To the men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 and to the brave heroes who went back to try and help those who survived.
My hands shake a bit as I look over the wreckage
My heart races as I look over what was
When they fell from the floors above
When their bodies hit the ground with each and every crack
I was there
From the shadows I helped and prayed
From the bottom of my heart I wished all were okay
When the first tower let out a scream
When the dust and debris first flew into the air and into our lungs
I was there
Then I watched as people ran north, south, east, and west
Then I watched as people ran back
When the firemen went into the second tower
When they dug in the disaster to find others
I was there
More people chose their death
More people jumped to escape a firey death
When the second tower let out a roar
When the second tower fell floor by floor
I was there
People screamed and cried
People found themselves with debris in their eyes
When someone needed a hand
When someone cried for help
We were there
From the shadows our souls cried out
From the shadows we did our best to help
When they all coughed
When they all cried
We were there
Our lungs hurt
Our hearts are broken
Not because of something wrong
Not because we were somewhere close
These things hurt
Because we were here
We were there five years ago
We are still healing here today
