▪▪▪Prologue
She held her hand inches away from the flame, praying that even the small amount of candlelight would not be seen. Floating unheard down the corridor, she glanced behind her, watching for any sign of movement.
The castle was silent. Nearly midnight, she guessed. Even though time had frozen the dimension into a medieval solitude once again, she had kept a good idea on what hours passed in each day or night that came. Everyone fell to their beds at night and arose every morning, completing each routine until the dark came again. Besides the guards, the hallways and corridors remained empty.
She didn’t dare trying using her power to slip easily through the walls. It was too dangerous—especially if someone were to see. She remained a bit fearful, as it wasn’t the best idea for her to be roaming the castle at this hour. The trouble she’d be in…
Especially since she wasn’t in the best graces. Her mother and father had returned just a few days ago, undoubtedly thanks to her older brother Aragon. He’d gained his power back—as well as his throne—and her parents were furious with her. They had decided to stay, playing babysitter and taking control again and restoring the kingdom to the way it should be.
The way she hated it. She felt like she was suffocating, trapped in this ancient realm of knights and maidens and…dragons… The home and lifestyle she could no longer stand. Where everything was about merrymaking and wars and fairy tales. Where all time stopped and the sun was only a distant shadow in the sky.
For such a small amount of time, the kingdom of Gabriel had had this wonderful opportunity…only to have it ripped away when her brother rose to power and overtook his “rightful” place as prince once more. And with the king and queen, her own parents, residing within the castle, it didn’t look like a bright future for them. In fact, the future wouldn’t come at all—they would remain in this time forever.
Forever was too long.
She looked behind her again, just in case. She doubted…hopefully, she wouldn’t be caught, but she didn’t want to curse her luck either. This would probably be the first and last time she’d wander around so late without the constant eye of her controlling parents. She didn’t have much time to dawdle; she’d get the message through to the girls fast and would do it as discreetly as possible, they’d run out and be back with their intended prize.
The message would be clear. A shiver ran down her spine out of anticipation and yet still a small ounce of fear had wound itself around her, no matter how many times she tried to coax herself that this had…had to work. Her fingertips instinctively brushed against the heavy chain within her dress pocket. Maybe she was paranoid, but it was definitely something she didn’t want to lose.
In a sudden rush of cool wind, the flame on her candle flickered and then went out. She started in surprise and then admitted herself a quiet laugh. The idea that a simple thing like that could scare a ghost like her. Even so, she darted around to see no one behind her and took a deep breath, turning faintly intangible as she passed through the maidens’ quarters.
As soon as she arrived, loud squeals of surprise echoed around her and she earnestly said, “Shhh!” placing a finger to her mouth. The three girls instantly silenced, creeping from the shadows to join her.
The dormitory wasn’t very large since there were only three willing maidens to participate in the waiting process. It was only because of her that they were there at all… But still, their living conditions had been reduced to hardly anything after Prince Aragon’s return—his insistency on having a human bride kept him from choosing one of the girls.
“Princess Dorothea,” Maiden Elizabeth whispered, walking forwards. Her long red hair was down and free from its usual braids and swayed with her every step. “What is wrong?”
“Girls, we have come to our answer at last,” she replied quietly, looking at each of them in turn. She slipped her hand into her pocket and exposed the charm hanging from the chain and each of them gave excited gasps.
Maiden Angel couldn’t help but clap a hand to her pretty face, looking faint. “Our dreams have come true. It is the amulet we shall use to--”
“No!” Dora intervened. “We must not speak of it until we are on the human plane.”
“The human plane?” Elizabeth asked.
“Where our plans will take place. Time will not move forward here, we shall have plenty of time to complete our task.”
“But how do we escape unheard?”
“Ladies, we are ghosts…And ghosts…can do what they please.” She grinned, her eyes changing to faint slithers, letting off a faint glow. “Who’s with me?”
Sam Manson vaguely wondered if it were possible for her best friends to go anywhere without going ga-ga over any girl that happened to pass by. Staring disinterestedly, she leaned up against the counter, waiting for the popcorn and drinks.
“Dude, how come you get more response from the ladies than I do?” Tucker wondered, looking depressed. He glanced jealously over in Danny’s direction.
Danny held up his hands in the non-guilty pose. “Dude,” he said, emphasizing it to tease his best bed. “All I did was wave.”
“Yeah, but they waved first. I usually have to do the waving to make sure I get their attention. You just have to stand there.”
“It’s probably because he doesn’t make himself look like an idiot,” Sam groaned, poking a straw through the cup top. “Unlike you, who persists on jumping up and down like you have to use the restroom.”
Danny snorted, but tried to hide his laughter, turning his face away and staring the opposite direction. Tucker sighed overdramatically. “I love you guys too.”
“Oh, come on, you gotta admit, that was funny,” Danny said, quickly “relieving” the popcorn from Sam’s full hands.
“Right…” He quickly stole a handful and shoved it into his mouth.
“Tucker, the point of getting popcorn is to eat it while you watch the movie,” Sam groaned, reaching for it.
Danny pulled away, looking at her with an incredulous gaze. “No way. Because then you have to hear the movie over the crunching. So you eat it before.”
“No,” she argued. “Not even close. You eat and drink during the middle of the movie so that you don’t have to use the bathroom during the middle.”
“Uh, no, because then your drink is all watery from the melted ice.”
“So don’t get ice.”
“Because then they charge extra.”
“They do not.”
“Hey lovebirds!” Tucker intervened, staring. He wasn’t surprised that they both stopped bickering. “Wanna stop acting like a married couple any time soon?”
They moved a few feet away from each other at his words, staring off in opposite directions. Tucker grinned. “Let’s just get to the movie, shall we? Get the better seats before they’re all taken.”
“He’s right,” Danny agreed, pretending to scratch at his cheek to hide the faint blush that had risen there. “I call middle!”
“Oy,” Sam groaned, watching the two start towards the theatre. She then realized something. “Hey, get back here with that popcorn!”
She casually moved towards the hallway and then raced quickly after them into the dimly lit room, spotting them already in their seats, their feet identically placed on the tops of the row in front of them.
“Scooch over,” she said, shoving Danny’s arm off the rest as she sat down.
“Uh, I was here first,” he replied, glancing over at her.
“Give me that,” she said, distracting him enough and grabbing the bag of popcorn from him. She didn’t realize what he was laughing about until after she tasted it. They’d eaten all the butter off the top. “Fine…” She sighed and pretended to pout.
Danny sat up a little straighter, noticing. At first his eyes were a bit suspicious, perhaps doubting her real feelings, but then his nose twitched and he too sighed. “Want me to go get another cup?”
“No, of course not. I’m the slave around here who just does everything, right?”
He didn’t say anything, looking as if he was scared to say something and then stood up. “I’ll be right back…”
She didn’t move her legs. “Oh, no, sit down, sit down. I’ll get it.”
“Oh, just move,” he said, shoving them gently out of his way.
She waited until he’d passed through the door again before bursting into laughter. Tucker took a drink and shook his head. “Nice…”
“Oh, I’m good.”
“Yeah, and he’s whipped. And clueless.”
“Obiquiet,” she muttered. He was clueless though…
“Why don’t you tell him?”
“Shut it,” she said, already aware of what he was talking about.
“You like him, he likes you.”
“Shut it.”
“Yeah, yeah…I’m just going to sit here and watch you too play married couple for the next three years, aren’t I?”
“Four years?”
“Okay, getting annoying,” she finally snapped, glaring at him.
He took the warning well. “Got it.”
The door to the theatre reopened again as the lights dimmed and before Danny had reached their seats again, they heard him say “ow” quietly.
“Hey, Danny, there’s a handrail there.”
“Yeah, I got that,” he said, sounding hoarse. He handed the cup to Sam, who smiled evily.
“Thank you Danny.”
“Uh huh.”
“Awww, aren’t you two cute?” Tucker swooned.
Danny slid in besides them again, massaging the top half of his stomach. “I didn’t even see that thing.”
“Story of your life Mr., I walked into a pole in the middle of broad daylight yesterday.”
“And, don’t forget,” Sam added. “Mr. as soon as I got the ability to handle fragile glassware, I dropped…what ten beakers?”
“Okay, okay…since when did it become pick on Danny?” he asked, glancing between them both.
“Since you’re so easy,” Sam said.
“Oh, Danny, you’re so easy,” Tucker said, mocking Sam’s voice.
He didn’t duck in time (Danny did) before she smacked his forehead with her hand. “Ow…hey!”
“Shh!” someone said as the previews continued.
“Sorry,” he whispered loudly.
Five minutes into the movie, Tucker heard giggling behind him, turning around to see four girls only four rows back from them. They waved to him, still laughing flirtatiously.
“Dude,” he said, nudging Danny’s arm. When his best friend didn’t respond, he did it again. “Danny.”
“What?” Danny exclaimed, his eyes wide.
“Look, look,” he said, waving back to the four pretty girls. He’d never imagined the day someone would actually flirt back. “Dude, check it out, they’re checking me out.”
“And you have a problem with this why?” Sam made a disgusted noise, vaguely listening.
“I don’t…I should be cool, you’re right,” he agreed. He looked back once more and grinned sheepishly, then started as the girls all got up from their chairs. “Danny, where are they going?” Still, he didn’t answer and he smacked his hand rather harder than necessary.
“What?” he said, very loudly and making the people say “shh” again.
“Where are they going?”
He glanced behind him and watched the girls head down towards the door. “I..I don’t know. Maybe they don’t like the movie.” They waved to him and he waved back, grinning.
One of the girls held her finger out and beckoned them to join. Tucker nearly jumped out of his seat. “Dude, let’s go.”
“Oh, please do,” Sam said, rolling her eyes.
“Me first,” Danny said, grabbing Tucker’s arm and pulling him back. His trademark red beret fell to the ground as he turned intangible and fell back underneath the seats, turning solid again as the connection between them was lost.
“DUDE THAT IS SO NOT FAIR!” he yelled, his voice coming out muffled.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you,” Danny whispered loudly. He turned back to Sam. “Lame movie. Coming?”
“Oh, heaven forbid I ruin your fun,” she replied, glaring indifferently. “No, I’m not going.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”
“Positive?”
“Danny…”
“Okay. I’ll probably…see you later.”
“Hey! Get back here!” Tucker called. “Man, this isn’t funny! I saw them first!”
Danny stifled a laugh, unsure of why exactly he’d left his best bud there. But…first come, first serve, ha ha. Besides that, it was a miracle that any girl really flirted with him in the first place. Why not join them?
The girls had already left the dark room completely and he walked down the narrow hallway, turning around at the faint brush of noise that reached his hearing. As soon as he did, a figure stepped out from the wall and he gasped, a streak of blue coming from his mouth.
He braced himself, about to—
Danny shouted out as something hit his head very hard and fell to the ground, his vision already swimming. As he tried to move, everything darkened. And the last thing he saw was a pair of all too familiar eyes.
And Dora smiled. “Mission complete. Nice job ladies.”

Hee hee. It was a short chapter and kind of rushed but I was trying to get some humor and really just have a good time. As you can see, the plot’s not going to be dark at all, but an all around mixture of romance and humor.
So, if you would, please R&R! Here’s your sneak peek!
Chapter 2: Not So Innocent
“We overshadowed those girls. Funny how it lured you right in, wasn’t it Elizabeth?” Angel said, her fingers working to place a silver necklace around her pale skin.
“Great…” he said sarcastically. This is what he got for leaving his best buds behind…He was never going to trust a girl that flirted with him again.
