She sat at that table, surrounded by the best of the Ootori family, remembering the reason to why she was there; wearing that elegant silk maroon night dress, eating from the finest silverware, rather than in her dorm studying for the finals that were coming up within the next few weeks for her law degree. She reached for the delicate crystal glass filled midway with a fine red wine from Italy and took a small sip, looking at the one person that brought her there.

Kyouya Ootori.

Tonight was the night in which that young man was to find out his fate. To find out if all the hard work had paid off, that his father would pick him to be the heir of the Ootori Group and nearly all of its assets. Tonight was the night that would either break or make that man.

“ Haruhi,” She raised an eyebrow, completely bemused at the sudden phone call from the Shadow King. “ I need to ask you to do a favor…”

“ I guess this favor is worth waking me up at two in the morning…?” She swore she heard him chuckle on the other line.

“ I like you to accompany as my partner to a dinner party at my family’s estate.” Haruhi sat up in her bed.

“ Why?”

“ Because I need a dinner party…” He paused. “ … date for this… dinner. You’re the only person I know who I would rather… share my moment of victory, that is a woman, than some clueless heiress that my mother has been pushing on me for the past two weeks.”

“ Eh…” Haruhi raked a hand through her brown, mid length, hair. She sighed, trying to decide on her actions. “ I don’t have anything to wear for an occasion as that.”

“ I’ll provide everything.” Haruhi placed a hand on her forehead, feeling a slight headache coming along. “ It’ll be at your door step tomorrow, I’ll pick you up that night.” The line went dead.

Her earlobe felt as if someone attached five pound weights, the three karat tear drop shaped diamond earrings accented her necklace that was studded with the same stones, but that didn’t mean nothing to her. She shifted slightly in her chair and tucked a few lose strands of hair behind her ear, the rest the hair was styled into a lose bun. When Kyouya said that he would provide everything, he literally meant that. Prior to his arrival she was whisked away to a salon to be made up for this event.

Not that she did mind, but this was a bit too much.

When he arrived, he had in his hand a bouquet of roses standing in front of the Mercedes Benz in his neatly tailored three-piece suit. Haruhi had seen him dress in this attire on several occasions, but she swore that she gasped when she saw that young man standing here. His usual expression on his face, as he extended his hand to take her’s. This must have been a very special dinner if he has gone out his way to do all of this. Though, she couldn’t help to worry if he was going to come back to her with the bill.

There was the sound of an object tapped against a crystal glass silencing the room and gathering its attention. The group turned their attention to the older man sitting at the head of the table, his expression strong and firm yet showing a glint of a proud feeling for the atmosphere. Haruhi felt Kyouya shift next to her, and she knew that he was being nervous. Who could blame him? His future was on the line at this very moment. The only thing that came to her was to hold his hand, but it shocked her slightly to feel his hold become stronger, as if he was trying to find a support in her.

“ I wish to thank everyone for coming to this dinner. As you all know, tonight I am to announce the heir of this family’s organization.” The President of the Ootori Group said. “ It was a very touch decision, considering I was blessed to have not one but three sons. But these three young men sitting next to me,” He looked at his three sons that looked back at their father with desperate, yet determined, eyes. “ have proved their worth and are the best sons one could have. But, I can only choose one… and I do this not because I favor one over the other, it is because I am thinking about the well-being and success of this group. So… the son I choose to succeed me when I relinquish my seat is… Kyosuke.”

Haruhi winced in pain as Kyouya squeezed her hand too hard. Kyosuke, from when she was introduced to them early in the evening, was the second son. The eldest son, Kyomaru simply smiled and congratulated his younger brother; it was apparent that the eldest son was glad he wasn’t slammed down with the responsibilities of this organization. Kyosuke smiled and stood up, bowing to the group several times. Kyouya released Haruhi’s hand and clapped with the group, a mask placed on his face in congratulations to his older brother. Haruhi did the same, though, she felt sorry for Kyouya.

One of the business partners at the end of the table stood up and yelled out ‘ A toast! For Ootori Kyosuke! ’, the group raised their glasses and took a sip.

If this had happened to Haruhi, she probably would have got up and excused herself from the table, but this was Kyouya. He rarely showed his anger and frustration in public, and as she predicted Kyouya went along with the rest of the evening despite his urge throw a plate across the room in anger. He congratulated his brother; he even made a short speech praising him and coming up with excuses to justify his brother’s new position. All Haruhi could do was smile it off and pray that Kyouya didn’t snap.

Haruhi had taken off of her heels and began to chase after Kyouya down the extravagant hallway, calling after him, telling him to wait up. After the dinner had ended the group had split off, the women talking about their lives and riches during tea and desert while the men moved into the study to discuss business and politics over a nice glass of brandy. Kyouya had taken this opportunity to ditch the scene and take out his frustration. Haruhi had ran after him.

“ Ootori Kyouya!” Haruhi yelled. The young man stopped and Haruhi finally caught up with him. Placing a hand on his arm she tugged on the jacket. “ Look at me.”

He hesitated at first, but then complied to her request, turning around slowly to face her. She sighed, reaching into her bag to get a tissue. She reached up and wiped away some of the tears; he was crying, probably so frustrated and angry that he ended up shedding tears.

“ I thought, no, I was sure that I had it.” Kyouya strained. “ What did I do? What did I not do? Did they do this to remind me that I was the third son?”

“ I don’t think it was that….” Haruhi handed him the tissue. “ Here.”

“ … Thank you.”

“ You’re stronger than this. If I know one thing about you, I know that you’re stronger than this… you don’t need to inherit a company to be successful.”

“ You don’t understand, Haruhi. You did not grow up the way I did. You don’t understand the way I think.”

“ What is that supposed to mean?” Haruhi frowned. “ You don’t think I had to fight to get where I am?”

“ ….”

“ I received plenty of disappointments in my life, but I over came them.” She, hesitantly, placed a hand on his cheek. “ You have to run into a few bumps in the road in order to get anywhere, Kyouya.”

“ I’ve waited twenty five years for this, Haruhi.” He placed a hand over hers. “ Twenty five years…! I based my life on impressing him but yet, yet I get pushed away for not just the first, but second!”

“ Kyouya….”

“ I just can’t let this pass so easily….” He moved her hand from his cheek.

“ Yes you can.”

“ No… not now.” She didn’t know what prompted her to do this, but she got on her tiptoes and placed a kiss on his cheek.

“ If not for yourself, then for me.” She slightly blushed. “ And everyone else…!” Turning around, she began to walk back to the dinner party until a strong hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him. Her heart was racing and she could hear his race as well as she was pushed against his body, his arms wrapping around her slender frame. Looking up he tilted her head slightly and lowered his lips onto hers.

Haruhi closed her eyes, responding to Kyouya’s kiss. She parted her lips, allowing him to deepen the innocent kiss. Her hands managed to wrap themselves around his body, clinging to the back of his jacket as one of his hands began to take the clips out of her hair, allowing the long, silky, tresses to cascade down her back, his other hand wrapped around her waist. Her shoes and purse were long forgotten.

The kiss became heated as tongues dueled each other, Kyouya now leading Haruhi into one of the many rooms that were on that floor. He broke the kiss and began to nip and lick down her chin, her neck, sucking slightly causing her to gasp. She felt her back against a wooden door, causing her to gasp at the impact against the solid surface.

“ Wait…” Haruhi moaned, as Kyouya nipped her neck, moving his way back up. “ W-wait…” His lips covered hers once more and he slipped his tongue in her mouth, she responded without hesitation. She then broke the kiss, breathing heavily. “ Wait… Kyouya…” She said breathlessly.

Kyouya stared at her before realizing the situation. He moved away quickly, turning around, his hand over his mouth; clearly embarrassed at his actions. Haruhi slowly walked to Kyouya, and slightly hesitated before placing her hand on his arm. He turned around, his cheeks slightly flushed, lips somewhat swollen, breathing heavily.

“ I’m sorry… It’s my fault.” He closed his eyes. “ I acted… without thinking….”

“ … No… no… don’t worry…” Haruhi whispered. Kyouya opened his eyes, looking down at the petite woman in front of him.

“ … I….”

“ Maybe we should… look… at this from…” Haruhi paused, trying to find the right words to say in this akward situation. “ … a different standpoint.”

“ R-r-ight.” Kyouya’s heart was racing, adrenaline running at an all time high. He was shocked at how he could continue to look at Haruhi without faltering. “ … Friends… right?”

“ … Friends.”

They looked at each other, into their eyes, trying to figure out if that’s what they truly meant. If that was really want this was all about; if this was not simply pent up emotions or just a spur of the moment.

Kyouya’s hand reached and caressed her cheek and she leaned against hand, closing her eyes. Could they really go on as friends? Is there something hidden here? Kyouya didn’t know… or more so, at that moment, eh didn’t want to know. He didn’t want to know as he cupped her chin, leaned forward, and kissed her softly.

“ … Just let me have this one moment with you, Haruhi.” He said against her lips. Haruhi never opened her eyes, as she kissed him back, allowing him to open the door and lead her into that guest bedroom.

She would give him that one night; she would make him feel worth it. She would help console him and be his shoulder to cry on. She would take his pain and heal his scars. She would make him forget this night and help him move on…

… Because that’s what she felt was right… Not as a friend; but as a lover.

Even if it was for that one night…
