’am, she did.”

“Okay, hold on, let me get the slips.” Piper nodded.

It wasn’t long before the lady returned with a filled-out pass and handed it to Piper. Class was halfway over before she got there.

“Miss Halliwell, nice of you to join us,” Mrs. Honey said as she took the slip from Piper’s hand. Snickers filled the room as Piper went to her seat. Missy Campbell, another one of the school’s most popular girls, turned around and remarked, “Had a nice fall?” Instead of giving her the satisfaction of an answer, Piper kept moving until she reached her desk.

When the bell rang to signify the end of the class period, Piper rushed out the door and into the hall. It was lunchtime for her, but she wasn’t so eager to get there. As always, she would take out the lunch Grams packed for her and walk to the very edge of the cafeteria. There, a table that looked very lonely was calling Piper’s name. And as always, she would eat her lunch alone and threw her bag away before heading to the library. But today, as she began eating her lunch, a cute guy with sandy-blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes came up to her table.

“Can I sit here?” She looks up, “Yeah, if you don’t mind getting laughed at because you’re sitting with the school freak.”

“I’ll take my chances,” he said with a smile on his face.

“What’s your name?” Piper asked.

“Leo Wyatt, yours?”

“Piper Halliwell.” They shook hands.

“So, Piper, do you sit here alone often?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I don’t see why, you seem very nice.”

“Thanks, I guess.”

“Sorry if I offended you. I’m new around here and I don’t know how the high school system in California goes.”

“Me either, and I’ve been here longer.” Leo laughed, he really liked her and he only met her fifteen minutes ago.

The rest of the day went by better than Piper had anticipated. She now had a friend, someone to talk to who wasn’t related to her. They walked up the stairs that led to the manor and gave Piper her books.

“Thanks Leo for everything.”

“No problem, thanks for showing me around.”

“Anytime.” Piper turned around and started to go into the house. She gave him one last look before entering the house.
