“Sara, could you come in here for a moment?” Grissom stood in the doorstand of his office. Sara just walked by, her nose stuck in several DNA results Greg just gave her.
“What? Now? I just got this from Greg and I need to get it to Catherine for our case and..” She looked up and her eyes caught sight of the other two men in Grissom’s office. Captain Jim Brass and dayshift supervisor Conrad Ecklie.
“Catherine can wait. This..” Grissom looked at the men in his office “can not”
Unwillingly, Sara walked in and as Grissom closed the door behind them she knew it had to be something serious. In her head she quickly went over the events of the past few days. Had she messed something up so badly she was now about to be shouted at by Ecklie? She could have... but why was Brass here?
Her eyes made contact with Brass’ and she briefly nodded at Ecklie. She couldn’t stand the guy and he damn well knew it!
“Sara, we asked you in here for a special reason” Ecklie stated and Sara rolled her eyes.
“I wondered when you were gonna say that” she answered sarcastic “anything’s special yo you than, huh?”
Grissom jumped in before Sara and Ecklie could get into one of their verbal fights. “I assume you heard of the 3 dead students at the UNLV?”
“Who hasn’t? Three dead students. No probable cause of death. One looked like a suicice, he was found hanging on the ceiling of his room. The other two looked natural, found on the university’s grounds. No reason to why they are dead. No suspects either” Sara named all the facts she new “why?”
Brass grinned to Grissom. “She sure is good”
“LVPD wants an undercover operation at UNLV. But.. they can’t miss any of their men. So they turned to CSI. Since the day shift is call caught up with that quadruple murder and I can’t miss any of my crew..”
“You guessed the nigthshift can” Sara finished Ecklie’s sentence and than turned to Grissom “right?”
He nodded but she could tell from his face he disagreed. “Conraded suggested you”
I know he did. That’s the only way to get me out of this lab.. and out of his way!
Sara didn’t speak out her thoughts, knowing the trouble it would get her. Instead, she just nodded. “I see. But I am on a case with Catherine. We have a rape in which deadly assault was used..” She waved with her DNA results. “I don’t think..”
“I can pair up with Catherine. Warrick and Nick both go solo with assistance from Sofia” Grissom interupted her and Sara raised an eyebrow.
“So, CSI can borrow LVPD when they don’t have a spare member to share..” Sara smirked and she more and more came to believe her thought about Ecklie a few seconds earlier.
“You’ll go undercover as a student or a teacher. Choice is yours, Sidle” Ecklie explained “your goal is to investigate weather all the deaths were natural or suicide. We suspect possible homicide but do now know for sure..”
“And you want me to get the evidence. Okay. I wanna be a student..”
Brass looked at Grissom. “Gil, don’t you think she’s too..”
“Don’t you say old, Brass or I’ll blow your head off!” Sara warned him and Brass never finished his sentence.
“I’ll let Grissom process the rape case. Catherine will be assigned to you as your connection to the lab” Ecklie continued “she’s all yours”
“I bet she’s gonna love that” Sara smiled when she imagined Catherine’s irritation when she heard she had to work for Sara “okay, we have a deal! What’s my cover?”
Ecklie gave her a file and Sara took it. She didn’t bother to read it now and turned to Grissom.
“Are we done? I need to get this to Catherine and fill her in” She didn’t wait for an answer but just turned on her heels and walked out of his office.
--
“What you got there, Sar?” Catherine asked when Sara handed her the DNA results, pointing at the file.
Quickly Sara explained what had happened in Grissom’s office and she was right. Catherine sure was irritated and she couldn’t deny, she liked to see her like this. Why did she always anjoy pissing Catherine off?
Probably because its the only way I can get her to look at me
She quickly banned that thought and focused on Catherine, who was now hissing in anger.
“Damn Ecklie. Why can’t he take this job himself?!” she raged
“With a face like his? He’s probably scared to be bullied” Sara’s joke brought a smile to Catherine’s face and Sara felt the warm glow inside her stomach, like she had felt it befor when being around Catherine. Ignoring it was impossible.
“So who are you?” Catherine asked and read over Sara’s shoulder as she opened the file to read her cover
“I can keep my own name. That makes it easier. Cool. And I can pick my major” Sara laughed “Ecklie sure makes better covers than anybody else I know”
“Science nerd” Catherine laughed and for a second her hand touched Sara’s arm. The electric shock alarmed her and she quickly pulled away. Sara blinked when Catherine called her a nerd. When anybody else would call her a nerd, she’d hate it. But when Catherine did, it was fine. As long as she called her something..
“I move into the dorm and try to figure out what happened” Sara closed the file “well, that’s easy. But I sure hope they’ll pay me overtime!”
--
“Thanks for driving me, Cath” Sara turned and smiled “and for helping me unload the car”
“We’re parents now” Catherine answered while opening the door to what woulc be Sara’s new home for who knew how long
“Don’t get used to it. I wanna solve this ASAP” Sara grinend “I’ve never been a great fan of dorms, you know”
“Let me guess.. styding all the time, skipping the parties, you had a Science major..” Catherine counted those three things together and smiled “you were a total loser”
“Harvard wasn’t always such a cool place. Yeah, I was an outsider but I liked it. I now.. I can be the party animal I never was” Sara answered seriously
Catherine raised an eyebrow. “Yeah..right.. So, what’s the deal? You’re gonna call me every night?”
“You’re gonna miss me, aren’t you?” Sara joked but hoped Catherine actually would. She fell on the matras lying on her bed.
“Keep on dreaming, Sidle” Catherine said and looked at Sara. Her hazelbrown eyes, her brown hair, her smile.. the cute space between her front teeth. She was adorable but yet so though and mysterious. And the mystery surrounding Sara Sidle was what intrigued her, together with her eyes..
She looked around Sara’s room. She had no room for a roommate. She had a two person bed, a desk, a trashcan, closer and a few shelves on the wall. Tv, radio, dvd player.. all accounted for.
“I see what CSI level 3 magic can do..” Catherinr grinned “what’d you tell Ecklie?”
Sara laughed to herself. When she had handed her “small” list of demands to the dayshift supervisor he had looked at her as if she asked him to marry her. She friendly though yet firmly explained to him she took this job withour a choice but if it had to be this way, it would be her way. Ecklie had accepted though she knew he hated it. And that was what she liked the most.
Hey pretty girl, I’ll leave you to it” Catherine interupted Sara’s thoughts “I gotta get back to the lab. Call me when you learn something”
She walked to the door and Sara quickly stood up to follow her. Before Catherine stepped outside, she turned and her eyes locked with Sara’s, Suddenly the chemistry between them was so high it coulc blow up the entire lab.
“Sar, be carefull” Catherine whispered and Sara rolled her eyes “and don’t you dare roll your eyes at me! There might be a serial killer on the loose her. The last thing we can use right now is a dead CSI”
“Ecklie can. He’d be happy to get rid of me. Probably the reason why he send me out here in the first place” Sara answered with a dark sense of humor “he hates me..”
“Sara! I’m serious!” Catherine muttered. She really wanted Sara to be carefull. The thought of her being out here all alone was scary enough. The thought of something happening to her was something she couldn’t bare.
Sara kept her face straight. “So am I. Goodnight, Catherine”
“Night, Sara. And call me!” Catherine said while walking out of the hallway
Sara nodded and waved. “Yeah yeah”
When Catherine was gone, Sara went back into her room. She quickly stepped up to the window and witnessed the black Tahoe drive off. She than closed the curtains. She was now all alone. She walked back to the door and locked it. She stood still and wondered what to do. First, she’d make the bed and than.. she’d go to sleep.
