Chapter 20: Lost Soul
“No man chooses evil because it is evil;
He only mistakes it for happiness,
The good he seeks.”
- Mary Wollstonecraft
Noticing Sakura’s discomfort at Akio’s harsh words Syaoran’s eyes filled with rage and disgust as he ran towards Akio. “HOW DARE YOU!” he yelled as he raced towards her swinging his Chinese Sword and parchments about, “Element Fire!” he screamed as a fiery inferno made a direct hit at Akio as he continued to race forward not letting his guard down in case he mistook the accuracy of his attack, disappearing into the heavy smoke.
All fell silent, as the light from the sun shone blissfully down upon them, as if to mock the horror that had already fell upon the city.
Younger Sakura trembled as she ran forward a little, “Syaoran?”
“Aaa!” Syaoran yelled; his voice echoing though the gradually clearing air. Stumbling away from his opponent he never let her leave his sight as he clutched his heavily bleeding left arm.
Younger Sakura’s eyes widened. “SYAORAN!” her scream rung through the air as she raced forward a little, only to be held back by her and Syaoran’s older selves. “Let go! I’ve got to get to him!” she exclaimed in a panicked tone.
“Sakura you mustn’t,” Older Syaoran replied worriedly, “He needs to give continue.”
“No let me go!” she cried as she struggled to free herself to no avail.
Older Sakura Tightened her grip oh her younger self’s shoulder, “I’m afraid we can’t let you do that…”
Looking up at her horrifiedly Sakura shook her head in disbelief, “We’re a team. I need to help him…I need to!” she screamed as she pushed out of their grasp and tears fell from her eyes.
A dark light shone from behind her as she turned back to where her older self and Syaoran’s older self stood. Both figures glittered an odd dark light as random sparks of light seemingly spiralled away from the bodies as they vanished entirely.
“Crap!” Akio exclaimed as she took a step backwards.
Takeo’s eyes widened alertly. “WHAT? IT WAS A SPELL! WHERE ARE THEIR MAGISTIES?” he panicked as he looked towards the two Kero’s and Yue.
Sakura didn’t care about that at the moment as she raced to Syaoran’s side worriedly, placing a trembling hand on his back, “Syaoran-kun…”
Looking back at her in the corner of his eye he forced a smile. “Don’t worry I saw what happened…Oh and I’m not too badly hurt, I can still look after you,” he whispered, “Sakura…”
Biting down on her lip she frowned slightly, “Yeah?”
“No time for chit-chat lover boy!” Akio screeched as she dove through the air towards them as Syaoran pushed Sakura out of the way, bringing his sword up in front of him meeting in a pang of metal as his face and Akio’s were now inches apart. Neither of them willing to give in or give up on their common goal; survival.
Glaring back at her his eyes narrowed. “What’s wrong with you! Where are your real parents from this time?” he snarled.
Akio’s raven locks brushed over her eyes as she tilted her head to the side. “How would I know the Black Heron is my overlord you fool. I don’t possess enough knowledge to cast such a spell,” she muttered in reply as she flared her nostrils.
Noticing that she was distracted by his question Syaoran quickly grabbed his sword into her unprotected thigh. Biting down on his bottom lip he immediately jumped backwards.
Akio’s legs wobbled as she let out a sharp cry of pain; hesitantly kneeling down on her injured leg.
Syaoran dropped into a low stance; his sword above his head yet tilted downwards slightly, his favourite stance.
Akio peered up through her long raven locks as they fell over her eyes. “Now I think this welcome should come to a close…” she muttered icily as she stood up once more; “I‘ll kill you!”
Sakura‘s eyes widened as she looked down at her card pouch, ‘What card? What card? SYAORAN-KUN!’
“OH NO YOU DON‘T!” Smaller transformed Kero yelled as he jumped between Akio and Syaoran; followed by the other Kero and Yue.
“Kero?” Syaoran whispered in confusion.
Spinning around Younger Kero sighed. “This doesn‘t mean we have any sort of a truce…OK BRAT!” he snapped as he shot a glare at the teenager.
Syaoran snorted at this, “Like I‘d really want that…”
“What did you want here Akio?” Yue asked their opponent; bringing some sanity back to their current situation.
Raising an eyebrow Akio glanced a Yue lopsidedly, “I already told you I need my brother, Hiroshi…” she growled.
“Is that all?” Yue asked as he looked at her confusedly.
Bigger Kero’s eyes widened at this comment. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN, ‘IS THAT ALL!’ HIROSHI IS THE HEIR TO THE THRONE!” he boomed as he stamped a paw down on the ground.
“Well with their parents missing I‘m not sure they‘re just after him,” Yue muttered in reply, “That‘s what I meant.”
“Oh…” Kero said in almost a whisper as he looked back towards Akio.
Akio’s eyes widened angrily, “ENOUGH! I DON‘T HAVE TIME FOR YOU THREE FOOLS!” she yelled as she gathered red energy in her hand and threw it in their direction; encasing them in a force field so that only herself, Syaoran and Sakura were outside it.
“This isn‘t good…” both Keros whispered.
Smirking as Akio raced towards Syaoran as he jumped through the air making a couple of hand signs, causing his sword to glow a light blue. Circling it above his head he looked down at Akio, bringing the sword with him in all its glory as it made a direct hit; sending her smashing into a tree heavily bleeding.
Stabbing his sword into the grass beside him Syaoran leant on it; watching Akio try to get to her feet, and failing miserably each time. “Now I‘ll ask again, where are your parents?” he demanded as his eyes narrowed.
She snickered as she clicked her fingers and vanished from his sight, freeing the others from her force field.
Sakura looked over at Syaoran worriedly as he shook with anger and frustration. He wasn’t even facing her…She’d let him down, again. It was like the days when she was a rookie card captor, except she was no rookie anymore she was the mistress of the clow. ‘Yeah, well fat lot of help I did with my powers just then…’ she thought angrily. Walking over to his side she placed a hand on his shoulder, “Syaoran-kun?”
Looking at her for a moment he froze, “…Yeah?” he asked coldly.
A little taken back by his tone Sakura’s lips trembled. “I‘m sorry. I wanted to help I did but I-I…I was frightened and I didn‘t know what to do. It was as if everything I knew went out the window,” she rasped as she clutched at her staff with her other hand.
Syaoran looked at her oddly. “What are you talking about? I wouldn’t have wanted you to help me Sakura,” he replied slowly but bluntly.
“Huh?” she muttered as a puzzled look passed over her features, “But we‘re a team I was meant to help you.”
Upon hearing her he scratched the back of his neck nervously as he blushed a little, “Yeah but I was getting pummelled out there…I wouldn‘t have wanted you to be put in danger like that.”
Her eyes widened as she blushed a little; looking down at her feet they shifted nervously on the bloodstained grass. “I was so frightened though…” she mumbled as she bit down on her bottom lip to stop it trembling, “I though she was really going to kill you. I couldn‘t let that happen.”
Syaoran smiled a little as he took one of her hands in his. “I‘m not dying anytime soon. It‘s not on my agenda,” he replied with a laugh.
A faint smile formed on Sakura’s lips as she slowly moved forward, resting her head on his torso as she wrapped her arms around him. “What about the Black Heron? If Akio is this strong then we have our work cut out for us against him,” she whispered worriedly, “And the kids; what do we do about them? We how do we tell them about their parents when we know barely anything about it?”
His eyes widened as he blushed furiously at their contact initiated by Sakura. Looking down at her he slowly wrapped a arm around her wait and another softly at the back of her neck, “It‘ll all be ok in the end…You‘ll see.”
Sakura smiled as she closed her eyes, snuggling closer to him. “I hope so,” she whispered as she lifted one of her feet of the ground a little, “I really hope so.”
Yue and the two now de-transformed Kero’s watched in amusement nearby.
“That‘s the second time this afternoon!” smaller Kero exclaimed as his eyes shook, “Can‘t they get all sentimental when I‘m not around? It makes me want to barf!”
Yue snickered, “Well it gets worse…”
“When they‘re married is gets a lot worse than this…” larger Kero added as he sighed.
Small Kero’s eyes widened, “THANKS FOR THAT NOW I HAVE SOMETHING TO DREAD ALREADY!” he yelled furiously, waving his arms madly in the air.
“Stop being so childish!” older Kero snapped as he flew over to his otherself.
Kero glared at him as he placed a small paw on his heart, “Me? Childish?” he said in almost a whisper as he closed his eyes for a moment. “WELL WHAT DOES THAT MAKE YOU!” he bellowed as he flew forward pressing his forehead against his other selves forehead.
Yue smiled at the bickering before him. “We better get back to the palace, the kids and Touya might need our help,” he called over to Syaoran and Sakura.
Springing apart Syaoran and Sakura looked down at their feet blushing, quickly glancing over at the other person, before slowly walking back towards Yue and the two Kero’s who were still bickering.
“Stop it already you two!” Sakura exclaimed as she pulled both of them away from one another by their wings, “We have more important things to deal with at the moment!”
Both of them glared up at her.
“Hey let go of my wings! This does hurt you know!” the smaller of the two complained as he winced in pain.
“Well it serves you both right,” she muttered as she released them.
“Come on,” Syaoran called as he stood in front of Yue, “Let’s go already.”
A smile quickly spread across Sakura features as her eyes tweaked slightly, “Ok lets go!”
