Final chapter. Kept it rather simpel.
I myself am strongly against the death penatly. I do not believe any human being has the right to take the life of another human being. No matter what crime. Just let them suffer. Putting them to death makes us just bas as they are. But this MY oppinion.
This chapter is not meant as a discussion chapter. And MY oppinion is not expressed in this chapter. I stayed with a -possible- oppionion coming from the charachters but are in no way related to any real events or the perspetive the charachters/actors/creators of CSI have

Sara woke from the sound of her cellphone buzzing. Feeling lightheaded, she reached for the damn thing, supressing the desire to just smash it out the window and pretend the outside world did not exist. But she didn’t.

“Sidle”

“Hey, girl” a woman’s voice answered and it took Sara a few seconds to realise the woman on the other side of the line was Sofia. She rubbed the last bits of sleep out of her eyes and forced herself to sit up. Her bed still felt so good.

“Hey” she answered groggy “what’s up?”

“Did I wake you?” Sofia asked, as Sara just wished she would get to the point so she could go back to sleep. Judging from the fact Sara didn’t answer, Sofia concluded she had woken her up. “I’m sorry, Sar. I.. I just wanted to say we’ve got a full confession. From both of them. I just thought you wanted to know”

“Thanks” Sara answered dull and hung up. She fell back in the pillows on her bed and a deep sigh escaped from her mouth as she stared at the ceiling of her bedroom. Why didn’t she feel releaved? Why didn’t she feel somehow free now that she knew the two brothers had confessed their crimes?

“Who was that?” asked a voice from her left and Sara looked at the person laying next to her in bed. She smiled weakly and she stroke a hand through the messy, blond hair and looked into a set of blue eyes.

“Sofia” she smiled as she quickly stole a kiss, hoping it would make her feel better “she erm.. called to say they got a full confession. She just wanted me to know. And she was sorry she woke me..”

“Yeah me too” Caherine answered grumpy. She looked at Sara. She was still wearing her cloaths. She didn’t remember at which point laying on the bed and talking about what happened resulted in falling to sleep with Sara in her arms. But anyhow, it was nice to hold her so close to her side, being able to watch over her and protect her.

Sara snuggled herself back into Catherine’s arms and let her head rest on her chest. The steady yet soft heartbeat of the blond woman, calmed her. Her eyes were heavy and her body exhausted. Just before she fell asleep, she checked her watch and saw they were already two hours late for their next shift..

Sara closed her locker and just as she wanted to exit the lockerroom, she was held by a man standing in the doorway. She frooze as he put his hand on her shoulder but relaxed the second she looked into his eyes.

“Gris, you scared the shit out of me!” she spat out to her supervisor “you should know better than to sneak up on people like this. Especially.. after Thomas Lance”

Grissom calmly nodded. “You’re right. I should. I’m sorry, Sara” She nodded briefly to let him know she accepted his apology. As she put her hands in her pocket, she waited for the reason he had come here to sneak up on her.

“I think you might wanna hear the full confession and explanation given by the Lance brothers” Grissom said but Sara shook her head.

“Uh. No. I do not” she answered. It was not an excuse. It was true. She felt absolutely no desire to understand why they had comitted their crimes. Neither did she feel the urge to listen to their confessions. Hearing them tell how they had killed the three girls. How they managed to sneak into her room. Take the pictures.. Haunt her like a prey.

Grissom raised an eyebrow. Somehow he had expected Sara to nearly jump on the file and be all over the confession. Hearing she wasn’t, surprised him. But he nodded. “If that’s the way you want it. But just let me tell you.. They have been brought over to the Nevada State Prison, and will await their trial there. Prosecution wants the death penalty”

Sara who once, when she had just joined CSI, stated she could never take a human life seemed to be the type who never believed she would ever be responsable for another human being’s death. But this time, she looked up and met Grissom’s eyes. Her eyes were as dark as the night. Nearly black. And he saw her hate..

“I can live with that” she answered simply and than stepped around him, walking into the corridoor leading to the lab. Grissom looked at her walking away. She would never seize to amaze him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8 weeks later

“Cath? Got a minute?”

Sara stuck her head around the lab the blond was working in. Catherine looked up and smiled when she saw her lover in the doorstand. She put down her work, took off her gloves and stepped outside.

“Sure”

“Not here” Sara answered as she quickly looked around to make sure no one heard them. Catherine, not knowing what to think, followed her, realising Sara was going outside. She closed her eyes for a second and than also stepped outside.

“Sar, what are you doing? Why are you acting as if you don’t want anyone to hear or see us? They already know about us!” Catherine stated with a wide smile “its been eight weeks! Or did you bring me out here for some...”

It had been eight weeks since the day the two brothers had confessed and were taken to jail. All of a sudden, Catherine realised why Sara was acting this way. She bit her lip, seieng the determind look in Sara’s eyes. She knew what her decision was. She had made it probably the days the brothers were arrested.

“Trial stars today” Sara answered bittered, fighting her tears “actually, it starts in an hour.. I’m gonna be there, Cath. I have to be there”

“Ofcourse you do. You’re being called as a witness” Catherine answered as she closed the last few inches between her and Sara by stepping up to her, putting a hand on her arm “you have every right to be there. But what exactly are you talking about?”

“No, I mean I’m gonna be there when.. If... If jury speaks out. We all know they’ll get a death sentence. And I will be there. I swear to God, I’ll be there” Sara looked at Catherine “like you were there when Mathers was executed”

It had been her first execution. The first one she had witnessed. A killer. For just a little while it seemed that he was gonna walk but eventually, the evidence did what it was supposed to do. Catch the guilty one. And so Catherine had gone to his execution.

The memory of that still gave her mixed emotions. She wasn’t a firm pro or con. She didn’t really know her opinion on this subject. Back than, she had asked Warrick. He had told her he was pro, as long as someone’s guilty. And too many people were executed who later seemed to be innocent. It was that, that made her doubt the death penalty in many cases. But not when it came to Mathers. And not when it came to the Lance brothers.

“If that’s what you feel you should be doing, I will not be the one to tell you otherwise” Catherine answered “but as that moment comes, I want you to think it over one last time. Cause it will not be a birthday party, Sara. Someone will actually die there..”

Sara nodded. “I know, Cath. I know. But I have to do it. For myself. To put this all behind me, I have to see with my own eyes they really are dead. I never thought I’d do this but I have to. And not just for myself. But also for those three young women. I owe it to them..”

Sara turned around and walked back inside. Catherine followed her and caught up with her down the hall. She took her hand into her own and they shared a look that spoke more than thousand words.

And Sara knew that she could go further now. For this nightmare of darkness had ended.
