Life was unfair. If Sofia Curtis had learned anything in the past thirty-six years it was that life was incredibly unfair.
Her mother had always taught her to roll with the punches. It was ironic that the only advice her mother would ever give her, would be what kept her sane all those years.
It started when her father left. He started a line of men who would walk in and out of her life. Always leaving a mark. A new lesson. Woman weren't any better. It seemed like they were always threatened by her. Watching her like a hawk. So she kept to herself. Finished high school with top honors, got into the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, something her mother hated. She then joined the force in Las Vegas, but was then pulled into CSI. Somewhere between school and the force she had met him. He would define her life forever. An affair that ruined his marriage but shadowed her life forever. It's what drove her to Vegas in the first place. Now here she was forced to face the affair, face him. At her new job no less.
“Sofia?” he said softly.
She was surprised that he even recognized he. (She barely had) It had been sixteen years since she'd last seen him. Sixteen years since she'd left Texas. Left the man she loved.
'If you look up Irony in the dictionary, my face will be there,' she thought bitterly.
She'd been more attracted to the fact that he kept her safe and sheltered. Things that she'd always craved. Ecklie had given her that too until she'd sided with Gill. Apparently the genius of Gill Grissom couldn't help her. Just like Ecklie, Sid would betray her too.
'She caught us. He denied it. I begged him to stay with me. He just wanted to keep his family together. All of sudden he'd turned me into the other woman. The other woman who broke up my own family, and I hated him for it.'
It was her first day as a CSI in New York city and here he was. Examining a body in the morgue. A cruel joke was more like it. All the men in her life screw her over, while all the woman resent her.
Ecklie, Catherine, Gill, Sara, Dad, and of course Sid. They all put road blocks up in her life. Never giving her a chance to move on.
'I leave Vegas to start over, and run straight into the past.'
“Sofia?”
“Hey Sid.”
'He's changed so much and yet I can still see the man I fell for. His charm, smile, big blue eyes. They still scream young, smart and sexy. Sid. I can remember the kisses, soft skin, his addicting sent. The sunrise peeking over his head while he sleeps.'
“How are you? You look amazing,” he says
“I'm fine.”
'So not fine.'
“Hey Sid. What do have for me?” asks a voice behind me. It's Stella Bonasera's. I just met her upstairs.
“Oh Stella just give me a second,” Sid says, breaking eye contact with Sofia.
“Hey how's your first day going?” she asks her.
“Great. Just perfect.”
“You know we're all going out tonight. You should come too.” she says with a warm smile. A smile that shows compassion and friendship. Something Sofia has never had before. She has to bite her lip from quivering.
“Yeah... I'd like that.” she says.
Maybe New York wont be so bad after all.
The End
