Resolutions

A week after the funeral I walk home with Eleonor next to me. By the look on her face I can tell she is scared of talking to mom. I understand, her worry but she has to explain it to her, make her see how mistaken she is. Hopefully no one will get hurt.

I knock at the door, and I receive a welcome unlike the one I had the previous days. This time my mother has an angry look on her face the minute she sees Eleonor. We don't wait for an answer. At least I don't, and walk inside.

"Before you say anything," I snap. "We are here to talk not to fight and..."

"What is she doing here?" she says harshly "She is not welcome."

"Maybe I should leave" Eleonor says to me, and I take her hand.

"You are not going anywhere until we get this thing straight."

"Ray..." she says again.

"Let her leave" mom says. I'm starting to lose patience "So we can be in peace for once." This time I'm not the one who talks, but Eleonor.

"Listen ma'am. I haven't done anything for you to hate me so much. Yes, maybe your husband made a mistake when he cheated on you, but he also cheated on my mother...We never knew he had a wife or a son until I asked him. I have no intentions of taking your son's love as you think I did with your husband, but you have to understand that Ray is the only brother I have" She sighs. I see my mom has no reaction whatsoever and I decide it's time for us to leave.

"Wait..." Mom says before we walk out. We turn around slowly. "I can't forgive you," she says to Eleonor. "Or your father, but I understand what it is to live a lie and get hurt at the end...Just tell your mother I'm sorry."

"I will" Eleonor says. I walk a few steps closer to my mother and throw my arms around her.

I did not expect her to be friends with Eleonor because technically that was impossible but at least I know she understands. Even though it's hard, I know she does.
