Lesson of Life

Hinata’s heart pounded with anticipation. Now was the time. For three days, she had been waiting. For three days, she had been counting. For three days, she had been watching. All for this. The small crack grew wider, revealing part of a colorful wing. Her eyes widened. She hadn’t even seen the whole insect, yet she thought it was beautiful, nonetheless. The pale chrysalis parted further; dainty yellow wings sprang joyfully from their prior entrapment.

“Sugoi, ne?” She called softly, yet excitedly, to the stoic man kneeling beside her. He nodded mutely. Why had he even agreed to this? He loved to see her happy. More than he would ever admit.

The petite creature seemed to stretch, dangling boldly from its previous prison. Cautiously, she extended a pale finger for the butterfly to rest upon. It accepted, much her to surprise.

“Do you see? Do you see now?” she said softly, observing the golden wings resting on the pad of her finger. She gently took his hand with her unoccupied one; he stiffened slightly. Pleading his cooperation with her eyes, he relented. The butterfly crawled slowly, unsure, from Hinata’s pale skin to Gaara’s calloused hand. It tickled his palm. The golden insect looked curiously at him, flicking its antennae.

“ Is this enough proof for you? I told you all along.” He turned his light green eyes to her. She smiled softly in return. “You are not a monster.”

Gaara was still baffled as to why an innocent angel like herself would waste precious time on him. Perhaps he truly was not a beast of blood, as he had thought himself to be. Maybe, just maybe, he had a chance for this strange emotion she was trying to teach him. Maybe he had a chance for love.
