When Roxas read, he was different.

He sat up straighter, no longer in his thoughtful slouch. His hood was down, messy blond hair and blue eyes out in the open. But, most notably, Roxas held the faintest hint of expression on his face. His eyes contained the barest spark of interest for the words in each book.

Axel liked it when Roxas read, because at those times, Roxas tended to not dismiss his company. While Roxas was absorbed in whatever he happened to be perusing, Axel could sit close to him, shoulders touching. Sometimes, if Roxas was in the mood, Axel could even hold Roxas in his arms while the boy silently read.

Once in a while Axel would bring a hand to play with the strands of hair at the base of Roxas’ neck. In reply, Roxas would calmly move the hand away, and return to his reading. If Axel ever chose to continue the touches, the blond would turn to face him with a flat expression. Axel would cease in his actions, but smile playfully, and Roxas would return to his book.

One day, when Axel felt rather daring, he gently tapped Roxas on his shoulder. Roxas turned around slowly, to once more give Axel some semblance of attention. Axel merely grinned in return, and placed a light kiss to the corner of Roxas’ mouth.

Roxas made no reaction to the display of affection, a fact Axel noted wryly. But when he pulled away, Roxas did not turn away, and was regarding Axel with the same gentle recognition he gave his books.

It wasn’t much, but in Roxas’ stare, Axel felt as if he existed just a bit more than usual.
