Given the situation, it had been the right thing to do. The acceptable thing - in his eyes anyway. It was the only way to achieve the power necessary to kill Itachi, therefore it was required of him.
In a ninja's world, those who violate the rules and fail to follow orders are lower than garbage.
Betrayal.
So what.
Sasuke dropped his head, averting his eyes from the familiar sight of Konoha. Multi-leveled buildings, signs, and people, a mess of wood and metal and flesh and bone. Buildings constructed in twisted lines leading indeterminably into others, the roads strewn with people even now. Tomorrow, he would be an enemy of every one of them, his name would be on their lips, he would be the talk of the town.
"Uchiha Sasuke, did you hear? He left Konoha, and the Hokage has declared him a missing nin."
"Uchiha? He was Kakashi's, right?"
"Yeah, they say he's gone to Sound, and that he's betrayed Konoha. Pity, but what can you do? A lot of people will probably do after him, I mean, he was well-known and everything, but I won't be one of them. I wouldn't go after some traitorous bastard even if you paid me, he can die for all I care. All traitors should. He betrayed us, betrayed Konoha itself - you can't forgive a sin like that."
"Even if you could though, who would? For him to betray Konoha for some other village, no one could forgive that. Nobody knows why he left I bet - if they do they're keeping it quiet - but does it matter? He betrayed all of us, and like you said, you can't forgive a sin like that."
"Stupid bastard…"
"Traitor."
So what.
It didn't matter he didn't care that he had betrayed the people of Konoha, Konoha itself. It had been the only thing to do to attain power. He could not get it sitting around the village hidden in the leaves, so he was forced to go to Orochimaru, and the only way to do that was to leave. To betray. To become a missing-nin and be hated because of it. The training sessions he put himself through were not enough, would never give him the power he needed, so he was required to take this course of action, foretold by one Orochimaru himself.
The words were distant and cloaked in a shadowy fog that made him think them only a dream, but they were present. Diluted and unclear, they were present.
When a heart is sufficiently focused and ruthless in its desires, then, for good or evil, the end will justify any means. Sasuke has just such a heart… the heart of an avenger.
An avenger.
A day will come when he will seek me out, hungry for power!
Power by any means. Betrayal, murder, alienation, anything and everything… Thirty pieces of silver or Itachi's death, it didn't matter. So so what.
Sasuke turned at last, turning his back on Konoha for the last time. He didn't glance back, but walked calmly away through the trees, losing the village to sight as he pushed his thoughts out of his head and left them lying on the ground like dead fish.
Like Judas Sasuke betrayed, but unlike Judas he did not regret.
