Chapter One: Remains
Leia wasn’t having the best of days. Somewhere between diplomatic luncheons, presiding over important meetings and signing paperwork to decide the fate of the universe, life was getting a little hectic. She pushed a lock of dark brown hair off her face, and continued to try and make sense of the reports lying on the desk before her.
Relief came in the form of two sharp knocks on her door. She stood up, wondering why someone would come to her office without calling first. Either it was someone she knew, or something was seriously wrong. She rushed to the door and hit the ‘open’ button.
A young man stood in the wide doorway, seeming a little shy. His skin was baked, as though he had been under the sun too long, but this was all she could see of his personal appearance, for the rest of his body was covered with a deep green uniform. Even his hair was neatly tucked underneath a square cap. “ I have a delivery for a Luke Skywalker,” he stammered, and she got the impression that he knew exactly who he was talking to.
Unsure of what she should do, she simply nodded. “ I’ll take it for him. Might I ask you sent you?”
“ Oh…” He was already reaching into a large delivery bag that he carried at his side. “ I’m from Tatooine. We’ve gotten clearance to remove the Lars home, seeing as it’s been destroyed for quite a while now. We believe that some of the damaged equipment there is leaking toxins… anyways, we’ve managed to recover some personal items that we thought Mr. Skywalker would like to have back.”
Leia frowned. “ Clearance to remove it? Did Luke… allow you to do this?”
“ Yes ma’am.” He managed to extract a large package from the bag, and handed it over to her. With his work done, he bowed slightly, hurrying away rather quickly.
With a gentle sound, the door closed. Leia fingered the orange-red, paper-wrapped package with careful motions. Luke’s things… from his home on Tatooine… Well, the only right thing to do was to call up Luke. She sighed. Hopefully, this discovery would be a happy one.
In a few moments she was connected to Luke. His face appeared on the small screen. “ What is it? Is something wrong?”
“ Why does something have to be wrong for me to call you?” She let a cautious smile form over her face, knowing that he could sense her worry in a heartbeat. “ Where are you?”
“ I’m on planet, if that’s what you’re asking. I’m near, if you need anything.”
Typical Luke. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “ I don’t need anything. But… I was just given a package for you.”
Luke nodded. “ Have you opened it?”
“ Of course not!” She found herself gripping the package to her chest, a strange emotion rolling over her. Was it curiosity? “ It’s… from Tatooine.”
Instantly, Luke’s face changed. “ Oh… I see. I was wondering if they’d find anything.”
“ You let them destroy the house?”
“ Why not?” Even from the small size of his image on screen, Leia could see his eyes turn away from her face. “ It’s in my past. I need to move on.” He shrugged. “ You can throw that stuff away. It’s not really important – probably just old action figures. In fact, you can go through it. You might find something for Anakin or Jacen to play with.” He tilted his head. “ Are you sure I shouldn’t come up?”
“ You can if you want to… but really, shouldn’t you at least look?”
“ No.” That was that. There was no arguing with a Jedi. She nodded and said her goodbyes, and then cut the call off. This wasn’t right… she couldn’t just go through Luke’s things. Still… he wanted her to get rid of them…
She sat down at the desk and shoved the papers aside. The wrapping was thick, and she had to use a letter opener to rip through into the center. Carefully, she pulled out two action figures of Old Republic heroes. Luke had called that one right. She set those aside and took out a small ship model. It was ancient, but Anakin would love it. Next were two odd tools that she didn’t recognize – probably something for building models.
When the toys had been cleared away, there was only one thing left – a thin blue disc. She imagined that it would be some homemade adventure by Luke and his friends. Grinning at the thought, she sent it into her computer.
Green filled the screen. Images began to pop up, racing around until they were in the proper positions. Most of it was text, with the only pictures being a few logos and the portrait of a rather ugly man. She stared at his face, slightly unnerved. He had short blonde hair and a rather scruffy beard, along with two very thin green eyes. The way the picture was taken seemed rather strange…
She scanned her eyes over the words. It identified the man as ‘Greik Turner’, a resident of Tatooine and a former moisture farmer. Pretty basic information – but who was he? She scrolled down, seeking an answer. It wasn’t long until she found one.
Greik Turner was a prisoner in one of Tatooine’s prisons. But why would Luke have this disc…? She automatically searched for his crime.
There came another knock on her door. “ Come in,” she murmured, rather preoccupied with her investigation. She could sense that it was Luke. When the door opened, she turned her eyes up to face him. “ Luke, who’s Greik Turner?”
Her brother, who had been walking forward to meet her, stopped dead, the color draining from his face.
