There are nights when I feel old beyond my years, bedraggled and brought down with no sense of hope in sight. Tonight's one of those nights, and I try not to reflect too much as I take another gulp of tequila and my partner swallows more rum. We understand each other most of the time, and words aren't something we have a need for.

His gold earring jangles as he looks into my eyes. "One of those nights, aye?"

"Aye," I mutter in agreement between drink.

"Don't worry, Faith," Jack says, his gold tooth flashing. "We'll get through this together." His hand reaches for mine, but I move it away in time.

He's had too much tonight, but I don't comment on that. I just down the rest of my tequila and toss the bottle aside as he throws away his rum bottle. I grab us each another of our favorite poisons and pass one to him. He remains silent as he uncaps his bottle and downs more rum, and I know he's taken the hint. There won't be any more talk tonight, just comfortable silence and alcohol to dim the pain. And that's just the way I like it.
