Kelsey Davenport looked out of her window at the gray clouds that hung overhead. She was dreading the moment that was to come. She was about to have to bury her fiancée. As she looked at the ring on her finger, a twinge of pain came to her eyes. She would never marry the man she loved. He was taken from her needlessly and without warning. She walked to her closet and got her dress out. Like a robot, she got dressed.
“This is the last thing I want to do” she muttered to herself.
She found her shoes and made her way to the front of their apartment. Curtis had asked Kelsey to move in with him about 3 months ago. She wasn’t sure what to expect but reluctantly, she did it. There was not one moment of regret in her life. That was until Vic Mackey came to get her at the hospital to tell her of Curtis’s death. Kelsey would never forget that day. It was the day her world stopped turning. It was the day she thought she’d never be able to go home or ever be able to live in their apartment together. It was the day some coward murdered Curtis.
Kelsey was at work when Vic came to get her. She was at the hospital, tending to a patient when one of the other nurses walked up behind her with a grim look on her face.
”You need to go to the nurse’s desk.”
“Maria, I am with a patient. Please take a message.”
”Kelsey, you need to go see the officer.” Maria motioned over her shoulder and Kelsey saw Vic and Shane Vendrell, two of Curtis’s co-workers.
Kelsey got up and Maria took over. As she walked to the two men, she got a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach.
”Guys? What’s wrong?” Kelsey started to choke up.
“I don’t know how to tell you this, but, Oh God, there’s been an um, accident.” Vic was choking on his words as he spoke.
Kelsey knew this wasn’t good. She began to break down. Shane saw that she was about to fall and stood behind her, holding her up as the tears began to flow from her eyes.
“What happened? Dear God, what happened? Where’s Curtis? What’s wrong?”
Shane spoke up. “Kelsey, there is no easy way to say this. Curtis was killed earlier tonight. He was waiting on us to meet before we went out on assignment and someone planted a bomb in his car. He died at the scene.”
Kelsey began to sob. She began to shake. Then she blacked out. That was all she remembered until she woke up in the on call room with Vic and Shane and Vic’s ex-wife Corrine who also worked in the same hospital as Kelsey.
Shaking herself out of her flashback, Kelsey looked up and saw Vic standing at the door, about to knock. She slipped on her other shoe and walked to the door.
”Vic, come in, please.” Kelsey had known Vic for about as long as she and Curtis had been engaged. Curtis preferred to keep his personal life and work life separate. But Vic had been over to eat dinner with them a time or two as Shane and his wife Maura had been.
”Kelsey, I know better than to ask how you’re doing. So I won’t” he said as he reached for Kelsey and gave her a warm hug.
“I’m managing one day at a time. I’ve given our landlord notice. I’m moving out. I can’t stand to be in the apartment that…” and she stopped herself as she fell to the floor and the tears began to flow freely. “I just want to know why. Why was Curtis taken from me? He did NOTHING WRONG!” She found herself yelling as well as crying.
Vic just stood there. He had a sympathetic look on his face, but words would not come to him to console her. Instead, he sat down next to Kelsey and held her while she cried.
“I promise you. We will find out who did this. We will punish them. I will punish them. You have my word on that.” Vic had kept his word in the past and Kelsey had no reason to distrust him now. He got up and helped her up. Together, they walked out the door to Curtis’s funeral.
