Crying. That's all he ever seemed to do nowadays was cry. I've told him to get over it and that it wasn't his fault, but he doesn't believe me. He thinks that if he hadn't gone down that alleyway, Demetrius James wouldn't be dead. "Oh, come on Greggo! If you hadn't gone down that alleyway, Stanely Tanner would be dead. You saved a man's life Greg!"
"Yeah Cal, I did, but I killed a college kid."
There was no point in arguing with him. All I needed to do was get him to work and Griss with the rest of the team would deal with the rest. The job will get his mind off of things. It did last time, it will again. "Come Greg, let's just get to work, okay?"
Greg finally gets up from the couch and walks to the door. I stop him just before he opens the door. "Look, I love you so much. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine."
The sadness in his face was too much to bear. He pulls me in close, places a kiss on my cheek, and says, "I love you too, Cali."
I didn't trust him to drive because of the state he was in, so I drove to the lab. Once we checked in, we headed on over to the break room where we found Nick and Warrick playing football on the Gamecube, Sarah leaning against the cabinets drinking a cup of coffee, and Catherine sitting on the chair reading her "Entertainment Weekly" magazine. Just as we sat down on the couch, Grissom walked into the room. "Hey guys, glad you could make it. Look, we got a lot to deal with here, so lets get to it. Nick and Greg, you two have a 419 over at Pacer way. Dead female vic found in her bed by an anonymous caller. Warrick, you and me have that 402 over at the Gas 'N Go on the Strip. Cath, Sarah and Cali, you two have a missing persons over at the park. Vic is a small girl around the age of seven. You have your assignments, so get to work."
I couldn't believe what I just heard. Grissom put Greg on a 419 with Nick. I needed to make sure he would be okay. "Griss!"
"Hey Cal, what do you need?"
"Look, I respect you authority, I always have, but you gotta put me with Greg. He's in a bad state and he needs me with him right now."
"Look Cal, I understand where you're coming from, but right now, I need you on that missing persons with Sarah and Catherine."
I know, Grissom's the boss, but I had to be there with Greg. But instead of arguing and possibly losing my job, I walk out the door and head towards Catherine and Sarah. "Cal!"
I turn around and I see Greg walking up to me. "I know you want to be there with me, but maybe Grissom knows what he's doing, he always does. If he says he needs you with Catherine and Sarah, then I'll be fine. I promise, I won't give too hard a time."
Greg plants a kiss on my forehead. "I'll see ya after shift."
As Greg walks off, I wave to him and watch as he runs around the corner. I spot Catherine and Sarah waiting for me and I walk up to them. "Well, are we just gonna stand here, or are we going to go find this little girl?"
We walk out to the car and pile in. I sit in the back while Catherine drives and Sarah rides in the front. Sitting in the back always calmed me down. We arrive at the scene where Brass is already there waiting for us. "Hey guys. The little girls name is Jessica Smith. Her mom said that she left her on the swing as she went to the car to grab her coat. When she comes back, Jessica's gone."
"Okay, I'll talk to the mom, Sarah, you go examine the swing and Cali, you go check out the surrounding area."
Catherine always was a mother to me. I never knew my mother or my father, they died when my brother was twelve and I was two. I always hated examining parks for evidence, there was so much litter that it was hard to tell what was evidence and what was junk. I remember last month when Nick and I had a missing person who was last seen in a park and we picked up what seemed to be one-hundred pieces of trash. But this park was pretty clean, especially when I found a key piece of evidence that scared me. "SARAH! CATH! Get over here!"
