I was surprised to find the flowers on my bed last night, just like I was surprised to find everything else that had been turning up there recently. I should have just been used to it by now, but, it continued to puzzle me. Was some pervert sneaking into my room every night; watching me as I slept? Did I have a secret admirer? That was ridiculous!
I shook my head, trying to clear it, as I walked out to the kitchen to find a vase for the flowers. Here I was, stuck in the middle of a real crisis, the Sohma family to be exact, and I was starting to think about secret admirers; it was probably only one of my friends, trying to cheer me up or something. It could, for example be Uo or Hana-chan, or maybe yuki or-
“Kyo!” I squeaked; I had been so caught up in thought I hadn’t realized he was already in the kitchen, and had run right into him. Oh I am so stupid! “So sorry.” I continued in a whisper, realizing I might just wake up Yuki or Shigure screaming like that.
“Why are you back down?” Kyo asked, quickly stepping away as to not accidentally turn into a cat, very smart; I was always acting like some kind of klutz around him. “I did just send you up because you were in one of your cleaning things again, and you were not going to get any sleep.”
“Water.” I answered, holding up the bouquet of flowers for inspection. “And a vase too, or a cup or something.” I added hurriedly, because just getting water was ridicules and I wanted to clarify.
Was that a flash of understanding and annoyance, or was I simply hallucinating? “Yeah,” Kyo replied apologetically; turning, he rummaged through a cupboard. “Here you go.” He continued a minute or so later, offering an appropriate vase filled with water. “Go catch some Zs.”
“Yeah.” I turned to go, offering him one last thankful smile; changing my mind shortly there after I spun around again, almost losing the flowers and all the water all over the floor. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about these flowers would you?”
I had obviously caught him off guard. “Why would I know anything about them?” Kyo asked, his eyes flitting between the flowers and me.
“No reason.” I offered him one last departing smile, and turned around again, planning on finally going to bed.
“Tohru.” I blinked and Kyo was in front of me, his hands on my upper arm. “It was me.” He choked out. What? “I put the flowers there, and everything else…” Kyo trailed off, his hand rubbing nervously at the back of his neck, his head down; extra blood flushing his cheeks.
“Why?” Sure, I had considered it, but this seemed so much more then a friend… My head reeled.
“Because.” Kyo’s eyes lifted to meet mine, and my breath caught in my throat, the red consuming my soul. “I love you.” I stopped breathing.
I blinked, slowly, and he was close, so very close, I could smell him; his face was inches from mine; finally, my breath was released. “I love you too.” The four small words came out in a single breath, and were almost unintelligible, even to my own ears, but he understood.
Closing the space between us, his lips touched mine; brushed lightly across them, and then, they were gone.
“The single woman in all the world.” Kyo breathed, still only centimeters away from me; all I could do was let loose a long sigh.
For a long few minutes I was speechless, trying to think of what to say; this was so unexpected. I loved him, had loved him, and would love him, no matter what happened. What was there for silly old me to say? “I choose you Kyo Sohma,” and reaching up, I grabbed two fistfuls of his shirtfront and pulled him down to face me eye to eye. “Only you; as you are.” I finished, and without further ado, and without any more pomp and ceremony; no more pretty or dramatic words, I kissed him.
I kissed him with every inch of my being; pushing myself up and into him, my arms staying clenched between us; his arms slowly moving up and around me, to hold me like I had always imagined he would.
