Kate

"Kate, don't leave me. Don't leave me here alone." Jack moaned softly, caressing the fallen Kate, who was now lying in his arms, her blood staining his clothing. Jack glared at the dumbstruck Sawyer and growled, "How the hell could you get her into a mess like this?"

"If you haven't noticed Jack," Sawyer put a lot of emphasis on the doctor's name, instead of using one of his more clever nicknames, "our little Freckles here, likes to play as one of the boys."

"I'm hoping you meant that as a compliment." the faint growl from Kate came. It didn't sound much like a growl. More like a faint rasp. It tugged at Jack and Sawyer's heartstrings, and they both looked sorrowfully back down at Kate. Jack had been subconsciously stroking her hair, and only noticed that when he had looked down at Kate's brunette head.

"I'm sorry Freckles. I shoulda never dragged you into this." Sawyer whispered, hardly believing what he was seeing.

"It's not your fault James," Kate said teasingly.

Jack tried his hardest not to cry, but instead, looked up furiously at the Other, who had shot Kate. It was Juliet, the Other he had secretly come to love. "How could you?" Jack growled.

"She tried to escape Jack. She had one of us at gunpoint, it was only right to-"

Jack howled, "Don't talk to me about what's right Juliet! Your man is fine, and Kate's about to die for it! There's nothing right about that!" Jack's heart felt like it was being ripped out of his chest cavity. Kate, who he had come to respect, and admire was about to die, and her murderer was Juliet, the Other he was falling in love with.

"You knew she was going to pick Sawyer eventually." Juliet's voice seemed to mock him.

"SHUT UP! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT KATE!" Jack screamed.

A cough distracted him. A deathly sick cough. Kate was coughing in his lap. "Jack . . ." she whispered faintly. "Jack . . . I'm so sorry. I thought you hated me . . . so I picked Sawyer, when the truth is-" Kate stopped speaking, and her body began to convulse.

"No!" Jack wailed, and Sawyer swore.

"Jack . . ." the whisper was so feeble, he could barely hear it.

"Kate?" he whimpered, knowing this was the end.

Sawyer muttered a wavering, "Bye Freckles." And turned away. But by the shaking of his shoulders, Jack could tell that Sawyer was crying. Sawyer fixed a watery glare at Juliet, who had a hand over her mouth, and she looked like she was about to break down in an emotional hysteria.

"Goodbye Sawyer. Don't eat all the fish biscuits, mkay?" Kate whispered. Sawyer closed his eyes, and a ghost of a smile formed on his face. "And Jack?" Kate whispered, her eyes began to flutter.

"Yes?" Jack whispered, resting a hand on her cheek.

"I love you." Silence.

"Kate? Kate? KATE!" screamed Jack, in a sorrowful wail. Kate was dead, and she was never coming back.

"I hope you're happy Juliet, cuz she's gone." Sawyer mumbled, and headed back for his cage, while Jack sat there alone in the jungle, weeping over a bloody corpse, huddled in his arms.

Jack whispered, "Oh Kate. I love you too."
