A/N: This is a kind of alternate ending to "Meaning" from a 'you' point of view in Cameron's perspective.

Should've Been

You look at him and wonder what is floating in his mind. Wonder what he's still doing here. After a pause you turn away and pack up your laptop and take off your labcoat to hang up.

Then you remember earlier in the afternoon yesterday. The real reason why he asked you out. What you told him. Being in that position, you were caught off guard. He doesn't act this way, something is definitely wrong.

You can't deny that you wanted to go with him. The glint in his eye. The awkward glance while he was waiting for your answer.

However, if you were to hear his explanation a year ago, you'd feel bad, crushed. Now, since you've spent time around him you begin to understand details, little things. He still thinks you want to fix him and it's not true. You know Greg House is not normal. You know he's not.

As he walked away from you, there was something there. What however, you are uncertain. What is really going on in his head that made him ask you. You're still uncertain. All you know is he isn't himself.

You press the button twice to go down and muse about it. Time and time again you told yourself to forget, but you couldn't. Greg House is different.

"Cameron."

You don't need to turn around to know who it is. There is something strange between the two of you. The air is thicker when he's around, heightened with unresolved tension. You close your eyes and release the breath you didn't realize you were holding.

"When you open your eyes I'll still be here, just so you know."

"Not now, House." You respond, tiredly. "Its late."

"Let's grab a drink, my treat." He tries again. Why he's trying, you don't know.

"No, House." You look him in the eye and say what you meant to say before. "You tried to get me off your back. Tried to defeat me liking you. Now you want to date me? What's changed? You are not healthy, House. You are not thinking clearly."

He looks at you, befuddled. Speechless even. The bell finally dings to signal the arrival of an elevator. As the doors switch open he catches your wrist firmly and turns you to him. "I am healthy."

You shake your head and look into his eyes. "You are not Greg House."

"Then who am I?"

"I don't know, but you are not him."

"I've changed."

"I didn't want you to, didn't ask you to."

He lets go as the doors start to close and holds open the doors with his hand. As you step inside, you take one final look at him. He's shaken, withdrawn. You press the first floor button and give a soft half smile. "Goodnight."

As the door shuts between you, you hear his soft sigh before the lift jerks into motion. You figure he's gone back into his office to brood about the case he couldn't solve. Maybe there is more there. However, you don't have the time to think about it as the lift stops and you step out to walk towards the doors.

The night air is cool as you look up and see the light on in Wilson's office. He left hours ago, something isn't right, and you know it.
