A few weeks ago, a friend of mine was reading Matchmaker. She said it was funny and all, but she’s been saying since then I can’t write a serious fanfic if I tried.
No, I didn’t point out Insomnia. I hated that; it was all whinging, little action and Tidus x Yuna.
Combine that challenge with a dream I had about FMA and you get this fic.
Like I predicted, it’s named after a song.
Kgojol: More like you were too lazy…
Yashi: Duh, of course!
Me: Wow, what great muses I have!
DISCLAIMER: I, SexySpoonsWillRuleUsAll, do not own Fullmetal Alchemist. If I did, spoons would play a very, very important role and Envy would be obsessed with them.

NOTHING I WON’T GIVE
CHAPTER ONE
--
I hate the rain.
Every time my life is going to be thrown through a vicious maelstrom of pain, it rains. Not the light, gentle rain you can easily ignore, but the heavy, drench-in-an-instant downpour.
When he left, it was raining. I can hardly remember it, but that was when everything went wrong.
At first, it was fine. The four of us we inseparable. Even if that bastard wasn’t around, Mum sure made up for it, even becoming like a second mother for Winry.
Then, there was the accident. I’ve never seen it rain harder.
We left after that. Our home town is far too painful. Everywhere I look, I see her face, memories of what we had and lost. I was willing to give everything just to see her smile again, but there’s always the harshness of reality. Nothing can resurrect the dead.
The three of us went to Central, all with different motives. I just wanted to leave and Al didn’t want to be alone. Envy wanted to find our father (“Let’s put that damn bastard in his place!”).
Our plan was perfect, if a bit lacking. We’d use the money Mum left us to rent an apartment and go to school here and learn more about our dad’s obsession – alchemy. And then, we would regain what we lost. Screw details, we needed something to hope for.
As it turns out, no plan is fool proof. Things don’t always go according to plan – especially in life… and love.
--
Ed yawned, stretching his arms out. Placing his hands behind his golden head, he flashed a toothy grin to his older brother. Envy rolled his violet eyes and mouthed “spock” in return.
The Elric brothers had finally gotten used to the huge city of Central. They had found an apartment several blocks from a finishing school with, to Ed’s great relief and joy, one of the largest libraries in the city. The three were currently amongst the group of sixty-nine hopefuls taking the entrance exam.
Subtly scanning the room, Ed’s eyes fell upon his younger brother’s sandy-blonde head. Alphonse was writing swiftly, almost as if he were afraid the answer to the question would disappear from his mind. Ed couldn’t help but smile – Al was probably the most mature person in this school, despite his streaks of naivety.
Envy, on the other hand, was Al’s opposite. Rebellious, cocky, selfish and wild – Envy was the definition of punk. Often Ed had trouble finding redeeming factors about his elder half-brother, but Envy definitely was protective of his younger brothers despite what the elder said.
Ed, being the middle child, was a mixture of the eldest and youngest. He too was often rebellious and only truly cared for his family and the Rockbells. However, he couldn’t help but feel a twitch of sorrow and guilt when someone came towards him, desperate for help. Ed was also lazy, though not to the extent of Envy, extremely confident and responsible when it came to their lives. Ed’s only truly unique traits were his extremely short-temper and his genius, which surpassed both of his brothers.
A movement disturbed Ed from his thoughts. Looking up, he noticed the school’s principal, Bradley, was on his feet, smiling. His uncovered eye was closed and his tanned hands clasped behind his back.
“Your time is up. Please leave your examination papers where they are. We will get back to you within a week,” Bradley announced. Several people groaned loudly and others protested that they weren’t done. Bradley merely smiled.
Obeying his future principal’s commands, Ed stood, adjusting his red trench-coat as he strode confidently from the room. He was going to be accepted into this school. He needed to.
Envy and Al soon caught up to him. The brothers walked in silence, none knowing what to say.
“Did you two find the exam easy?” Al asked reluctantly as they left the military school’s grounds.
“Fairly easy, especially the science questions,” Ed replied. “Honestly… asking what would happen if you mixed sodium and chloride!”
“Brother, you need to remember not everyone knows that,” Al sighed, though he himself had thought the question a bit too easy. “What about you, Envy?”
“Booooring,” Envy announced.
“Well, at least you didn’t fall asleep this time,” Ed muttered.
“And why is it the same exam for any person? I’m four friggin’ years older than Shrimpy, and we’ve gotta take the same test. What a messed up school,” Envy added, glaring at Ed.
“Probably because you’re an idiot, Palm-tree.”
“Respect your elders, shrimp.”
“DAMMIT I AM NOT SMALL ENVY YOU BASTARD!” Ed bellowed. Sighing, Al held his shorter brother back.
Grinning victoriously, Envy raced off ahead.
“HEY! DON’T THINK YOU’RE GETTING AWAY!” Ed yelled, sprinting after Envy. Al sighed, shaking his head, before running after both of them.
--
I never told them, but I always knew.
Father would trust me with knowledge that could lead to pandemonium. There is a reason why it is forbidden.
And I knew.
I knew everything.
I’m sorry.
Everything that has happened is my fault.
The sin is mine to carry.
I can still fix everything.
Sorry… Al… Envy…
I’m to blame.
--
Some how, Al had managed to keep Ed and Envy from tearing each other apart. Looking back, Ed realised they had both been manipulated. Al wasn’t as innocent as he seemed.
“Ed, Envy, what do you want for dinner?” Al asked, rummaging through the cupboards.
“McDonald’s,” Envy replied immediately. Al rolled his eyes.
“I agree!”
“You two are like little kids…” Al muttered.
“And you’re like a mother,” Envy sneered.
Al pouted.
“C’mon Al, we just took a damn exam! Give us some luxury!” Ed replied, grinning.
“But we don’t know the results yet…”
“I do,” Ed replied. “We all passed. Everyone else looked like complete idiots.”
“Shrimpy’s got a point. Did you see the little kid with the mega-mullet?” Envy asked, laughing.
“Yeah! He was practically crying!” Ed agreed, trying to suppress his own laughter.
“You two are so mean…”
“C’mon Al, we mock because we care,” Ed and Envy said, in perfect sync.
Al sighed again, shaking his head.
“Fine, we’ll get McDonald’s,” Al submitted, turning away in defeat. He walked into his bedroom to get their money. He didn’t trust Envy with it and Ed would loose it.
“And we’ll be able to get it so much more when we get our scholarships. They PAY us to go to school!” Ed said, grinning widely.
Envy ruffled Ed’s loose hair playfully. “It’s a seriously messed up world, Edo! People will do anything for sexy, intelligent guys like us.”
“Stop flirting with Ed, Envy! Incest is even more illegal here,” Al called from his bedroom.
“SHUT UP ALPHONSE!”
Laughing, Al returned to the room, wallet in hand.
“So, then, let’s go.”
“TO McDONALD’S!” Envy cried dramatically, pulling his black jeans up higher as he sped off.
“Dammit, we’re gonna have to start monitoring his sugar intake again,” Ed said sarcastically.
A bus trip later, the Elrics were eating at a table in a crowded McDonald’s. Envy was playing with the stuffed dog he got with his Happy Meal, Al sipping his coke and Ed scoffing the chips of his large Big Mac meal.
“Ed, you should slow down… you’re gonna choke,” Al sighed.
“And watching you eat is enough to turn anyone anorexic,” Envy added.
“Mmfh. Too late for you, Palm-tree,” Ed replied, swallowing. Envy seethed. Al was amazed Envy didn’t punch or kick Ed. The eldest Elric was extremely sensitive about his appearance. Envy wore violet contacts and dyed his hair to stop himself from looking like a pale, bony Ed.
“Ed, do you have work this week?” Al asked, quickly changing the subject.
“Yeah, in two days. Wanna come with?” Ed replied, knowing how much Al loved spending time with Nina, the young girl Ed baby-sat frequently. Her father, Shou Tucker, was a renowned zoologist.
“Of course!”
Envy rolled his eyes slightly. He was yet to get a job and hated the idea of being a slave, picking up after other people, so it wasn’t bound to happen soon. They only managed to maintain their living with the money their Mother left them, though that money was quickly drying up. Ed’s job didn’t pay well enough, though it helped slightly.
“What are you going to do?” Ed asked Envy, recognising the tiny glint of pain in his older brother’s eyes.
“I ‘unno… probably look for some minimal slave labour,” Envy shrugged.
Ed smiled sadly. It was difficult… and it hurt a lot, seeing his brothers suffer like this. However, they had decided one thing when they left home.
The Elrics always stick together.
--
Oh… I should probably explain why the hell there’s a Mcdonald’s in Central.
Um… in that dream I had, Envy was eating a Happy Meal and the mental image I had was so cute I couldn’t deny my strange fangirl-side its hidden desire. Keep in mind it is AU anyways.
Anyways, thanks for reading!
