September 22nd, 9:39 am eastern standard time. Location: Scarsdale Community Zoo.
Roger Davis, seven years old, was pulling his friend, Mark Cohen, five years old, into the zoo, seeing as Mark was really reluctant to go.
Flashback
“But there's big scawy cats!”
Mark cried.
“C'mon Mark! I'll protect you!” Roger re assured him, giving him a big, toothy grin and a thumbs up.
“You sure?” Mark sniffed.
Roger nodded and rested his arm around the smaller child's shoulders, Mark giving a small smile in return.
End Flashback
That was the previous night. Mark had gotten nervous on the ride over and was almost in tears by the time they got to the zoo.
“C'mon Marky, everything will be fine! We can go get the giraffe's!” Roger said, trying to cheer Mark up.
“I dun wanna!” Mark pouted, blue eyes slowly filling with tears.
“Mark, c'mon. We won't go see any of the big lions or tigers, k?” Roger asked, hopefully succeeding in getting his friend to agree.
Mark looked up at Roger and wiped his eyes.
“Awright, but you pwomise no wions or tigews?” Mark sniffed.
“I promise.” Roger smiled and took his hand.
The two walked into the zoo, their fathers following behind them.
While walking through the zoo, Roger rudely pointed out that a woman was wearing a very ugly pink and green body suit. This caused Mark to laugh and feel better.
The saw llamas, horses, goats, and sheep. As they continued on their way through the park, they got to the large cats area, which was the only way to get to the giraffe's and other animals, which both Roger and Mark wanted to see badly.
Roger grabbed Mark's hand before saying, “Mark, to get to the giraffe's you'll have to close your eyes and I'll help you get there within forty steps, k?”
“Why fowty?” Mark asked.
“I don't know I made it up.” That made Mark laughed, but then he shrugged, gave Roger's his hand and let Roger lead him past the lions and tigers.
“Kay Mark, you can open your eyes.”
Blue eyes stared into green. “Let's go see those giraffes!”
Mark smiled as the reached the giraffe area. Roger looked down at Mark and smiled. He always loved to put a smile on Mark's face, and he always will.
Once they were done with zoo and they were getting ready to go, Roger pleaded his dad if he could run into the gift shop and buy something for Mark. His dad agreed and Roger smiled as his dad handed him money and he ran in.
Glancing around the shop, Roger found the perfect gift for Mark. He ran over grabbed it and then ran to the cash register. The cashier placed it in a bag and smiled at Roger as he ran out of the shop.
Roger decided to wait till they got into the car to give Mark his gift.
“What's this?” Mark asked.
“A present for you!”
“A pwesent for me? Why?”
“Because you're my best friend of course!” Roger exclaimed, ruffling Mark's hair slightly.
Mark giggled and took the gift out of his bag. He squealed slightly and hugged Roger.
“Tank you, tank you!”
“You're welcome!”
Mark smiled at his new gift and would keep it always.
His blue giraffe from Roger.
