A Moment like This

Summary: All she could ever think of was him, even though she was bent on forgetting. After all, who could blame Kagome after Inuyasha nearly killed her?

‘That’s how it is. I can never ask her. But Kagome should hear that from me. I’ll go. I’ve got to see her and bid her farewell…Or else…I’ll never be able to move on,’ Inuyasha thought as he drew nearer to the Bone-Eater’s Well. Stepping out into the sunlight, he saw the one girl he didn’t expect. ‘…Kagome…’

She turned to face him. She stood up from the edge of the well and the two of them just gazed at each other for a moment. Then she opened her mouth to speak.

“Back in my own time…I thought about things,” Kagome began. “About you and Kikyo and…about me.”

“Kagome…I…” he interrupted her.

“I know. I finally understand your feelings, and…I didn’t think I could stay in this time any longer.”

“Kagome…Until I met you, I couldn’t trust anyone. But you cried, for my sake. You stayed by my side. I feel lighter with you. My heart is calm. But…I can’t afford lightness or peace. Not when…” his voice trailed off as he finished with a thought. ‘Not when Kikyo DIED chasing after me.’ “I have to protest her. I have to give Kikyo my life.”

“I know. I can’t compete against Kikyo. Because I’m…I’m still alive,” she said, giving a weak smile. He knew it was hard for her to keep her strong, upbeat composure when she talked about Kikyo. She sat back down on the well and looked at the ground. “I thought a lot about Kikyo. She and I are not at all alike. Even if I AM some reincarnation of her…I’m still not really Kikyo. My heart is mine. But, you know, there is ONE thing…She and I have in common. Just like me…” at this point, her smile faded as she looked to him. “She couldn’t bear not to see you again.”

His eyes widened as she kept speaking.

“Somehow, if think of it that way…That Kikyo felt the same way I do…It’s easier. I don’t have to hate her so much,” she joked when her smile returned. “So I dug up the courage…To come and see you.”

‘Kagome…I wanted to see you, too. But…’ he thought. He was going to say it aloud, but Kagome wasn’t finished.

“I…I want to stay with you. I won’t be able to forget you.”

‘Kagome…I…I don’t know how to answer.’

“Inuyasha…Just tell me one thing.”

“Yeah…?” he saw her stand up to face him.

“Can I stay at your side?” she asked, hope could be seen in her eyes.

His ears twitched and he repeated the question. “You…Want to stay…?”

“…Yes.”

They walked hand in hand back to the hut, never forgetting what Kagome had said. As they entered the house, both of them smiling, Sango and Miroku knew they made up. They were happy for their friends and as always, amazed at Kagome’s sincerity and forgiveness. Sango took her outside and asked her all the details. Kagome told her, but said she was still upset over his decision. It couldn’t be helped, and Sango didn’t blame her for falling in love with the half demon. Sango hugged her and they both went back in to see Miroku and Inuyasha obviously talking about the same thing.

Shippo shook his head at how Kagome managed to forgive and supposedly forget about all the cruel things Inuyasha put her through. The little fox did know all the things that went through both of their minds, and knew not to speak up; he deserved more credit than they give him. Kirara was the one who knew all about her mistress’s feelings, and a certain monk’s. They both saw their friends talk and reminisce about all things that came to mind and wandered if they knew how the other one felt…
