Episode 1—Things Remembered
Téa Gardner looked up at her reflection in the mirror of the vanity she was currently sitting at. Brushing her not-quite- shoulder length brown hair. Her azure eyes looked back her and she gave herself a brilliant smile at her appearance. She was dressed in a black knee length skirt and a red button up blouse, a white beaded bracelet on her right wrist. The past year had been insane, so many things had happened and there was still six months out of her life that have been unaccounted for. The hardest thing besides the memory loss to deal with was the fact of Yugi and Serenity being together and then Téa had decided to take up Kaiba on his strange offer, which turned out to backfire on the both of them. He couldn't keep his promise of never wanting to see her again, he had said he wasn't done with her yet and blackmailed her into staying with him until he had grown tired of her…
She leaned her head back against the chair rest, and closed her eyes, remembering. It was just a few weeks ago when…
Her eyes suddenly popped open and it was dark, she had fallen asleep without meaning to. A strong arm was draped over her and recalling the 'incidents' she lifted up a little and turned her head finding 'him' asleep. He was flat on his stomach facing her direction with his eyes closed and a peaceful expression on his face. Téa gently moved his arm from around her and quietly sat up towards the edge of the bed, pulling her legs over the side she leaned over resting her elbows on her knees and her face in her palms.
What had she done?
Being intimate with Kaiba of all people, this course of action definitely would not get her what her heart truly wanted. Now she felt even worse than before. She slept with the enemy, the very one who tormented and insulted her and her friends on a daily basis, what would they think of her now? There was no way anyone could find out about this.
Her head snapped towards the digital clock on the nightstand, which read two thirty. She had to get out of there and back to Yugi's.
As to not wake him, Téa gently stood up and crept over to her clothing that was still crumpled on the floor and most likely still wet since they never did get sent down to be dried. They were cold and damp; she got dressed in those wet clothes. Where were her shoes, she turned around and jumped, startled as Kaiba was now sitting up, the blankets bunched at his waist, his eyes were narrowed in confusion as well as from sleep.
"Don't scare me like that!" Téa whispered harshly.
Seto took in her appearance. She was dressed except for her shoes. She was leaving already, was she? He had never been walked out on before since it was usually him doing the leaving in the middle of the night. Was she even going to say anything?
She spotted her shoes and bent for them, "Well uh, Kaiba." She sat down on the floor and started putting them on. "This is it, right? You're going to leave me alone now like you said."
He ran a hand through his now messed up hair feeling a tightening in his chest at her leaving. Té-Gardner rose to her feet and straightened the hem of her hoodie over her shirt and getting ready to walk out the door. Seto had thought that just once with her would get her out of his system, and for the first time in his life, he was wrong. Just looking at her right now, even in those ugly sweats he wanted more from her. He was not done.
"Actually, I've changed my mind."
"What?" Téa stepped forward, wondering if she heard him correctly.
"You're not deaf Gardner, and I didn't stutter now, did I?" He replied sharply. "I want more from you."
Téa couldn't believe her ears, "Y—you promised you'd leave me alone."
Seto scoffed with cold laughter, "and I've made a different decision." He knew she was going to argue the fact so before she could say anything he continued. "And unless you want certain friends of yours to find out about your involvement with me, I suggest you comply with my wishes."
"You wouldn't." She stared incredulous, her temper rising and her stomach falling into her feet.
"Not just your dorky friends either," He folded his arms behind his head and leaned against the headboard. "How about the media? I'm sure your parents will be thrilled to find out that their daughter has been fooling around while they were gone, ruining her future by a possible pregnancy because that's always a risk when sex is involved." He smirked.
"That won't work! You'd ruin yourself in the eyes of the media." Téa took another step forward, her fist clinched hard.
"You think so, do you?" His smirk only deepened. "It is rather easy to twist something around, especially when a tabloid or two is involved, making you out to be quite the villainess in this whole thing." He patted the spot next to him, wanting her to sit down, not really caring if her clothing was wet. Gardner reluctantly made her way over to him and sat down as close to the edge of the bed as possible. "Oh, I can imagine how Yugi will take this news, especially when I tell him to his face exactly what it was like with you here in my bed. I will recount every sordid dirty detail. How you felt, every taste and sound you made."
"He has Serenity, he won't care." She glanced down at the sheet she was sitting on.
"That doesn't matter, Gardner. Wheeler's ridiculous sister is just a passing fling that could possibly end, but you, oh no. You'll still be there after Yugi's girls all come and go." Her eyes closed in what appeared to him to be despair which pushed him further into making her do what he wanted. "You have that oh so permanent place beside him as his supportive never changing friend." Seto said reaching over and trailing his fingers over her face. "You are his best buddy, having that strong bond one would say. You are the one he trusts the most and you just went behind his back and fucked his enemy, completely enjoying it. I don't think he'd take too kindly to that, do you?"
"This is your fault!" Téa hissed at him, she tried to get up to get away from him but his hands gripped her tightly and held her down. She now tried to shift herself out of that hold. "You wouldn't leave me alone!"
He cupped her face and turned her head, making her face him. "I didn't force you. I only used words, Gardner. You did this all on your own, you could have said no again and again, sure I might not have taken no for an answer and still pursued you. At least you would have been able to tell them that you refused…but no, you said yes, many times might I add."
This was all so surreal, it wasn't possible. It was just a bad dream. She couldn't let anyone find out about this, they would all hate her. Yugi would hate her. She would be ruined in the face of the world. She couldn't win this battle, it was impossible. "All right, Kaiba. What will it take for you to keep quiet about this, what do you want from me?"
"Glad you asked." Dropping his hands from her face, he turned around facing her. "It's plain and simple, Gardner. You will come to me when I say and do whatever I want, that is all."
"You make it sound so bad." Téa complained and looked away from him.
Seto shrugged, "It sounds exactly how it is, you could say no and then see your face and name plastered all over the papers and some news programs tomorrow."
"You're terrible. Why does everything have to be your way in this? Don't you care at all how this makes me feel?" She crossed her arms over her breasts, feeling very frustrated.
"I'm selfish, what else can I say?" He reached out and drew her to him, wrapping his arms around her; she didn't resist which was good. "It's not all bad for you, you did like how you felt and I will continue to be very generous and good to you, Gardner."
"Why me? You could have any number of beautiful, classy girls who would jump at your feet instantly. But no, you want plain old me, who you have to blackmail."
Seto did not know the answer to that question. Why did he want her so badly? She didn't have to know that he did not understand his own mind in this particular case.
He smoothed his fingers through her tangled hair, "I like a challenge." Seto tilted his head, peering at the top of her brown head. "And you are far from plain, Gardner, don't sell yourself short."
Téa blinked, that was probably as close to a compliment that she would ever receive from the likes of him, so she wasn't going to question it.
"So Gardner, do we have a deal? For my silence on this matter, you will in turn give me whatever I desire any and every time I say without being difficult about it."
Not being able to bear it if anyone found out about this, her life would be over and her whole world would crash down around her. There really was nothing left she could do. "I don't have much of a choice now, do I? So fine, have it your way."
Téa groaned and opened her eyes. She twisted in her chair and stood up approaching her sliding glass door that would lead out on the balcony. She opened that door and stepped out onto it. Trying to keep her dirty affairs a secret had been hard but she managed not to let out a single clue as to who she was seeing behind her friends' back. She sure life couldn't get any worse than this. She had been so wrong, Yugi had been the one to find out just who she was seeing…
Hanging her sweater on the back of the chair, she looked over and saw Yugi sitting on the floor and she shrieked having been startled. "Geeze Yugi, you scared me to death. What are you doing?"
He slowly stood up and walked closer to her, the kitchen table was between himself and Téa. Clearing his throat, Yugi said, "Téa? Is there something you feel you should tell me?" His voice was flat and devoid of emotion as he stared at the wood flooring.
Téa really hated keeping things from him, but it was best that he did not know about her flings with Se—Kaiba. There was no point in him knowing, perhaps he would think of her as a traitor and she just couldn't stand that. "No, not really."
'Please don't lie to me, Téa,' he thought to himself. "Are you sure, something that you might be a little ashamed about that you can always come to me if there is a situation going on that is out of your control?"
That made her feel really guilty, but she just couldn't say it. "Heh, no. Everything is going the way it should, perfect even." She plastered on a fake smile. "I think you need more rest, you're talking nonsense." She laughed uncomfortably and turned to head to Yugi's room.
"Perfect." He whispered so lightly that she didn't hear it. Yugi clenched his fist down against his leg. "I saw you."
Téa blinked and turned around slowly, her brows were arched. "What?"
"I saw you!" Yugi saw her jump back a little, "I saw you and Kaiba together, that's not all I saw either! I saw something else, that you can't even remember!" He smiled but it wasn't one of mirth. "Or if you can remember you're doing a very good job of playing pretend."
She pressed her hands to her mouth in shock. "I, uh…Yugi I don't understand what you're talking about. What else did you see!" She demanded.
The mere thought of that was tearing at his heart and he couldn't stand it. "Why would you do such a stupid thing, and with him?" He wasn't sure if he was talking about Kaiba or Yami anymore. It was just way too much for him to handle. "I know exactly what your heart wants, so why would you…" He turned away from her.
"You know?" Téa gasped out in shock.
He nodded, "I know."
"How?"
Yugi hung his head, "I remember that Yami really wanted to talk to you alone, I was locked away in the puzzle and I went into one of his rooms. I'm thinking that most of those rooms are his memories, and this particular room was of the memories of his time of life with you there." He squeezed his eyes shut. "I saw a lot more than I care to think about." He heard a shuffle and rustle of clothing and found Téa to now be sitting on the floor, Indian style. He turned around completely and walked over to her as she stared up at him. Yugi went down on his knees in front of her. "Sure you don't remember what happened to you during those six months, and I didn't see everything. But I know of the struggles of your heart. Just, why haven't you ever told me?"
Téa lowered her eyes to her lap, "I didn't want to make life difficult for you. If you hadn't realized what was going on in front of you…There was just too much at risk if I had said something and you didn't fe—" She didn't want to sit here anymore and listen to this, he was now going to tell her that he didn't care for her like that and it would completely shatter her heart into millions of pieces. "I'm sorry if you feel I destroyed our friendship, Yugi. I didn't really want to keep my involvement with Kaiba a secret, but I thought it would be better if no one knew. I didn't want to explain that it was just a passi—" She felt smooth hands on her face, cupping her cheeks.
Yugi had grabbed her face and tilted it up making her look at him where he shook his head, "Don't talk about him, not like that." He felt his stomach churn and bubble at the idea of her willingly going to Kaiba's bed, nor was he going to tell her what he saw in Yami's memory room with her. If she remembered those key elements it would ruin everything and he was not about to lose. Not to Yami over Téa. This was one instance where he won't win. Sure he felt like a real idiot over the fact that it took him forever to realize that he was in love with Téa, but now that he knew it, he wasn't going to give her up.
"Yugi, what are you doing?"
"Don't see him anymore, Kaiba I mean." Yugi stared at her, watching the emotions traveling over her face.
Téa sighed and turned her head, feeling his hands drop from her face. "There's no reason for me to stop seeing him. He's not at all what people think, and believe it or not, I like him." She moved to get up from the floor when she was actually knocked onto her back. She blinked and was looking up into Yugi's face which appeared very distressed. "Owe, hey, what did you do that for?" He didn't answer her right away and Téa's eyes widened when he rested his forehead against hers.
"Téa, please don't see him anymore. I can't stand it." He closed his eyes. "Kaiba will never love you, not like…not like I do."
"Yugi?" She gasped, "What?"
"I do! I just didn't realize it until recently." He was staring down into her azure eyes. Yugi knew she was going to try and argue it, because it seemed so sudden and she had already been seeing Kaiba, she no doubt would say something to that. But he had discovered the extent of his feelings before he even knew about her and Kaiba. "Téa, I know what I feel and not because you think I just don't want someone else to have you."
She leaned her head against the floor, "why you doing this? It doesn't make any sense." Tears leaked out of the corners of her eyes.
Yugi pressed his hand against the side of her face. "Yes it does, it makes perfect sense." He stroked her cheek with his fingertips and leaned closer. "Téa, you are the one." Hovering over her, he covered her mouth with his…
Smiling to herself, that was one of the memories she had that she liked. Yugi admitting that he loved her. It had been like a dream come true, of course at the time she didn't really believe him and thought it was just a trick because he didn't want her being with Seto anymore. After they had another argument and once things calmed down, and later that night, the proof of his feelings had been known. Téa's cheeks heated and she laughed at herself and her silly reactions.
Téa had then agreed to stop seeing Kaiba as Yugi agreed to stop seeing Serenity and that next morning they had begun the process of their break ups…
Her heart pounded and she stared up at the tall and intimidating face of Seto Kaiba who to her was no longer that intimidating anymore. Sure he could still inflict some kind of light fear but it's not like it was before.
"All right, tell me why you have called me out here, don't you realize how busy I am?" He said in irritation.
Téa rolled her eyes, "Look, this is important. I wouldn't have asked you to meet me here if it wasn't." She saw him cross his arms over his chest. "I think that the arrangement you have with me should end." She said with her head held high. "I don't want to anymore."
'She wants to end it!' Seto felt something inside him shatter at the mention of it. He didn't know why, but he couldn't let her leave him. Finally when she had agreed to be his, everything felt completely different, if not more alive and he wanted nothing more than to hold on to this feeling. If she left him, he didn't know what he would do. Seto Kaiba had never been scared of anything in his entire life, this had been the very first time. "No."
"What, I can't believe you! You'd try and make me still continue—" Téa was rudely interrupted.
"No, Téa. No, you're not ending this." Seto stepped closer to her and she took a step back from him. "I can't let you."
"Why!" She nearly shrieked, "Don't you know that I want be free to be with the one I…" Who was she kidding, he would never understand. Téa turned around, putting her back to him. "You can't make me stay with you, and you no longer have your blackmailing tactics to fall back on since Yugi already knows."
"This is about Yugi again, it's always about him!" Seto yelled, unable to control his emotions. The usually calm and collected exterior was not holding anymore. This girl was able to twist him in so many directions it was ridiculous. Never had anyone, man or woman had this kind of an effect on him.
"I'm sorry." She whispered and took a step. Téa didn't even feel the air around her move as a pair of arms wrapped around her and pulled her back into his hard chest as he seemed to mold himself to her form, and she gasped out loud at the contact.
Seto's eyes closed as he held her so tightly, this was what he wanted, what his heart was crying so desperately for. "Don't you see, don't you know that I can't let you go." He said softly into her ear. Téa's eyes widened. "This, is not easy for me. I want, I need you to stay. Téa, I'm not ordering you, you are free to do what you want. Just know that I love you."
Tears trickled from her eyes, and she leaned her head back against his chest as he nuzzled his face into her neck. He had sounded so different, and a feeling of familiarity surrounded her heart and soul. Seto Kaiba was a young man who had billions, owned a multinational corporation, yet when it came down to it, that was nothing. He never had a real family, never any kindness or love except from a sweet younger brother. He was all he had in the world. All he has known was coldness and cruelty, no wonder he turned out the way he did. Téa knew what she had to do, she would put her wants and desires on hold and give Seto exactly what he needed.
Yugi was waiting for her in the park and was sitting at the fountain as he saw her come walking up. She was staring at the ground. "Téa?"
She looked up to find Yugi standing there, hopefully he would understand her decision. "Yugi, there's something serious we need to talk about." She even sounded serious.
"Oh this can't be good." He mumbled.
"That depends on how you look at it." Téa approached Yugi and sat down, where he sat beside her. She turned a little towards him. "Yugi, I'm sorry, but this isn't the right time for us."
He felt his heart fall into his feet, "What do you mean?"
Closing her eyes for a moment and taking a deep breath, she turned and looked at him, taking his hands in hers. "Yugi, I can't drop Kaiba, not now."
His eyes narrowed slightly, "Why not, I thought we had an understanding?"
"We did, but I can't leave him now." Téa sighed and faced forward for a moment, where she couldn't help but smile. "Yugi, my feelings for you won't change, but for now I will stay with the one who needs me the most." She turned in Yugi's direction again. "You have Yugi, you have always been surrounded by good and wonderful things, family and friends who love, adore and care for you." She lowered her eyes to her thighs. "Kaiba's never had any of that. He doesn't know warmth or kindness, and I'm going to give that to him for as long as he needs me."
Yugi stared at Téa's hands. She always did go towards those who needed her the most. It was her heart speaking to her on what she needed to do. She would do the unselfish thing and put all she wanted up on a shelf until it was the right thing to do. Her heart was one of the things Yugi loved most about her. True it was heartbreaking that he couldn't be with her right now and he perhaps if he had realized it a little bit sooner this wouldn't have been happening. He really wanted to be with Téa but now was not that time.
Téa stood up from the fountain bench and smiled down at Yugi still sitting there. "I have to go, he's waiting for me."
She turned to walk away when Yugi jumped up onto the fountain rim and grabbed her arm, pulling her back to him where he kissed her hard, deeply and with a silent promise. Lifting his mouth from hers, he noticed her cheeks were flushed and she slowly opened her eyes.
She stepped back from him with a longing there in her eyes, Téa tilted her head down towards the ground and turned from him and walking away. She didn't get very far when she heard him calling her name and she spun around. He was still standing on the fountain rim with a large smile on his face.
"Téa, just because you're staying with Kaiba, doesn't mean I've giving up!" He shouted to her. "Now that I know what's in my heart and what's in yours, it's just proof that we are meant to be. I promise you that the day will come soon and then we'll be together."
Téa smiled and couldn't help her laugh, "I can hardly wait, Yugi!" She smiled and turned and continued to walk away…
That all happened about three weeks ago, and it was now summer vacation. Two weeks of nothing but rest, relaxation and hanging out with friends. Téa walked back into her room and locked the sliding glass door. She wasn't worried about not remembering what happened to her during her six month absence, it wasn't that important anymore. What was important was the here and now and she was going to have so much fun this vacation and then school would start up again. Téa hoped that nothing outrageously weird was going to happen, and it was going to be a normal school year with no card duels that bring threats upon humanity, yes she could only hope…
