Chapter 1
Bella's POV
The ball bounced back to me and I caught it with my hands. I threw it back against the wall and it bounced back at me again. When I tossed it once more, I glanced over at my clock to check what time it was. As soon as I turned my head back around, the ball knocked me square in the face.
"OUCH!!" I cried out as I started to rub my nose.
"Bells?" Charlie called from downstairs. "You okay?"
"I'm fine, dad," I shouted, "just tripped. I'm okay!"
I heard Charlie laugh.. I think.
I set the ball down next to me and slumped down onto the floor, until I was laying down and staring at the ceiling. Edward was out hunting and I, as always when he leaves, was left with nothing to do. In the time that Edward was gone, I had baked two batches of cupcakes, done all of Charlie's laundry, cleaned the bathroom, and even washed Charlie's cruiser. It still didn't make the time pass by any faster so I resorted to throwing a ball at the wall. I must say, it was better than doing all those chores.. up until a couple of seconds ago when it smacked me in the face. Being defeated by my own tennis ball, I decided to just wait until Edward would come back.
How pathetic, I thought, I can't even manage a couple of hours without him.
But what can I say? I love him.
I smiled to myself as I pictured Edward in my head, his beautiful pale face, his gorgeous honey brown hair. His butterscotch eyes burned into mine and dazzled me. Geez, even when I'm just picturing him in my head he dazzles me! Edward, my love, the things you do to me even when you're not here...
"Bella!" Charlie's voice rang, shattering the image of Edward in my head. "Can you come down here please!"
I groaned and rolled over to my side. I stayed in that position for a while, contemplating whether or not to get up. After a minute, I decided to just get up and see what Charlie wanted. Maybe he needed help with something so I better go tend to him if he needed me.
I made my way downstairs carefully so that I wouldn't fall. With Edward not around, I had to be careful cause he wouldn't be there to catch me if I were to fall (which I always did). I walked over to the living room where Charlie was watching something on ESPN. He didn't seem to notice I was there, probably because he didn't hear a thud on my way down.
"Dad?" I said.
He looked up at me, his eyes wide with embarassment.
"Oh, Bells, didn't hear you come down," he smiled as he turned off the television. "Look, I've got to go to this police convention for a week and a half. Since I'm the chief, its mandatory that I go."
"Oh, okay," I simply said as I nodded my head. "When will you be leaving?"
"The day after tomorrow."
"And you're going to be gone for a week and a half?" Yes, I cheered mentally to myself. That means Edward can stay with me the whole time! Or I can go over to his house! Alice would probably want to hang out, too.
"Yeah, but you're not going to be here alone."
Charlie saw clear through me; I hated it. Though the "L.A." incident happened months ago, Charlie was still not on good terms with Edward. Sure, he eased up a little bit, but that didn't mean he liked him. He just was nice to him for my own sake. I felt the heat rising to my face but I tried to cool down so Charlie wouldn't notice.
"What do you mean I'm not going to be alone?" I retorted. "Dad, I'm eighteen-years-old, I don't need a babysitter. I'm perfectly fine fending for myself."
"I'm not getting a babysitter," Charlie sighed, "but you are going to have company over."
"Who?"
"Your cousins."
"My cousins?"
"Yeah, you remember your cousins, right? The ones that live in New York?"
"OHHH!!" I exclaimed.
My memory suddenly kicked in and I clearly remembered my five cousins. Whenever I would visit Charlie when I was little, my aunties and uncles would always make a trip down to Forks as well. We were all close and I always enjoyed their visits. But as time passed by and we all started to "grow up", I guess we just drifted apart. They stopped visiting Forks and I haven't heard from them since.. well, since now.
"Anyways," Charlie continued, "your Aunt Dianna called me a couple of days ago and said that they wanted to come by sometime to visit you. I told her they could come by while I'm away. That way you can see them and you won't be alone while I'm away."
"Really?" I said excitedly. "That's great, dad! When are they going to be here?"
"They're arriving the day after I leave."
"All five of them?"
"Yup."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
"You'll have fun with them, Bells. You haven't seen them for years and they miss you a lot. They're anxious to spend some time with you."
Charlied turned the television back on and I could clearly tell that our little pow-wow was done. I turned around and skipped happily upstairs, surprisingly not tripping. I was actually really excited to see my cousins! I hadn't seen them for so long and we were really close. Maybe now with them visiting me, we could be close again.
I walked in my room and nearly screamed out of fright.
