It Just Wasn't Meant To Be
Chapter One
"What?"
Now Mikan was even more confused. Why would Natsume ask her that, and why did it matter in the first place, anyway? Wasn't Natsume the kind of guy who never cared about what went on around him?
"Well…I really don't know what to say. If I say yes, you'll say that I'm such a stupid dork. But if I say no…"
For some reason Mikan just couldn't go on. She was afraid of hurting Natsume's feelings.
"Well, Mikan?"
"I…"
"What would you think if…I said that…the rumors…"
Mikan couldn't look at Natsume anymore. She was blushing furiously, but she didn't know why. She just wanted the awkward situation to finish.
"That the rumors are what, Natsume?"
"That…they're true."
"Are you serious?!"
Mikan was in shock. The revelation gave her such a surprise that she actually took a step back away from Natsume.
"No…you're just toying with me again, aren't you? Well, you aren't fooling me this time, Natsume!"
She took another step back…and another…and another. Then she turned around and started running. She ran as fast as she could, but it wasn't fast enough. A strong hand had grabbed onto her arm and turned her around.
"Don't you believe me?"
Mikan didn't know whether he was telling the truth or not. His eyes refused to meet hers.
No way…is he…blushing?!
She turned her face away from him.
"This isn't funny anymore. Leave me alone!"
She was just about to pull her arm away from his grip, but suddenly he pulled her closer to him.
"I asked if you believed me."
His voice had a steely tone to it, the kind that tells you that you better do what they're saying or else.
"Natsume…what's wrong with you? This isn't like you at all!"
"Is that your answer, then?"
"Wha- "
Mikan was suddenly silenced by the look on Natsume's face.
"I- I didn't mean -"
"I see. Stupid little girl. Maybe it'd be better for you if you just forgot about everything that happened here today…that way you won't get hurt." He added in a mutter.
"Wait, Natsume! Tell me, what did you really mean?"
"You're so dense, polka dots."
Mikan was shocked at Natsume's abrupt change of manner. He was talking in riddles one moment, and now he was calling her stupid? His mood swings never ceased to amaze her.
"How can you even say that? How do you expect me to know what you mean? Do you expect me to read your mind, then?!"
She was practically shouting already. Natsume ignored her…and just walked away.
"Hey, I'm not finished with you! Get back here!"
"You just aren't worth it."
"W-what?"
"I told you to forget it, right?"
Natsume's back was facing Mikan, although he had stopped walking.
"Well then, if I'm so dense, then tell me already! Since I'm so dense, then you already know I'll never understand you until you really tell me what you mean."
Mikan had meant it to be sarcastic, but he took it seriously.
"Is that so? Well, if I tell you, would you believe me?"
"Just tell me so I can tell you whether I believe you or not!"
Mikan was getting frustrated. And mad.
"If you aren't going to tell me, then maybe I should just leave now, right? Like you said. After all, it's best for both of us, isn't it?"
She was still being sarcastic, but Natsume felt a sudden pang of pain in his heart. He was really hurt, even though she really didn't mean it. He knew that what she was saying was true…and that was what hurt.
She'll just end up getting hurt if she…if she…
"Yup, it is. So forget about it, okay? I don't ever want to talk about this again."
His tone was final. He turned around again…and this time he didn't turn back.
I'll be sorry for doing this. But I don't deserve her. She deserves someone decent.
Mikan stood there. It had all gone by so fast, and now she couldn't even remember what they were arguing about. She didn't even understand what they were talking about in the first place. And she was still thinking about their, well, conversation when she met up with Yuu again in the library. He was reading a book, and she pulled a chair and sank down into it beside him.
"What happened?"
Yuu was looking at her, concerned. She put her head down into her arms. She didn't feel like talking about it, but she knew that it would be easier to understand if she told Yuu. He would understand.
After all, I'm so dense.
She told him about everything that had happened while she was with Natsume.
"And then, he said I was so dense, and I would be better off forgetting about what he was talking about!" she ended. She looked at Yuu directly in the eye.
"Tell me the truth. Am I really that dense?" She looked down sadly at the table.
"Well, you can be a little, sometimes…" Yuu tried to say it in such a way so that he wouldn't hurt Mikan's feelings, but he had to tell her somehow. Her being dense was getting to be a problem.
"Why does it seem that everyone knows some things that I don't know about? You know, like they know some piece of gossip about you that even you didn't know about."
"Maybe…you should try to see what's beneath the surface sometimes, Mikan. Not everyone shows what they really are on the outside.
