The Lonely God's Companion
Author:
unworthyflower or Natalie
Summary: (Tiny fic. Character death/angst) It had been a busy day collecting souls…

A/N: Huge credit to Markus Zusack's The Book Thief for inspiration. Comments/constructive criticism all welcome!

When I arrive I can see she is already fading, the pink glow surrounding her diffuses as her breath become slower, shallower. Yet her soul, glowing gold shines brighter than ever.

It had been a busy day collecting souls, all electric blue. Lives ended by one fatal touch of the detached robotic creatures which roamed the land.

So much darkness all around. Only the sun colours the sky red, mirroring the massacre beneath.

The Lonely God is there once again. I know him far too well. He clutches her in his arms. Face tense with aguish as he breathes her name over and over. I hesitate, perhaps I am early. Her eyes are searching the contours of his face and I can sense her determination to hold on. No, her soul is singing, calling to me, it is time.

Suddenly, he looks up at me, and I am shocked when recognition registers on his face. Foolish me, to think that in all my travels I had observed him, but him never me. Of course he has seen me, after all I am often described as his only companion.

He shakes his head at me, as if warning me from moving any closer. I shuffle nervously as he looks back down at her face and cradles her ever closer. He whispers desperately in her ear as she breathes in, then out, and then nothing.

An eternity passes. Closing his eyes, he manages a nod, a reluctant consent as tears emerge. I creep closer. Slowly I pry her glowing soul from his arms.

Reverently, vigilantly I carry her soul. The Lonely God's companion, the Bad Wolf, the valiant child, the brave girl who fought in battle and won. Back to the stars in the sky, where she belongs.

The End
