The names are dead. They blur and lose any semblance of meaning. To him, they mean far too much.

"Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri…"

Martha stops in the doorway. She knows what he's saying, she sat by his bedside and listened one night.

"Rose, Jack, Mickey." The Doctor finishes with a sigh.

Martha moves on in her quest to find a kitchen to quell the midnight munchies. She knows that one day she will become another name on the list, just another collection of syllables marking her arrival on the Tardis, her place in his chronology. Everything ends. It's the first thing you learn in this life.

Behind her, the Doctor begins to mutter again.

"Susan, Barbara, Ian, Vicki..."
