Note: This is a sequel to my story called Darkness. You need to read that first in order for this to make any sense what-so-ever. For those of you who have read it, this story starts in the middle of Darkness, not at the end, continuing the story from a new point of view. Keep that in mind...

Into the shadows the children will play, dancing and dancing on their merry way.

A Danny Phantom FanFiction by Cordria

Chapter 1: Remember

The lady’s medieval-style green dress flared as she sank to the floor. “Traiga mi destino en la Luz, fuera de Sombras, y poderes de Oscuridad vendrá,” she mumbled softly under her breath. A long match appeared almost magically in her fingers. She twirled it in the air, continuing to whisper under her breath before striking it against the floor. Slowly, she brought the flaming match up to the green candle’s wick. “And the young hybrid’s life…”

“Belongs to me,” Danny interrupted, eyes shooting open. His breath caught in his throat as power was yanked out of his very soul. Green eyes flared, his pupils vanishing as his vision faded to an emerald-tinged world. He looked up from his painful crouch, focusing on the woman kneeling before him.

My soul is mine, he snarled to himself as he built up a huge charge of ectoenergy. He released it in sharp waves that radiated in every direction. As the ropes disintegrated around him, he gasped in pain. It felt like someone had thrust a red-hot poker through his stomach and starting ripping out pieces of his insides.

Squinting through the pain, he glared at the evil lady who had brought this on him. Locked him the dark. Threatened his life. Tried to take over the world. She appeared to be frozen, matchstick an inch away from the green candle's wick, her reddish eyes wide with surprise. Danny pushed himself to his feet, locking his knees to prevent himself from falling back to the ground.

“Phantom!” A female’s voice echoed through the hall.

The boy wiped his head around, his electric eyes focusing on a blue-jumpsuited woman for a split second. She appeared to be struggling against the large man that was holding her arms. Mom... no…

A new wave of fear and anxiety fed into his powers, making them flare. Grimacing at the new level of pain that was twisting his stomach, he gathered twin pools of spectral energy in his hands. It’s her fault, his mind whirled as he swiveled his head back to the lady in green. It’s all her fault.

She threatened me. She threatened my family. She was going to KILL my mother! He brought his hand up, a fatal dose of ectoplasm sparking between his fingertips. The flickering green energy cast her classic features in an odd jade glow, her red irises mixing with the spectral light to become a much more human brown. Danny stared into her wide eyes, watching them fill with fear and terror.

She’s just a human, he whispered. Just before the blast left his scarred fingers, he tamped down on the amount of raw energy. It zapped the short distance between them, catching the lady in the shoulder. She toppled over backwards.

The lady taken care of, Danny’s head snapped to the guard that had tied him up. The large, Hispanic man looked like he was debating whether or not to try tackling the young, angry ghost. Danny channeled a bit more energy into a blast that threw the man against the wall.

He bit his lip to contain the howl of pain that was threatening to bubble up his throat. Funneling the stabbing energy into motion, he jumped off the dais. Knees trembling, he raced towards Maddie and the guard holding her, wincing when his bare feet caught on the carefully arranged candle sticks, sharp edges digging into his skin.

About halfway across the room Danny’s feet left the ground, his flight uneven, his head throbbing. “Let her go,” he snarled, bringing his hand up to point straight into the guard’s dark brown eyes. He jerked to an unsteady stop before them. A wave of needles swarmed through his body as he yanked more energy out of his body, forcing his hand to glow.

The guard’s eyes widened, startled by Danny’s threatening glower. The man released Maddie instantly, his hands coming up in a futile defense. Suppressing a scream of pure pain and frustration, Danny sent the energy flying into the guard’s face. He watched the man tumble backwards and slam into the wall with a small sense of pride, trying his best to ignore the aching emptiness that was creeping into the very core of his body.

“Go!” he panted, glancing into his mother’s eyes, “Run! Get help!” Scowling at her dazed expression, he raised his hand to snap his fingers in her face to get her attention. “M…” he trailed off, staring at his fingers in surprise. Although normally somewhat translucent, he could see straight through his hand without a problem. He gazed at the back of his hand for a second before his eyes focused on Maddie’s expression through his hand. Her eyes weren’t looking at him… they were looking through him at…

Danny spun around, searching for the problem. The first guard he had taken out was clamoring to his feet, holding his head, glaring daggers at the pair. Watching the man, eyes wide, mind whirling, he snapped at Maddie. “I can’t hold them off for long.” If I can hold them off at all. When his mother just continued to stand there, watching him for a moment, her eyes unfocused. “Go!” he screamed.

She hesitated just one more second, reaching out and grabbed Danny’s hand. He blinked, glancing down at the absurd sight – one see-through, bloody hand, and one completely normal hand. It felt weird; her warm, solid hand against his. “Stay alive, we need to talk,” she commanded. Danny looked up, meeting her eyes. A shiver of hot energy flickered through him, a grin sliding onto his face. He nodded, then turned away from his mother, drawing his hand out of hers.

Listening to her race out of the room, Danny settled into a simple defensive stance, watching the man stagger forwards. He screamed, a wordless challenge full of terror, pain, and anger, and called another ball of ectoplasm into his hands. It swirled into existence slowly, dragging icy claws through his brain. As soon as he released the sphere of power, he collapsed to the floor, not bothering to watch its flight.

Barely able to push himself to his hands and knees, he shut his eyes and let a groan slip through his clenched teeth. I can see through my eyelids, he thought dismally. This isn’t good. His trembling arms finally buckled, sending him the rest of the way to the floor.

He curled up, his stomach twisting, his brain burning, every muscle shrieking in protest. So this is it? A wave of stings blasted through him, sending his thoughts scattering like puzzle pieces. Everything vanished in that wave of pain except for one thought. Oh, please just let me die… let me die... let me die...

“You thought you could win, hybrid?” a voice sneered in his ear, the pain receding for just a moment. Danny turned his head to peer up at the annoying lady in green, his eyes narrowing. “I am better than you,” she continued, seemingly oblivious to the hatred glowing in Danny’s eyes. “You are disease, a blight on humanity. But a useful blight. I don’t know how you pulled off that little trick, but now you can’t even stand, can you?” She laughed.

From behind her mussed skirts, she brought out that single green candle, setting it between them. “Luz,” she whispered, pulling out another match. “Sombras.” She struck its red head against the floor, watching the match flare to life. “Oscuridad,” she smiled, touching the light to the candle wick.

The candle burst into light, the flame glowing a brilliant green. Danny stared into it, breathing quickly. But nothing happened. He blinked, twisting his gaze to glance up at her messy, caramel hair. “That’s it?” he muttered, slightly disappointed. “Your brother changed all of reality and all you do is light a candle?”

She smiled cruelly, leaning forwards, her nose inches from his. “Your life is mine,” she whispered. “Don’t underestimate me.”

Suddenly she stood up, pulling a small walkie-talkie out of a pocket. “Charlie. Rob.” She waited, static crackling on the radio. Still curled up on the floor, Danny wrinkled his forehead, wondering who she was talking to.

“Yup,” came hissing through the tiny speaker.

“The creature’s mother is headed your way. Stop her via any means necessary.”

“You need her awake?” The man’s voice was emotionless.

“The ceremony has been started,” she said, turning to smile down at Danny. She caught his eyes, speaking her next words slowly, her grin spreading. “She doesn’t need to be alive.”

“Yes, ma’am!” the voice crackled through the static. “We see her – she won’t get past us.”

There were more than two guards! Danny’s mind raced, horror sweeping through him. No! He pushed himself to a sitting position, staring over his shoulder in the direction his mother had run. Mom!

“Yes see, blight?” Jessica Oscura purred, delighting in the terror on his face. “I win.”

“No,” he whispered, his eyes narrowing as he turned back to glared up into her face. “You can’t win.”

“Why not?” she laughed, turning her back on him.

Danny looked down at his hands, almost completely transparent. The edges of his arms almost blended into the dark shadows marring the floor. Suddenly he clenched his fingers, a snarl transforming his face. “Because I said so,” he snapped. Energy swirled around him, yanking at his body as it zapped and sizzled in the air. Howling at the pain, he formed the energy into a small blast and sent it flying into her back.

His scream cut off as his body lost cohesion for a heartbeat. No! He trembled, pulling his body back into reality. He could barely remain sitting, shaking as he fought off the panic that was trying to envelope him. Finally, he licked his lips and took a deep breath. I’m okay, I’m okay, I’m okay, he chanted to himself.

Pushing himself to his feet, Danny staggered across the room. Jessica Oscura was lying in a puddle of green skirts and caramel curls, blood from a cut on her forehead trickling onto the waxed floor. He stood there, weaving drunkenly, watching her breathe.

“Mom,” he whispered, tears in his eyes. For a second he thought about trying to go save her, but he sank to the floor, his head dropping down to tiles. Pressing his forehead against the cool mosaic, he closed his eyes and let misery take him over.

I can’t even move. How can I save her?

His breath rasping in his throat, Danny knelt in the tiled room and could do nothing but pray for her safety.

To be continued…

Note: Luz means 'light', sombras means 'shadows', and oscuridad means 'darkness' - roughly, vaguely, you know the drill.
