1. The Carriage

“So Moony tell me again why we have to go out there in this blizzard to wait for these bloody brats?” Sirius gripped pulling a wrinkled shirt over his head and picking a crumpled pair of pants up off the floor to throw on as well. Remus frowned in disapproval and disgust, as Sirius simply smelled them before sliding them on.

“Because Sirius you and James volunteered to be the Aurors overseeing the tournament. You’re supposed to be at every event in case something happens,” Remus signed with a roll of his eyes. Honestly, he didn’t know why he put up with Sirius half of the time. He was reminded however as Sirius swayed over and wrapped an arm around his waist, pulling him against a firm, hot body and nipping at his neck.

“I can think of much better things to do… why not have a warm bath, or we could just go back to the bed,” Remus pulled away before he was tempted to … again.

“Get you’re jacket Padfoot,” he said walking towards the door with Sirius following dejectedly behind him.

“Why do we have to wait for them outside anyway? It’s not like they can’t walk themselves inside where it’s warm. No they bloody well have to make us wait in the freezing cold. When we could be waiting in the Great Hall where the food is, but no we have to starve, and this stupid jacket, why did I grab this one, I hate this one! And these fucking pants are too tight - Are these your? I should have taken a shower before we left…”

“What’s Padfoot complaining about now?” James asked walking up beside Remus, smiling in amusement as he could hear Sirius' grumbling like a fly buzzing in the background.

“Everything,” Remus answered rolling his eyes - he tended to do that a lot with Sirius.

Lily walked up a few seconds later glancing at Sirius. “What’s wrong with Sirius?” She questioned with a frown.

“Everything,” James and Remus answered together.

“Ahhh…” Lily commented with a nod of her head. “Got up on the wrong side of the bed?”

“More like didn’t want to get up at all,” Remus said chuckling, and glancing back fondly at his mate.

“I can see that,” James said reaching over and ruffling Sirius' already messy hair. “Mate did you even brush it this morning?” He asked chuckling.

“Did you brush yours?” Sirius shot back irritably.

“Hey, mine’s natural I’ll have you know!” James pouted playfully.

“So where’s you’re jacket, Lily didn’t make you wear one, because if I have to suffer going outside then so do you,” Sirius said still a bit grumpy.

Remus sighed and rolled his eyes. “Honestly Sirius, when are you going to remember that James' doesn’t need a jacket. The cold doesn’t affect him” This reminded only seemed to make Sirius even grumpier though.

“Yeah, bloody vampire,” he grumbled crossing his arms over his chest.

“Hey!” James protested loudly. “It’s not my fault I was born better than everyone else.”

There was a snort from behind them. “Arrogant as always.”

The four friends turned to see Severus Snape walking towards them, followed closely by Lucius Malfoy and a few others coming out to greet their guest. With the pasts Severus, Lucius, James and Sirius shared most would think they would hate each other. But considering the war and Severus' role as a spy for the Light side, they had quickly been able to overcome their petty school rivalries in order to work together against a foe far more significant than Slytherin vs. Gryffindor.

Sirius and James had Jobs as Aurors in the British Ministry of Magic, while Remus, Lily, and Severus had stayed on at Hogwarts to teach. Lucius was on the board of governors, but not only was Lucius high up in the Ministry, he was also head of one of the largest vampire clans in all of Europe - which made him a very powerful ally to have. After they had become friends James had joined the Malfoy clan, as not only head of Lucius' guard, but also as his friend. It had surprised many who had taught them as students, but they didn’t let their past rivalries get in the way.

Now they were all back at Hogwarts again because of the Triwizard Tournament, and because of the security measures that were be set in place. James and Sirius had been sent as head Aurors to keep an eye on things at each major event, and to keep an eye on things around the school while guest continuously went in and out. There was also a member of the Board of Governors sent to survey everything going on with the Tournament. Upon hearing about the fairly easy jobs James, Sirius, and Lucius had immediately volunteered - being able to see their old friends, their lovers, and James his daughter, and Lucius his son, had been an extra bonus.

They finally exited the entrance hall to come out behind a sea of Hogwarts students waiting for their competition to arrive. James heard Lily sigh beside him, through Sirius' constant complaining, and glanced at her in concern. He watched curiously as she surveyed all of the shivering students with a small frown, her eyes lingering on the group of seventh years standing at the back of the perfect line formations of each house.

“Lily?” He asked in concern knowing exactly what she was thinking about and not liking it one bit, because the thought had crossed his mind as well, and it had left him feeling empty and cold. Harry would have been old enough to be a champion along with his other seventh year classmates. Lucius' son, Draco’s, age in fact, well two months older than Draco. James remembered when the two boys had been born. They had gotten on rather well - even as babies. James imagined that they would have been the best of friend, perhaps like brothers - or as Lily and Narcissa had hoped maybe even more.

“Oh,” Lily blinked quickly as if coming out of some sort of daze. “I - I was just - just thinking.” She scanned the crowd of students until her eyes landed on the blond Slytherin so that she wouldn’t have to look at her husband.

Sirius, Severus, Lucius, and Remus glanced at each other nervously. James stared at his wife in surprise and swallowed hard past the lump that had formed in his throat. He needed to find a way to get her mind on something else. Lily still tended to have her bad days when it came to Harry, and she hadn’t had one in a while, but James definitely didn’t think that today would be a good day to have one.

“I wonder what Riley has been up to?” James abruptly questioned with a strained laugh, attempting to distract his wife from her more depressing thoughts. He searched the crowd until he spotted a fiery red head, not to be mistaken for one of the Weasley children’s orange mop; his daughter’s hair was fire red just like her mothers.

Looking down at the rather tall fourteen-year-old, he grinned, as she pushed one of the boys next to her to the ground for stepping on her foot. That was his daughter, all right. She had gotten her mothers looks, as well as Lily’s genes - because of her vampire gene being dormant, she had been born a human like Lily. She was tall however, and lean like a vampire, but her skin was the color of honey and her eyes were simply hazel instead of the almost glowing gold of James' own.

Unfortunately, for most, she had also gotten James' rather bold personality.

“I don’t know, but I’m afraid to even think about it,” Lily said watching her daughter with a frown. “She’s far too much like you and Sirius were.”

“You wound me love.” James said dramatically, although he was extremely relieved to have been able to take her mind off of the more depressing thoughts concerning their lost child.

Ever since the loss of Harry, they had struggled to overcome the shock and grief of it. Not only the fact of losing a child, but also that it had been one of their best friends who had betrayed them. Peter Pettigrew had been asked to look after Harry while they’d gone out on an important Order mission. Peter hadn’t hesitated in leading his master, Lord Voldemort, to Godric’s Hollow - where they had decided to hide for a while before moving on to another location. By the time they’d realized what had happened and the Order had finally arrived they were already too late. The house was burning and the Dark Mark was shining even through the thick, black smoke.

They had attempted to put out the flames, but they’d already known that it was too late. The house had become nothing more than a pile of rubble and ashes on the earth - with no hope of anyone that had still been inside surviving. They were unable to find Harry or even Peter for that matter, and no hope of identifiable remains either. Snape had shown up hours later with the news that the Dark Lord had disappeared, and that Peter hadn’t been seen again by any Death Eaters.

A few days later they learned that the Death Eaters had disbanded. The entire wizarding world was amazed. How could a single child have caused the downfall of one of the most powerful wizards, the most powerful Dark Lord, in history? Harry Potter had become famous - praised for something he would never even remember. The only ones who hadn’t celebrated that night were those who had loved the baby boy who had been the sacrifice of winning.

Many were still wary though, not willing to believe that the Dark Lord was really gone, but after a while the wizarding world soon found itself falling into a calm peace. Things began to settle down - becoming routine again.

As for the Potters and their friends though they suffered greatly over the loss of Harry every day. They were overwhelmed with regret that they hadn’t been able to save him. That they hadn’t watched him better - protected him better - that they hadn’t done something differently. Harry would never have the chance to grow up, to know how much he had been loved. But soon the years passed by, Riley was born, and they continued on with life, but they never forgot, they never let go.

James didn’t think the pain would every go away.

Someone had once said that time healed all wounds. Whoever had said that was full of shit. The pain never went away. The emptiness left behind could never be filled. The longing never died out. The deep ache never dulled. You simply got used to it. You simply learned to survive - to keep going. You learned to live with it, but it never went away. It never healed - maybe scabbed over, but never healed.

They waited for nearly ten more minutes until something finally happened, and James was glad for the distraction, as he hadn’t liked the dark road his thoughts were taking him down. He had managed to distract Lily just fine, but he didn’t think it a good idea for him to have one of his bad days right now either.

“Look! Finally!” Sirius exclaimed pointing out a large black blob coming toward them in the sky.

“That must be Beauxbaton Academy,” Remus said as he squinted at the dot with his werewolf vision.

“We should probably head down there,” Lucius answered standing importantly and starting down the steps of Hogwarts castle - gliding gracefully across the snow.

James and Sirius looked at each other and sighed, the fun was over, it was now time to start acting like adults again, and doing their jobs. They had to set examples for the little ones after all. The pair followed after Lucius, Severus, Lily, and Remus who were steadily making a part through the crowd of students. Approaching the head of the crowd, where the rest of the school staff came into view all with eyes squinting at the approaching dot in the sky.

Soon the vague shapes became more distinct as they quickly advanced on the castle. It was four carriages, two smaller white ones, one larger golden one, and one even bigger black one. They were utterly huge, each the size of a large house, and they were being pulled through the air by two dozen white, winged horses as large as giraffes. However, solid black winged horses, with red eyes and flames dancing around their feet were pulling the black and largest carriage.

The students stood amazed ooohhing and ahhhing at the sight - particularly the girls.

The coaches landed gracefully on the soft snow, and everyone gazed on with bated breath. You could tell that they were extremely costly and lavish from the intricate gold edging and the beautiful marble stone they seemed to be carved out of. James wondered briefly what they must look like on the inside. On each door was an emblem of two crossed wands each emitting stars, and the white horses were nothing if not beautifully impressive and dignified.

The black coach however was what caught most of their attention. It was made of what looked like black marble with silver edging and beautiful rubies encrusted on the door. It had an aura of darkness and power around it that made most of them want to stand back, as the hairs on their arms and neck stood on end. Unlike the white horses the black ones stomped and pawed at the ground snorting out fire, and looking positively wild and dangerous.

“Do you feel that James?” Lucius asked from beside him. James nodded his head. “Tell the guards to be on high alert,” James nodded his head again, and gave the signal. He briefly saw a figure nod in understanding before it disappeared back into the shadows.

The door of one of the smaller carriages opened immediately capturing everyone’s attention. A small, white-carpeted staircase extended smoothly down to the snow. Then around seven silken and fur robed young men descended down the steps. Several girls and even a few boys could be heard whispering and sighing favorably at the sight of them. One of the young men from the carriage rushed quickly, yet gracefully, toward the larger carriage as the rest headed to the last one. They opened just as the other had, and the flight of steps descended from each.

An immense figure could be seen coming out of the golden carriage. A few people gasped when they got their first glimpse of her. James himself was quite startled at the mass of the woman. He wasn’t sure that he’d ever seen someone as large as Madame Olympe Maxime - except for perhaps Hagrid, but she seemed even taller than him. Her shoes looked to be the size of a child’s sled, and the horses suddenly seemed incredibly small compared to this woman. She had a handsome, olive-skinned face, with large onyx eyes. She was adorned elegantly in soft, blue satin and lace with a beautiful, thick, furred shawl draped casually about her broad shoulders.

The teen that had stood respectfully by the carriage as she stepped down gave a deep bow.

Dumbledore started to clap and the rest snapping out of their shock quickly followed his lead. Madame Maxime smiled courteously and moved forward, extending a lavishly bejeweled hand. James briefly thought that he would have to cover his eyes from the reflection of the sun off of them. The headmaster, though quite tall himself, had only to barely bend his head to kiss it. Behind them, the other boys could be seen opening the last carriage in the same manner. Seven blue, silk clad girls flitted gracefully down, curtsying as the boys bowed low to each of them out of respect - each youth then offered his arm and his partner accepted it gracefully.

James was sure that Riley was quite appalled by the entire show. She had never been one for sappiness and sentimentality. He himself felt a bit queasy by the entire show and glancing at Sirius he could tell he felt similarly. Lily however was delighted as she sighed saying how sweet it was. In fact, many of the girls had gotten that dreamy look to them when something romantic was going on.

James sighed. He would have to get Lily some flowers or something later.

“Welcome to Hogwarts,” Dumbledore began. “My dear Madame Maxime.” The Beauxbaton’s students began lining up behind their headmistress, boys on one side with the girls on the other still clinging to their arms.

“Albus, I ‘ope I find you well?” Madame Maxime inquired with a heavily accented voice.

“In excellent health I thank you,” Dumbledore answered, twinkling as always.

Waving a hand behind her, she said, “My pupils.” Each teen bowed or curtsied respectfully to the headmaster who gave a small nod of his head.

“What do you zink of my carriages?” She said, looking proudly at the beautiful, figures behind them. “Quiet magnifque’ no?”

“Indeed they are quite magnificent,” Dumbledore agreed, admiring them himself. “But what of the last one?” He asked indicating to the black one that had yet to open.

“Ah, Adrian… ee’ will be joining uz shortly I am sure,” Madame Maxime said turning to look at the silent carriage as well. She looked thoughtful for a moment before turning to one of her students and speaking rapidly in French. The student paled for a second before turning and running out gracefully toward the large black carriage.

“I ‘ave sent Lawrence to find out,” she answered their questioning gazes.

“He gets an entire carriage to himself?” Professor McGonagall questioned curiously eyeing the large carriage and it’s fierce looking horses warily.

“E’ ez the French Minizter’s son,” Madam Maxime answered, as Lawrence came back looking rather flushed. He said something to her quickly in French before moving back to his place in line. A worried look passed over Madam Maxime’s face before she quickly covered it with a forced smile. “He will be joining uz later… I am afraid e ‘ez not feeling well at ze moment.”

“Does he need to see the nurse?” Dumbledore asked looking genuinely concerned.

“No, no,” Madam Maxime answered quickly. “I’m sure it iz nothing,” she said waving it off, but they could tell that she didn’t really think it was nothing. In fact they could see that she was quite worried. “Karkaroff ‘as not arrived yet?” She asked quickly changing the subject before any of them could inquire further.

“I’m afraid not,” the Headmaster answered. “Would you like to step inside to warm up or would you like to stay and greet him?”

“I z’ink we would like to warm up,” the large woman answered looking toward her shivering students; it hadn’t been a good idea to wear silk clothing. “But ze ‘orses…”

Dumbledore smiled in amusement before answering, “our Care if Magical Creatures professor will be absolutely delighted to care for them.”

“But my steeds require forceful ‘andling,” Madame Maxime said hesitantly. She looked as though she doubted whether anyone at Hogwarts could handle her horses. James privately agreed with her even Hagrid would have his hands full. “Zey are very strong…”

“I assure you that Hagrid will be up to the job,” Dumbledore reassured.

“Very well,” Madame Maxime bowed slightly as she replied. “Will you please inform zis Hagrid zat ze white ‘orses drink only single-malt whiskey, and Adrian will inform him of the others if ‘ee needs ‘elp?”

Dumbledore bowed in return. “It shall be attended to.”

“Come,” Madame Maxime imperiously ordered her students, and they parted the way through the Hogwarts crowd.

“So why do you think the Ministers son isn’t coming out yet?” Sirius asked after Madame Maxime and her student’s passed through the door.

“You heard her - he’s not feeling well,” Remus answered although he didn’t seem to believe it either.

“Yeah, but that can’t be the only reason. She looked concerned,” Lily replied gaining the attention of the other professors around them who’d started listening in.

“He could just be some spoiled brat who thinks he’s too important to join his fellow students,” Severus said unconcerned.

“Severus!” Lily scolded as Snape merely smirked at her. “Honestly you haven’t even met the boy.”

“I’m just throwing my idea’s out there,” the Potions Master replied raising his hands up in defense - Lily’s temper was not something you wanted to mess with.

“He could be right…” Sirius trailed off, actually considering it.

“No… there’s something else,” James said staring at the black carriage. “I’ve just got this feeling.”

“What is it?” Lily asked looking at her husband intently who was shifting on his feet uncomfortably.

“I don’t know…” James answered uncertainly. “Something’s not right - I just…”

“James, Lucius,” Remus suddenly cut in frowning, “do you hear that?” He asked ears perking at some noise that was too low for the normal humans to pick up.

James stood silent for a moment, listening closely for what the werewolf was talking about. He could see Lucius doing the same. An odd noise was drifting upward from the ground. It was like a muffled rumbling and thundering sound, moving steadily nearer and becoming louder by the second. Several shouts of “the ground!” sounded throughout the crowd of students. They looked about nervously, wondering if they should run somewhere else.

A great disturbance was taking place in the middle of Hogwarts Lake. Waves began slapping against the shore as the surface of the water began to bubble and rumble, and then right in the very center, a tall slender mast appeared and the water began to swirl like a whirlpool. Slowly a ship rose out of the lake. Finally, with a great splashing and booming sound the ship emerged completely and settled on top of the water. It sailed closer to the shore and the clunk of a plank was heard as it hit the ground.

Soon people began disembarking. They could see several bulky silhouettes as they walked off of the ship and onto dry land. They noticed, with some relief that their stoutness was due to the big shaggy fur cloaks that they wore, and was not a hereditary trait among them. It would have been odd for the girls at least to look that way. The man leading them however was dressed quite differently. His furs were sleek and black, much like his long hair.

“Dumbledore!” He called out stoutly walking toward them. “How are you my dear fellow?”

“Wonderful, thank you, Headmaster Karkaroff,” Dumbledore replied, stepping forward and shaking the Durmstrang headmasters hand firmly.

“Dear old Hogwarts,” Karkaroff murmured, looking up at the castle smiling; his teeth were quite yellow and contrasted sharply with fathomless black eyes, and pale sallow skin. “How wonderful to be here.”

“Perhaps we should get in from the cold, Professor Karkaroff? Madame Maxime has already arrived. I’m sure the students would be quite grateful to finally fill their stomachs after such a long trip!”

Karkaroff laughed his brutal laugh and followed Dumbledore as he headed up to the castle. The shivering Hogwarts students following with their professors trailing behind. James and the others soon followed sparing one last glance at the ominous black carriage still sitting silently. As soon as the doors to the castle closed behind them though the door to the carriage opened revealing a tall pale black haired, green-eyed, young man.
