Yesterday’s Memories
Prologue
“Who’s there?”
“It’s me,” a voice from the darkness growled.
“I’m sorry, sir. Come right in. I didn’t recognise you Mr. Yuki.”
Yuki entered the front of the block apartment, his arm around Shuichi. Yuki looked down at Shuichi, smiling and kissed the top of his head softly.
“Did you have a nice evening?”
“It was wonderful. Thank you.” Shuichi still couldn’t believe that it was quite real. Yuki had always been so cold, so uncaring, and there he was taking Shuichi out for dinner at an expensive restaurant and, the most perfect part of all, a moonlit walk along the beach. He couldn’t help feeling that something was wrong.
“I have…I have something I need to tell you.” Alarm bells began to ring in Shuichi’s head.
“What could he want to speak to me about? This can’t be anything good. And just to make it worse, I’ll have to tell him tonight. I’ve been putting it off for far too long. I have to do it tonight.”
“Are you alright? You don’t look too well.”
“I’m fine, he lied. Just a little tired, that’s all.” The feeling of dread began to deepen in his stomach, as he began to think. “Just how do I tell him that I have to be out of the country to promote Bad Luck?”
“He knows. He must know.” Yuki thought. “That’s why he looks so afraid. He knows what I’m going to ask. And he’ll going to say no.”
He patted the top pocket of his jacket, making sure that the ring was still there, that he hadn’t lost it on the way back to his apartment. He knew that he was just being foolish. He had already checked several times before, just to be sure. He was nervous. So nervous that he couldn’t bear the thought of anything ruining his plans.
“Maybe I shouldn’t do it.”
“No, I’m no coward. I’m not going to back down now. I’ve been planning this for so long.” He took a deep breath to build up his courage, before unlocking the door to his apartment.
“Shuichi, I need to tell you this,” he began in earnest.
“Hold on,” Shuichi interrupted. “I…I have something very important to tell you. It can’t wait.”
“But Shuichi, I…I love you, and I was wondering if…if…”
Yuki’s cell phone rang, Yuki sighed at the sudden interruption, knowing that the moment was ruined, he answered it. “Yuki-san, please come over to my office immediately. It’s Tohma, this is urgent.” He hung up and courage ebbing slowly away from him.
“I…I guess I’d better go.” He kissed Shuichi on the forehead and turned to leave, disheartened. “Seguchi called, he said it’s urgent.”
“Wait, Yuki.” Shuichi grabbed his trailing arm, pulling him back around to face his. “Did you mean that? Really?”
“That I love you?”
“Yes,” Shuichi whispered.
“I meant it with all my heart, you’re everything to me. I just wanted you to know.” Yuki looked down at the floor, too embarrassed to look Shuichi in the eye. He had been saving this revelation for the moment he proposed.
“Thank you.” Shuichi threw his arms around Yuki, kissing him deeply.
Shocked, Yuki turned to leave.
“Oh and Yuki?”
“Yes.”
“I love you too.”

“Yuki, this is an urgent request from the media. They want the full story on your relationship with Shindo-kun. Your fans have encamped outside of New York news station, where you will have your interview. We’re sending our finest body guards to back you up.”
Yuki sighed. “I’ve already confessed that I’m sleeping with a man!! What more do the want?”
Tohma smiled. “They want an official interview to confirm your love for Shindo-kun, this is free publicity for your latest novel. Isn’t it called, ‘Yesterday’s Memories’? Besides, I specifically requested your presence.”
Me? Why me?
“When do we leave?”
“Immediately.”
“Immediately?” Yuki’s heart sank. “I won’t be able to ask her until I come back.”
“Is that a problem?”
“No. No it’s not.” He left Tohma’s office, taking the ring box out of his pocket. “I’m taking this with me. There’s no way I’m letting Shuichi find this. It has to be a surprise.”

“Yuki. Please be careful.” Yuki could see the concern in Shuichi’s deep purple eyes. Shuichi seemed truly afraid that something might happen to him.
“I’ll be fine. I can take care of myself.” Yuki gently stroked Shuichi’s cheek. “Before you know it, I’ll be back here with you.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. I’ll be here.”
Shuichi smiled, remembering the previous promise they had made just after they got together. Yuki had stayed true to his word, and Shuichi had no reason to doubt him now.
“Can I tell you something before I go?” Shuichi asked, tentatively.
“Of course. What is it?”
“I…I’m…” Shuichi couldn’t do it. He couldn’t tell him. “I love you Yuki.”
“I love you too.” Yuki kissed him goodbye and boarded the train.
“I will tell him. It’ll just have to wait. I have plenty of time to tell him.”
